In Wyoming, Canada Jays are also called "camp robbers" and are known for being the friendliest birds out there. Because I live on a river the American Dipper is another favorite, as it was with naturalist John Muir. These little dark gray birds walk underwater on the bottom of the river bed when the water is low and hunt for food under the rocks. Amazing they don't get swept away by the current, but they don't and they're great fun to watch. Wikipedia has a video of them in action.

Martin, I consider you an expert of the forest.. I have been watching (KZbin) "Fifteen minutes in the Forest", Virginia land management. I have recently purchased 100+ acres in Southern Ma, Ct border. People are telling me in order to be a good caretaker I'll need to harvest it. I'm 69 yrs old. I'm afraid I'll be looking at a scared forest until the day I die. What do you say? Over the years I'v come to value the many decades of knowledge you've acquired. . Thanks, Pete
@TheNorthwoodsman1
@TheNorthwoodsman1 7 ай бұрын
In general with your age at 69 I would think that even if the eastern forest was fully mature the cutting can wait. In my area of MN most of the trees mature in less than 100 years. Loggers use the term "They are going the other way' meaning the wood is deteriorating rather than growing. Another option is some selective harvesting in the winter so less soil compaction and root damage occurs. The hard part for us is that when the good trees are taken there are some others that should be cut down so the forest can start over in that spot. Interesting that there is a good amount of sunlight that has to get to the forest floor for a healthy system from grasses , forbs and bushes.

I was curious about the jays (Perisoreus canadensis) so I looked up the history of the name. They were originally called Canada Jays (going back to 1760 - the French name Le geay brun de Canada), but briefly referred to as Grey Jays then back to Canada Jay back in 2018 by the American Ornithological Society. So yes Martin, you calling them Canada Jays is the most correct name. Out in Western Canada, the common name is Whisky Jack vs. the Gray or Grey Jay. Whisky Jack is anglicized from Wisakedjak, the First Nation's name for the bird.
@TheNorthwoodsman1
@TheNorthwoodsman1 7 ай бұрын
The way stories get changed, in MN they say its Whisky Jack because the loggers used to feed them spiked bread and they would get drunk and provide entertainment.
