No he doesn't, and that's part of Mark's point. He didn't invest because the issue is SCALE - i.e. it would be a profitable business for THEM (the owners) but not for the investors. Just because it's a (relatively) small business (and hence not investible), doesn't mean it's instantly doomed for failure. At the end of the day, there is competition among the sharks if they see something they want to be involved with. That's why Lori was pressuring him to decide right away without opening the door of opportunity for the others to get more info. After Raymond jumped in and matched, she agreed to partner with him jointly so long as he would close right away without further info being extracted.

Funniest part is with Scholly, I heard the idea and was like “I totally could’ve done that, if I were a shark, I’d make an offer right now, no questions asked.” Sure enough, Lori made the offer shortly after. That's literally why they are sharks. You see a business with potential. The offer was only 40k for 15%. You have 2 tech related competitors. If you wanna seal the deal without spending more money, you come up with different ways. The other sharks literally expected "fair play" and "ethics". Is that how they made their money? Highly doubt it😂
@bobg6715 Жыл бұрын
I agree, but clearly the founder should have done a better job in making a solid ask.... at 40K at 15%, his valuation was only 266K. With almost 100K app bought @ .99 that would have been a 1 Million $ company at 10x multiple. He undervalued his company, Damon and Lori knew it so they pounced, Mark and Robert were worried about the technicals so they missed out.
@torontomapleleafs52752 жыл бұрын
Lori and Damon liked the idea and wanted to close the deal ASAP due to the fear of Mark and Robert potentially investing more than what the entrepreneur initially had come in for. It wasn't a charity, it was an intimidation factor they used. Although they have no background in tech, it seemed like a pretty fascinating idea. I hated the Scholly one. Lori was being rude and Kevin was right, she basically shoved the deal down his throat. Not only was he prevented from giving any information, but she never gave him a chance to consider what was right for him. If her deal was truly the best, why did Lori have to force it on him so hard? Present the offer, then let him decide what is best for his business.

Kevin is right on the first one, he told them straight up why he didn't see it working. The other sharks danced around the subject, talking about scale and not a good fit but acting like it has lots of room for them to grow. Yes, every once in a while a product like this will break through, but realistically if they're in over 100 Walmart and they are not selling more than two a week, no one wants it. They have a major branding issue that would take way more capital to fix than they have. Maybe the shark tank online boost is enough, but I wouldn't put money on it either.
@Dr.JudeAEMasonMD Жыл бұрын
Maybe I missed it but how long had they been in Walmart? I was under the impression that they had recently secured that contract, and that total or even YTD sales didn’t necessarily reflect projected annual sales revenues. I could be wrong.

“I would rather work 80 hours a week to make $50k and work for myself, than have a $75-100k job working for somebody else.” Yes! Me too. But the struggle of self employment isn’t for everyone. For some people, a paycheck is worth far more than the dollar amount written on the check. Stability can be priceless. My first business made massive profit, but I was crushed by anxiety and eventually I fell apart. I’m talking a full nervous breakdown. I needed to take a job for 3 years as I healed. After finally confronting my issues and truly healing, the anxiety is gone, and I absolutely love self employment! I can’t imagine working for someone else. And I’m making a 5th of what I did in my first business. I say all this because I know there are people out there struggling with anxiety, thinking there’s something wrong with them because they can’t handle the pressure of working for themselves. It isn’t for everyone. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Peace of mind is worth far more to me than profit.
@Gandalf9142 жыл бұрын
I think Kevin, Mark, and Robert got so angry at the last one because it sets a bad precedent for future entrepreneurs on Shark Tank. Damond and Lori threw their money at Scholly (their money, their prerogative), but without forcing the entrepreneur to explain his execution. The other three got angry because then it does look like charity when you don’t hold him to the same standard as everyone else. The next entrepreneur could then come in with a horrible execution plan and get no offers and counter with “well you gave Scholly a deal!” And then the show looks bad. I’m glad Scholly is doing well, the message was just bad when you act charitable for him, but then don’t apply that standard to everybody else. Seemed like a really nice guy though so I’m glad it worked out for him.
@simone8172 Жыл бұрын
They'd actually already heard a little. Less than you'd want to hear generally, but 40k for 15 when it's already made nearly 100k in its first year alone is a pretty big green flag. Add that to a smart CEO, a wonderful marketing opportunity, a good cause, and a ripe market and you've got a lot of reasons to defend going in this early on Scholly as opposed to other products. I agree with what you're saying that the biggest problem is for the show and its precedent, but I don't think it's as problematic as it looks. The other problem is less about the show and more about the sheer lack of criticism and investigation for its own sake. The guy who came on got a 40k investment... and nothing else. That's not bad, but exposing potential weaknesses and possible fixes in the structure of the business could've meant a lot more for both parties.

The reason I feel that Mark and Mike got annoyed by Lori and Damien is because everyone knew the potential of Scholly. They knew that an algorithm like Scholly has a potential to be more than just being a scholarship app. If they allowed the man to answer what the backend engine was about I'm sure the offers would have been more than Lori and Damien could or would be willing to offer. A hardware like that can be sold to other company's to the tones of aerotech or military compounds. Mike and Mark definitely got robbed of an opportunity that could potentially have done more. And I agree with Kevin where he told them that they basically forced the man to say yes without even letting him hear the other offers. In Lori and Damien's eyes this was an opportunity to good to let go.
