Since God knows the terrible consequences of the Original Sin inherited from Adam and Eve are in all their descendants, He has provided the means to overcome and conquer sins in His Only Church (One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic) for those who believe and observe what He commanded (Matt 28:20, Mark 16:16). Why struggle on your own, outside of Our Lord's Only Fold (John 10:16)? I have been one of Christ's own for 58 years, saved at 22, now weeks away from 80. Read Romans chapter 7 re Paul's experience. Then get into Gospel of John, slowly...& most of all, PRAY. Ask your savior to give you assurance...keep listening to Spurgeon's sermons. Do not stop seeking God and His son, Jesus Christ.. In my pilgrimage I knew I was a child of God because of these attacks by the devil. I had a battle and in my new life I found peace of God, joy in the Lord when I prayed, tried hard to stay in His word, & please try to remember Jesus says He will NEVER leave or forsake you. (Hebrews 13:8.)

@christophercriss5888 thank God for that fear! I believe that is a proper fear to have! That’s the Holy Spirits way of moving you back. We shouldn’t dwell near the caves and the dangerous pitfalls of grave sinning and the Lord would move us to safer pastures but as long as we cry out to God, he helps us and rescues us! Take heart and become more perfect in prayer. This “sinless perfection” is possibly possible but the true believer would never ever admit this in any level because he will never see it from his vantage point because in his mind it’s Christ who strengthens, it’s Christ who washes, purifies, cleanses makes our walk perfect before him. Our faith is the vehicle that moves this action. But it’s Christ Jesus who accomplishes it! A true humble believer often laments, woe is me! Often cries in solitude for his misdeeds and his waywardness. But something beautiful happens to this person. To others looking on he possesses a beautiful spirit, but he himself cannot notice it nor see it. Because he is always aware of his weaknesses and his shortcomings. But in secret, and unnoticed by him, Christ is able to do a beautiful work in his heart. “In weakness, then am I strong!”

I asked God to help me with smoking. Then one day 17 years ago He said today is the day you must stop, so I did. I knew I shouldn't postpone it, because I knew the help was provided if I acted on his voice. I have puffed a little on a cigar celebrating finishing an education, aside from that, no smoking again! I have never heard him talk so clearly again, but once is enough to know he listens 🙂

Christ overcame that old man within me with love. Broken and contrite is my heart when convicted of sin, yes, but he joined himself to me and is hugging and embracing that old self within me, healing me, cleansing me, forgiving me and permitting me to lay down my burden of ‘fighting’ it on my own. We all know the futility of fighting sin by ourselves. The two becoming one, first dead and buried, then risen again is what conquers that sin within me.

This is such powerful and germane teaching. I am in a battle with cancer and I am not upset with that but I have worried that I missed the mark because I struggle with sin in thought, word, and deed. I had a pastor, very erudite, tell me that Paul was unsaved in Romans 7 but I have never believed that. The reality of the old Adam is a wedge that Satan uses to cause doubt.

Brother, I love you for saying that. It's a hard thing to comprehend that type of love and grace for me and I think it's always been. It's like working out my Salvation with fear and trembling for sure until I quiet my mind and thank God for everything that has occurred in my life to draw me to the church, to Jesus. I praise His name, because I would never have pursued these things without the Spirit of God. I'm trying to say that our fears that our sins "invalidate" our Salvation are common I think, because we should fear God but don't allow the crafty one to stop your worship and repentance and study of the Word, our faith and only hope. I saved this preaching it is a more formal time but Spurgeon was a great communicator. Wouldn't that have been powerful and affirming for his congregation to hear back then. I'm old and not a good writer. I wanted to tell you that He knows your heart and hears your prayers and I'd put my life on that.

Many Christians so called translate it " with my flesh" instead of " with the flesh". Paul disassociates himself from the sin that takes place in the flesh. Many believer also greatly err by saying that with their spirit they do not sin, but they do with their flesh. But this is refuted by such texts as I These 5:23 and Math 6:22. Thank you bro. @@stevenwistort9903 Yes, no doubt. Math. 6:22 and I These. 5:23 prove the fact. This although our bodies as Christians are not yet redeemed like our spirit is. We are raised, but not yet resurrected in our bodies. The body is dead because of sin and does not get resurrected until the translation of the church. That is why in I Cor. 15 it says "This corruptible must put on incorruption". But that in no way means we sin in our flesh like many Christian ( so called) teachers err.

Apostle Paul talks about the inner and outer man in Romans 7. Our battle is with our self! The inner man is Christ in you the hope of glory. The outer man is self! It’s a constant battle between the two, over time as we mature in faith the outer man dies off, as the inner man conforms to the likeness/image of Christ, Romans 8:29. God is good.

When pride arises within the heart, put it to death by the means that God supplies relying on the promises of God trusting in him confessing, your remains sin, to a greater desire for him. We are dead to sin in the sense of being beyond its power to inflict penalty on us. He that is dead is freed from sin in that sense. If a servant has come to a settlement with his master there remains no longer any bond between them. Now the wages of sin is death, and our wages have been paid in the death of Christ. The law has no claim upon a man who has suffered its extreme penalty, and this the old legal phraseology of Scotland brought out when it spoke of criminals being justified in the Grassmarket, when they were hung there. While I admire your zeal you would be well done to get a lectionary and look up the verb tenses, of course a course on elementary Greek would also be a blessing to you because you would learn about the historical present tense, which we do not have in English but Paul used that tense very carefully in the original text. God save us from twice dead theologians! Our Lord's brother wrote, "he who sins is of the devil" Paul wrote, "God is faithful he will not suffer us to be tempted beyond that which we are able to endure but will with the temptation also provide a way to escape." Because god is always faithful we have no excuse for sin.

@@saskiacalvert7547 What seems to usually be the case with Christians who believe one still sins now and then after conversion is that they, when young, begin to learn about sin and who commits it, but get married and care more for the things of their wife than for the things of God. Or they simply have believed the various councils of Christendom in the past who had barely come out of the dark ages and proclaimed that a Christian must needs sin on occasion. These same people often wrongly believe that a Christian is still under O.T. law. With sin being the strength of the law as I Cor. 15:56 says, they get into organized religion and opt for saying just the reverse of what John, Paul, Peter, David, Solomon and above all, Jesus, said on the subject.
