I don't. Back in 87 I would've been 1 year old, messing around with Taito's _Front Line_ or _Mouse Trap_ on the 2600, and those were the only two games we had. But this game is a classic and part of the gaming history I've come to know and love as a gamer for over 30 years. A rendition of "Peter Gunn" playing while you attempt to clear the streets of enemy spies on a high-speed thrill chase? What's not to enjoy there?

What was the game like this but instead of driving into a truck for your upgrades a helicopter would drop them onto you and you had to catch them?

My goal as a kid was to get to the boat section. If I did that I felt like it was a good run. Lots of Saturday’s spent playing this back in ‘87.

I had a version of this game on an old PC that has like 3 colors. I think it transitioned from the car to the boat sections on its own. As a kid, I never once thought to slow down, as I was used to playing racing games where you're supposed to go as fast as possible, so I didn't usually do too well.

I love how it wasn't like your typical NES music and like the same song just repeated for like 60-90 seconds, if that... sure that bass line was constant, but it seems they kept changing or adding SOMETHING to that awesome song as long as u didn't die and had that playing, no??? Man, the arcade version of this was so much better, so much cooler, and took up A LOT of our money as kids when it came out... we all loved that friggin music and endless machine gun most of all lol

I was blown away by this game after owning a Game Genie and it is just an endless loop after hours of being persistent... Nice gaming tho!

I remember having this for my Apple II. We only had the Peter Gunn theme in the opening, and it was music-less the way through the main game. However, we only had two buttons, one for oil/smokescreen, and one for machine gun/missiles. We couldn’t toggle if we got both oil and smoke, but it worked out on water (always smokescreen). We also didn’t have the limitation where we could run out of a backup weapon (though that didn’t stop us losing it if we crashed the car/speedboat).

Spy Hunter is a classic no matter what system it was on. I had it for my Atari 800. I could get pretty far once I learned how to shoot down the helicopter. My problem was my score would always stop because I’d accidentally take out a motorcycle after shooting a switchblade or the limo.

Best Arcade-to-home conversion. I usually let the chopper pass most of the time instead of firing a missile at it. I HATE the water stage though.

The best one is either this one or the Colecovision port, though Coleco doesn’t kill you if you hit an exploding vehicle after destroying it.

"It's funny to think back now on how many hours I put into Spy Hunter as a kid considering how little there is to it" I know the feeling... I think as a kid I just convinced myself that it just HAD to have a ending, that a game this cool doesn't just loop forever, and if I drove just a little bit further, played a little bit better, I'd finally see it. I never did see that mythical ending, but man could I loop the hell out of Spy Hunter.

This was a very fun game, despite the limitations of the NES controller. I think I always had trouble switching weapons for some reason. For some reason, what I remember most is that to pause the game, you had to have a second controller plugged in, and you had to press "A" on it. Did any other NES games require a second controller to pause?
