All things considered, I do praise this movie for giving us a rather good villain. The idea that this guy simply wanted to get back the time he lost he could be spending with his father is kinda touching. Plus I laughed way too hard when the goons took out the kid's hearing aid and they argued in sight language, complete with a "stop yelling at me!" sign and the villain saying "why did you take his hearing aid? What are we, monster?"

i really like that they had a disabled protagonist who was more than his disability. like take away the fact hes deaf, and hes still a character. or, well, as much of a character as any spy kids character. he isnt defined by his disability, but he still deals with the struggles and limitations of his disability
@thirdcoinedge4 ай бұрын
When he finally comes to terms with his dad's death at the end is honestly kind of nice. Every Spy Kids movie had that little feature of profundity with their villains: Spy Kids 1 had that conversation with Floop about wanting to make art that could genuinely connect with and be enjoyed by kids, Spy Kids 2 had Romero's mad scientist tragic backstory and that "does God live in Heaven because he's afraid of what He created?" quote, Spy Kids 3 had Grandpa talking down the Toymaker by telling him how he grew past his initial desire for vengeance as life went on and actually forgiving him, and Spy Kids 4 has a villain who inadvertently nearly destroys time just because he wanted to be with his dad.

@12:07 I can not only confirm that I saw Spy Kids 4 in theaters, but I saw it when it was Spy Kids 4D - the 4D being that it came with a scratch-n-smell card. You would scratch a number on the card that would correspond with a number on the big screen and you would smell what was on the screen. This scene was one of them and you could "smell" everything that he was getting into by using the card. It worked exactly how you might imagine.

I'm surprised Alex doesn't like the second. Like, after that it was all downhill but I thought The Island of Lost Dreams was a solid followup to the first with tons of creativity that didn't come at the expense of a cohesive plot (also, compared to all the other big names in minor roles that just phone it in, Steve Buscemi legitimately played his role like he was trying to win an oscar)

I had two friends in high school who LOVED the prank of stealing people’s phones and putting their number in the contacts under a weird/unexpected name. They would do this to acquaintances they just happened to be near, so sometimes the punchline of the joke would come years later. One of them got ahold of the other’s phone and didn’t have a reason to call them for four years. He got a phone call in the middle of a business meeting in 2009. He looked down and saw that Jessica Alba was calling him. He looked at everyone and told them what his phone said before saying, “there is a strong chance that this is fake. But I cannot take the risk that it isn’t.”
@thecornerkid4029 ай бұрын
The person who got the phone call also got an epic payoff. In 2010, he had a reason to call a girl whose contacts he’d edited 4 years before. “Hello?” “Hi, Jane. It’s Bob.” “Bob?” “Yeah. I just hadn’t heard from you and was making sure you could make it today.” “Bob?” “Yeah Bob. Can you make it today?” “Bob? Why are you labeled, Foxy Mama in my phone?” Bob had no memory of doing that.

Fun fact about the actor for Juni. He actually voiced the main character from one of my most favorite show Generator Rex, Rex Salazar. Created by the same studio that made Ben10, Man of Action and based on the comic series M.Rex ......in my opinion, its much better written than any season after Alien Force. I honestly think its because the Cartoon Network boardroom were foaming at the mouth about everything and anything Ben10 and left the Studio and the original writers tf alone to make Generator Rex. Hope his VA knows that people are out there that fucking loved what he and the studio brought to Rex and his story. Dont worry, we remember. You did good guy.

@PhilipJackson039 ай бұрын
I’m sure someone mentioned it but a major part of this films marketing was the “4-D” experience. So in addition to being a 3D movie, when you went to see the film you got a sheet of scratch and sniff paper which was numbered and those numbers corresponded with what was going on in the scene. So for example, at 12:00 the scene in theatres had numbers pop up on the screen that went with the snacks he was eating. I vividly remember that because I was so pumped for the movie for that reason, but then a lot of the smells were so dull that you couldn’t get anything and it just took me out of the movie. Left very unsatisfied.

I remember when this came out. It was supposed to be a "4D" movie. They gave us a little card with numbers on it and when specific things happened in the movie, we scratched the numbers on the card to "smell" the candies or the vomit smell at the appropriate times. To make it more immersive I guess lol. There were like 10 different smells. Crazy times, dudes.

As someone who grew up with only spy kids 4 it’s very hard to listen to others trash it. The scene where the villain cries when he tells the kids he just wants more time with his father and his voice breaks, will forever have an everlasting effect on me. It taught me to always cherish my loved ones because, before you know it, they could leave you. It’s goofy but lovable at the same time. I’d probably put it on the same scale as SK3.

Despite how bad it is, I do actually love this movie; mostly because of Danger/Timekeeper. His whole story - if isolated from the Spy Kids franchise or told from his POV - is a tragic tale about taking the people around you for granted and the cost of those mistakes. He cannot tell anyone about his plan, because as a spy, he is meant to do away with world-altering happenings, not cause them. In a way, he 'wins' at the end, getting to interact with his father again, but 'loses' in freeing himself or letting his father live longer. The kids, meanwhile, are dealing with the death of their mother, and are in a position where they can sympathize with his cause. Though not as explicit, I definitely see Rebecca doing the same as Danger if she was older and didn’t learn to accept her mother's passing. The movie subtly follows their path to accepting their step-mum as a part of their family, avoiding the fate Danger fell into where he had no one to comfort him. Nothing in the timeline changes from Danger's time jumping either, which I think is the cruelest part. He literally *cannot* erase his father's mistake; he can only accept what time they do have and live peacefully, just like he had tried to do for the world. So in a way, the movie is probably one of my favorites, if only for this factor alone. Idk why, but Spy Kids can be really deep when you look past the surface level kid jokes, just like a lot of kids media recently (Bluey, Amphibia, Luca etc). So, I'm happy this movie exists, and despite my own issues, the movie did instill in me a will to never take finite occurences for granted.

I didn't like how Carmen was talking about Juni, as if he was a traitor for not remaining with the OSS when the 2nd and 3rd movie showed he didn't really want to be a spy. Even in the 1st movie he was just going along with what his big sister said to do and trying to save his parents.

I think my favorite part of Spy Kids is the fact that it's pretty heavily implied to take place in the same universe as another set of movies from the same director, the Machete movies, which as far as I understand are hyper gritty and violent, but the uncle character from the original trilogy is played by the same actor that's the main character of those movies and makes direct but heavily watered down references to events from the other series and is implied to be literally the same character.
@kingkorblox76839 ай бұрын
A fun to metion with this movie is that when it was released in theatres (or it might have been the dvd release I'm not 100% sure, maybe both) it was when they were trying to do "smell-a-vision" where they would give you cards with scents on them and at certain points in the movie a number would show up and you scratch that number on the card and then smell the scent meant to be smelled. I.e when the dog-bot helps them escape the first time one of its defense mechanisms is a "fart cloud" (as childish as the rest of the movie) and you would scratch that number and smell... for some reason.

20:33. They would still have to deal with Tick Tock. Despite Danger eventually learning to appreciate the time he has and not dwell on the past, Tick Tock refused to accept that outcome. So he was planning on redoing it over and over and over again until he can get the results he wants, regardless of how many people and timelines he has to ruin in the process.

12:15 doesn't age well; there is a reason for it, however. I saw the movie in theaters, and it was advertised as "4D" to go along with being Spy Kids 4. You had 3D glasses and were given a card with 12 numbers on it. At different points in the movie a number would appear on the screen (this scene was like 6, 7, 8, I think?), and you were supposed to scratch and sniff that number(s) for the corresponding smell on screen. The only reason I remember this? At one point, you had to scratch a number when the baby farted; it smelled like chocolate.

I remember watching this film in the cinema and everyone was given a scented scratch card. At different points in the movie a number would pop up, prompting you to scratch that number on the card and take a whif of what was on the screen. It was because it was advertised as 4d i think. So weird. Also this film was good, i really enjoyed it cant lie.
