It's success in the west is irrelevant especially when you consider that the last 10 episode have been the most watched thing on television in Japan.

One good piece covering this error was "The author of SPY x FAMILY does not hate his characters" by neojamx. I can't link it here but you can Google the title and find it. TL;DR The original line he spoke was a joke within the interview, and he only feels unattached to Loid's *design*, not the Forgers.

Spy x Family has an overarching story that's really interesting, but the pacing of it is slow by virtue of its genre: an episodic slice of lifey comedy. And honestly, it excels at this premise, the manga is an amazing fun lighthearted read every two weeks when it comes out, so are the anime episodes. I genuinely hate to use this argument, but in my opinion you're just watching the show wrong LOL If you're looking for another pure action shonen like Naruto or Attack on Titan where the protag has a very clear goal and every development of the story works towards that then Spy x Family is just not gonna fulfill that role, and that doesn't make the show bad. It just means that it isn't what you wish it was (which is unfortunate but alas, not everything is always gonna be to our taste).

You say the anime needs to take a break because of the filler… but this wasn’t filler. It was all in the manga. After the introductory arc, Spy x Family does become very episodic. Every now and again you’ll get an arc but between those times, most of the adventures are one offs. It’s a slice of life show with spy elements, not the other way around. You simply got the wrong idea on what the series ultimately is. It has nothing to do with the anime using filler because there’s not enough material. This is the material. Spy x Family is very episodic.

Lol I feel like I had a different expectations than other people had in this anime. I really thought that this show is going to be about 5 year old child life with her family and her friends. I didn't expect this to be a heavy plot driven or anything (cause I didn't read the premise I just saw the poster) But when I watched it for the first time, it feels like a heavy plot spy like any other shounen anime. Without offense of any kind, I think that you simply need to know more about gag manga when considering Spy x Family success. Some of the most well known, long running or influential manga from various decades have been like this. Dr Slump was the first big Toriyama success, without which Dragonball wouldn't exist and a large part of the modern shounen market would be different. Sgt. Frog may not be particularly remembered now, but was kinda everywhere in the 90s. Gintama is literally one of the most critically acclaimed anime/manga and it's as silly and episodic as they come most of the time. Urusei Yatsurs basically created the "waifu culture" that we live in today and... Yeah. It was a gag manga. Ranma 1/2 is also another big name. Hell, even Doraemon, one of the single most watched anime by japanese Kids, is essentially a gag series (plus some moral lessons. Whatever). Essentially, I believe you are understimating the importance that such a genre had throught the history of japanese pop-fiction. Does this mean SxF is going to be the next big influential manga for a decade like Dragonball? I highly doubt it. But it's undeniable that the realm of manga has always had a spot for such series, focused on the here and now rather than a long running narrative or character development. Not everything needs to be High Art to have value. This kind of series is meant to be enjoyed as a relaxing, wholesome and funny experience. Nothing more, nothing less, and it's not like writing comedy is easy to begin with

Look at the most popular anime, women are almost useless, crying and even if they are said to have a story and power still used as fan service and eye candy. Although I find that Yor isn't too bad. In the next installment she will have some action based arc of her own.

No hate but I was a sxf manga reader before it had an anime and I loved it because I used to treat it like a sunday morning cartoon. The manga rarely takes itself seriously unless they are talking about super heavy stuff like war. It's only meant to have a very loose plot where anything goes at least that's what I used to expect from it before it became unimaginably popular with the anime crowd. I just think the anime audience such as yourself have a very different idea of the kind of show Spy x family is because of the hype it got in the first part. I feel like many of the issues with the anime is remedied in the manga. In the manga things happen a lot faster. I single chapter of deviation feels like nothing, while spending an entire episode feels like an eternity. This of course doesn't excuse the weak progression of the story and under utilisation of Yor and other characters, however in the story's original format things just tend to feel like less of a hassle or slog. Filler in the manga just feels like getting to spend more time with the obscure cast members in my opinion.

Idk I think the episodic nature of the show fits the slice of genre well. Things kick into gear later on in the manga and as a feel it hence feels like a more cohesive well balanced story. I also want to point out this is first and foremost a gag manga and I don’t expect it to be so plot heavy or to have a linear structure. I usually agree with your takes on anime, but this I can't agree with. I love it, even the fillers you were talking about. Some of the scenarios, although not plot heavy, are refreshing and fun to watch as a feel good anime should be. It showed all aspects of everyone's lives, even the life of Becky, not just the Forgers. I, for sure, do not want the anime to just revolve around the Forger family, that would be kind of boring. It is an anime which you'll look forward to after a hard day at work or school.

Prepare for a long ass essay from me… Spy x Family got me so hooked from the first two episodes that I binged the whole manga… So I basically knew what was gonna happen. Those 5 episodes you mentioned, I found hilarious in the manga! And there were still times when I laughed at those bits in the actual anime. Like Damian’s dance was sooo funny to see in the anime. Personally, I feel the anime lacked sometimes in executing the comedy, but not all the time. And the reason that penguin episode was put at the end credits was because it was a short mission story. Actually, those 5 episodes endings were either short mission stories, or anime originals. Those 5 episodes was where I felt like the anime team did really bad at flowing the story and executing the comedy. Because some of those short missions were super funny to me in the manga, but it did not hit the same in the anime. Like the Sylvia short mission kinda felt like huh? Okay then… when I actually found it funny in the manga. It just kinda felt like a bad choice to string multiple short missions at the end of episodes 😅 Anyways, I have a sibling who is younger than me, and hasnt read the manga, and we watched the whole anime together and even he found those 5 episodes boring. I agree that part 1 definitely had a direction for each episode and part 2 definitely leans more into the slice of life aspect of the story. But once we got to the Nightfall arc, it really did pick up and my sibling started to enjoy the show a lot more. I also feel they adapted that arc extremely well! That’s kind of how it is with Spy Family, a lot of comedic slice of life episodes before eventually building into an action arc. Part 1, however, felt like each episode had a meaning to the plot and was building up to something, managing to be engaging and comedic at the same time, but ig you could say the pattern has changed to what it is now. But you’re in for an action filled treat when season 2 comes around! 🙏🏻 Also, that Endo comment you mentioned about his characters. I’m not sure if it’s true because I’ve heard varying takes, some saying that it was incorrectly translated and that’s not what he actually meant/said. Or that when he said that, it was in a different context.

As someone who has enjoyed anime for 23 years now I can easily tell if an anime is good or lame even based on their poster. Spy Family, Demon Slayer(I hate it because its too popular for my liking), Bleach, One Piece(Hate any anime that crosses 90 episodes), I watched naruto as I was a noob ten years ago. Trust me people the true work of art anime is hidden behind these loud noises of marketed anime. If you truly love anime you will make the effort to find these hidden treasures. Any good anime is the one where the author reflects his mind, beliefs in the series.

I enjoyed Spy x Family at the beginning, good characters, very interesting plot, good character dynamics! But I just felt like it slowed down for me and I’ve gotten to the point where I’m just like, what’s with all the hype 🤷🏻‍♀️ Personally I feel like it’s overrated. I don’t really know if this is a valid argument but, I personally enjoy more serious animes with serious topics, lots of angst, romance, some comedy is fine but it’s not for me. With spy x family it’s pretty clear it’s mostly comedy but even still I just can’t enjoy it when during any serious moment Anya is just so unserious, and I know she’s a child but I feel like a kid irl wouldn’t even act like this, and I know it’s fictional but I just can’t get into it like I used to. There’s also another show, Buddy Daddies! It’s very similar to this but I somehow enjoyed it more because, it was still a comedy but it had good serious moments that weren’t interrupted. I also Like Miri more than Anya 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is sad, indie film is getting overshadowed by other bigger film studios. Indie film including anime needs more respect and attention to it. I feel bad you feel this way but I understand where you're coming from. You do have to understand however that this is a shonen manga. It's a series and a slice-of-life manga. You call the quality bad when you get "filler" episodes, but the original meaning of "filler" is getting character development even if the plot isn't moving forward. The main plot of sxf is for Twilight to get close to Desmond for world peace. The episodes you call "filler" show the character development and slow journey the characters took to get there, so I don't think it's 100% fair to discredit these stories. (like someone else commented, i think you're looking at the show the wrong way) What you're getting in spy x family is really *mainly character development* and the plot-slash-mission progression in doses. The journey is more important. Tbh, I can agree cour 1 is better than cour 2 because cour 1 works to establish many different new elements in the story, which is why its so interesting. Cour 2 already has these elements already established and we just see the slow crawl in Twilight's mission as well as some character development. I'm kinda surprised you didn't like Yor's jealousy arc cause that dealt with some of her insecurities & tells more about her as a person. Anyways, my point is that it's gonna be slow-paced from here on out because the manga has so many volumes. When you say "let it breathe" I kinda get where you're coming from. Some stories felt really fast, others too slow and others just right. I feel like this is a problem with the 2 animation studios that worked on this tho, cause they usually would try to fit 2 chapters in one episode (rightly so, cause 1 chapter is just 10 mins long). But I really hope you don't give up on it yet, or if you're really curious about the plot, it's gotten quite plot-driven in the later volumes so it's good to read the manga.

The way media of all genres tend to be written in the current era aims for constant audience hype (Cliffhangers every episode, twists and turns everywhere, true crime, etc.), which has kind of skewed how content is digested. Spy x Family is honestly a really brilliant counter to all of that because it paces itself with slice-of-life ambiance while giving us longer emotional, action-oriented arcs in-between. This is more akin to how many classic (Especially very long) anime series were executed, and I can see how it may not suit younger viewers like yourself's tastes. From the perspective of a manga reader, the recent episodes are not fillers as much as set up for future storylines in the long-term. There are many details and characters that will be revisited later, and all the main characters undergo minor developments both as individuals and within their relationships. It's a bit hard to perceive when standalone, but it's much more understandable if you treat this series as something that will have at least a five-year lifespan instead of two.

The manga keeps focusing on random side characters and recycling character interactions (especially with Anya and Damian using the same stupid joke) instead of being about the Forgers, which is why I watch the show/ read the manga. ngl when I read the manga a first (7-9 months ago) I felt it, the excitement while reading very chapter, no chapter bored me but when spyxfamily part 2 came out (I saved it for binging later) no one was talking about it and at that moment I thought "maybe it's because chainsaw man is here" cuz' SxF was still on top of charts... just a week later I was suddenly bored cuz' I had already finished watching weekly eps so I started SxF.... 2 eps in I had the same excitement I had while reading the manga but I things things started to go downhill from there, the arcs were good, the animation, voice acting and everything was good but I didn't feel like commenting or anything... It was like there was nothing different to talk about.. also the gap you talked about, it's true comedy/SoL anime are just like that they get forgotten easily like c'mon my dress-up darling was good and I still love it but who talks about t anymore. that's just how SoL and comedy type anime works. 5:07 most of these eps you mentioned were full of unneeded unrelated fillers that wouldn't have had any impact on the original story that's why it felt unimportant rather in S1 there were barely any filler parts and they sticked to the story. 5:38 point to be noted that's it I noticed it too even now in manga they haven't once used his power (for a proper reason) after that one incident which was very disappointing for me as I had high hopes with what not they could have made out of it but I moved on cuz' the manga is not making me bored (the arc keep getting better). maybe the mangaka has something in store but I tell you the tennis arc is something I can never stop talking about +new season is confirmed and I am sure it will create a good hype.. Almost all of the plots in those episodes are directly from the manga. This is a sitcom first and foremost, so telling funny stories is way more important than the plot. It sounds more like a pasing problem than a filler one.

Part 1 and the first few eps of part 2 were great, but most of part 2 up until nightfall's arrival feels aimless. I was hoping we'd get more screen time seeing Yor struggling with her assassin role vs her role in Loid's mission.

When i began reading it before the anime even came out i compared it to saiki k in my mind. I feel the "filler-ness" of the series is due to its comedic genre. It's difficult to build a coherent story and timeline when the show is mostly built on shallow plot-points just for laughs, and only explores deeper character development once in a blue moon. I wouldn't mind seeing SpyxFamily have a slight shift in genre. I know its known for its comedy and wholesomeness, but it can greatly benefit from being an action-oriented drama. The plot is there, the characters fit, the environment fits. That's not to say the show should rid itself from its comedic and wholesome aspects, but it can take a sideline. Let the characters have more serious moments, so we can really appreciate the funny ones.

Major manga Spoilers Im a big fan of spy x family and I’ve was watching weekly with my cousins however the show and the manga show so much sign of slowing and devolving character growth and the problems with the show is starting to make me want to quit. I was wondering why the manga was feeling slower than ever when I realized there is literally an entire arc of filler. Yor doing her assassin gig on a cruise ship sounds like a fun premise but then you realize nothing happens. Anya is not awarded a Stella so her objective does not progress, loid does not get closer to Anya because he is too busy disarming bombs or something, anya does not learn any lesson, bond is left at home so that franky can use him on a date that goes nowhere, yor does not become a better fighter because she is already way too strong and even if she got experience it literally does not matter because this arc will not be brought up again. I get that this is a slice of life anime and I read a lot of Shonen but how can I help from feeling like I wasted my time as I just read so many chapters for it to ultimately not progress the story one bit at all. The story actually devolves later on when Anya gives up on collecting all the stars. That’s like thanos deciding that after collecting 2 infinity stones that it’s just too hard and he’ll just manually wipe out half the population. What was the point of Anya saving a boy from drowning or struggling to win dodgeball or every time Anya promises to be smarter and take lessons from yuri. Literally character development down the drain because she just didn’t want to. This latest arc seems to have promise but I have just so little incentive to keep reading because the Anya face gimmick and read mind thing can go on for only so much longer before it is simply forgotten. I hope we see more progression instead of regression in the future

If I may suggest, just hold off from tuning in and wait for the manga to end. Once the final consensus comes in, you can decide whether or not to invest. That's what I am doing. In this way, if it ends poorly, I would be a little bummed out but I'd be spared from sheer disappointment. If it does end strongly, I'd be willing to invest. Who knows? Maybe once the full picture is out, it could potentially justify those meandering moments (this has happened to me before with certain stories. For example, when I read Kamisama Kiss, there were stories and moments that I initially did not understand their place. After reading the full manga, the earlier confusing moments clicked). On the other hand, the full story may not justify those moments and is simply a mess. At the very least, you could take a break and wait it out. As Kratos said, keep your expectations low and you'll never be disappointed.

In my case, I did enjoy season 1 and the filler episodes but I wished for more focus on the development of the family dynamic (I know it is slow cause it is in progress in the manga), while the episodes dedicated to turning Anya into a star student or befriending the target's kid feels boring to me. I don't know, but the Damian episodes are boring while I enjoy Becky and Anya's friendship.

This tbh feels like a rant / personal opinion masquerading as a video essay, consisting of ambiguous critiques such as "something feels off" or "let it breathe" or "cute Anya Bond scene should not have been part of end credit." The last one was a legitimate complaint for editing. But I fail to see why it was included in this essay as part of "SxF is so disappointing" because this essay is about SxF story being disappointing and scene placement doesn't really affect the story.

My biggest problem with the show is how the anime is treating the characters. Loid is just doing Loud things and doing his job. Anya is supposed to be collecting how many stars like Pokémon badges so my question is…..why is the anime taking so long for her to do it? At this rate, she’ll have one star per season and it will just take too long. Not to mention the fact that it took the entirety of season two for her to get close to Damien that she meets his father. Yor in my opinion, headed to work. She was supposed to be in assassin so my question is…. Why isn’t she doing it!? we haven’t seen her at work literally since her introduction. Isn’t the whole idea of spy family supposed to be these two conflicting forces with Yor killing and Loid spying on them while keeping up with the whole family gimmick? It feels like that idea was entirely dropped somewhere and forgotten.

reply from 00:00-2:00 of the video: all you're saying about spy × family the suspense is real. when chainsaw man came in it's like something declined. spy family was actually good. i watched first season, 18-20 episodes. but i think maybe there's certain parts that could be better. and hold on before i get bash. there's nothing wrong with adding repetitive ideas from spy films & scenarios & bringing them to life on telivision. as long as there's more differences even though it did look like a typical spy x family show (i watched a lot of them that's why 😅). i understood the first episode was typical because it was mostly about a previous agent that becomes an agent again forming a pretend family for his missions as a decoy of making it seem that his life is normal & his missions are a secret. i think that's what they wanted to do in the beginning, the creators. then anya came in, the pretend mom, and they formed but all of them did have secrets. anya telekinesis, mom an assassin, and agent twilight private missions. that's typical but some parts weren't. like in other spy shows & movies you won't find the child having telekinesis, being that young on some more challenging missions (i don't remember how much), and some extra stuff was more different making the show more enjoyable. also i've never watched chainsaw man but i was seeing online it before this video it was getting more commended.

I get what you're saying tho i did binge read the manga after the first part and going into part 2 now i really enjoyed myself i knew what was going to happen and i just sat there and watched the show in a world where everything either ends on a cliffhanger or shows end and their next season come out in 2 3 years so when you have to watch it you need watch recaps and sh*t I really appreciate that i can just watch an episode of spy x family Where they just do random things and it's wholesome ( also we haven't reach that part of the manga yet but we'll get backstories and development and it's 👌) I think it depends on what you expect from a show if you go in wanting deep plot yeah you're going to be disappointed

Binging this is def different from watching it weekly. Being a fan of Gintama, I understand what these slice of life eps are trying to do here. You need to give it time. I am a manga reader, and the second season will be superior than the first for sure, there is a lot more story.

I appreciate the desire for pushing forward with character relationships. However, the fleshing out of character traits in the side stories is adding spice to them. When the show gets back on rails I will savor the additional flavor.

spy x family is a sitcom. There's nothing wrong with liking it as i like plenty of sitcoms, however If I wanted to watch a sitcom I would put something like golden girls on. I just don't watch anime for that reason so I ended up dropping it during the 2nd cour

You talked about filler episodes at a time where having them wasn't that bad. Keep in mind these are less than 10 filler episodes. Just a few filler episodes and you go full 180 degrees?! If you can wait for another season(as you claim) then why complain about all this? Then again, maybe you read the manga so you have knowledge of something I don't. But the title is a bit exaggerating. The show is by no means disappointing.

think you guys have gotten almost too invested in the story and plot elements... It is a slice of life show , the manga had the same scenarios played out... It's not that much of a story driven show like for example think of Amphibia season 1 to 2 , it was very slice of life with some story beats . Honestly it's still very early to tell how this is going to play out . I honestly loved Yors episode where she was taking cooking classes because that's what I watch Spy Family for . For the character moments , even the side characters get full episodes , I love those episodes . I usually love your takes but this didn't do it for me :\

SPY X FAMILY is a great slice of life anime but honestly speaking sometimes the manga writer just shifts the focus like the way he's doing in all the recent capters from chapter 97 to 101 its not at all talking about anya or the forgers or even damian. sure chapter 96 blew our minds but then these chapters just bored me. If this arc of Martha and Henry comes in the anime in like the 4th season or after I'd like them if they put it in one episode. I really want more Anya and Damian arcs. They are the most shipped out there from the anime and manga! The small eps of the random guy our nice but its just for the entertainment for a while. I really hope that Tatsuya Endo starts putting his heart and soul more into SPY X FAMILY or the anime and the manga will just always stay below the most popular. I want it to reach that most popular stage! And I hope it does
