So glad I found this channel. I started out my knife journey with counterfeit knives to. They are a good way to try out different knives without breaking the bank. I now have 11 real Spyderco knives thanks to these counterfeits. I have probably have over 40 counterfeits with different levels of quality. One thing to keep in my with the lower end counterfets is the sellers will tell you the real steel is D2, it rarely if ever is D2. Simple way to test for D2 is put a drop of mustard on the blade for a few hours, if it it real D2 you will have a permanent stain where the mustard is. Every single spyderco counterfeit I have is some sort of stainless, probably 3Cr or 5Cr at best.

Thanks for the tip! There are some sellers that are using D2 & 9CR18MOV (stainless) - both decent steels. And there are others (LOTS) with truly CRAPPY steel! There are some good channels like "Luv Them Knives" that do a lot of steel testing from different sources to see what's "real" & what's not so good. But this game is always a crap shoot - never know what you'll get! Thanks!

I really like knockoffs. I got about 5 Benchmade Bugout counterfeits. Only one is any good, the carbon fiber model, and it's one of my favorite knives now. I don't use knives for much, so I can't justify the price of a real Bugout. I wish it didn't have the Benchmade name on it, but nobody sees it and I would never tell anyone it's real if they did.

I agree on all points. Today D2 is common and inexpensive, but it wasn't long ago that it was considered a premium steel and was a little pricey. Personally, I like D2 for its edge holding ability at a very low price.

I own the real (2 of them) and the clone for the bodacious. The difference is pretty obvious as you’ve noted in your video. The fake is way too thick in the blade and the handle as you’ve said. Fit and finish is of course worlds apart. But it’s 1/10 the price. The manix 2 and shaman seem to be really close to the real versions I wonder why they deviated so much for the bodacious

Good question. I always wonder about those things too. I’m definitely starting to see that some knockoffs are really well made while others are total crap - even within the same brands/models. So I think there must be different Chinese factories producing clones. Some just do a better job. Maybe they have better equipment. Either way, I still like this “fat” version as far as being a beefy pry bar with a decent edge on it. 🤷‍♂️

Maybe. But I’m not so sure that the people who want to buy these cheap knockoff versions were really going to buy the real thing. And I've talked to a lot of people who were never interested in the real Spydercos until they tried one of these clones and discovered how good they feel. These have turned a lot of people into buyers of the real knives. It’s definitely an interesting question.

This is true. Thanks for pointing it out. I’m pretty sure they’re selling knives that are made in many of the same Chinese factories. But the fact that they’ve been around for so long suggests that they are mostly selling the higher quality clones and knockoffs. The knives I’ve gotten from them have all been higher quality than the Temu knives. Thanks!

That's about $50 USD. So you're probably going to get a much better quality version - especially with the titanium. I've got several nice titanium versions coming up for review here shortly. Some are very nice! Let us know if you like it!

technically the PM is only 0.02" shorter when fully open. But the PM2 blade is definitely shorter at 3.44" vs the Bodacious blade at 3.66".

Yeah they aren't propped by the CCP to deliberately hurt foreign companies. Spyderco pays their employees real money and they get insurance. They do research and development for heat treats which is what actually makes the knife able to take and hold an edge. You can polish a turd made of d2 but it's still d2.

I very much doubt it’s D2 steel. Probably no name “stainless steel” or “surgical steel”. Basically mystery metal that was, more than likely, melted down from scrap found in a junk yard.

It is hard to know for sure. But some of the companies like OK-knives have been around for many years now, and have had buyers send their knives out for testing to confirm. So it really depends on where you're buying from. With a "no name" company on Aliexpress or temu, you could be getting anything. There's a good YT channel "Luv Them Knives" that tests these kinds of knives. Very interesting!

These are essentially gas station knives with a skin. My advice to anyone watching would be buy a cheap chinese knife if you want a cheap chinese knife, theres plenty of companys that put the cost towards making a better knife as opposed to copying a design. Miguron, sencut, vosteed, petrified fish, to name a few. It might not help this dudes channel (and potential affiliations to these shady companies) but your fingers will thank you later when you still have them all.

I don't disagree with you at all. There are a ton of really great knives in this price range that are not knockoffs and have much better quality. If someone wants a "real" knife that they can trust, they SHOULD buy those quality brands instead of these cheap knockoffs. 👍
