Spyderco Police 4 Lightweight - FULL Review

This is one of Spyderco’s most criminally underrated models. It’s so much blade in such a thin and light package, excellent blade:handle, and at a bargain price. It’s like a “super” Endura FFG.

As a long time Endura fan I love the Police 4 lightweight. A little big for pulling out at the office its perfect for dog walking and hiking and food prep outdoors. It carries in the pocket like a much smaller knife.

For what this knife is designed for, VG10 is a great choice, not too sure why everyone knocks vg10.. it is a premium steel. Just because it doesn’t have massive amounts of vanadium carbides or tons of cobalt in it lol….

mine it kinda dolls fast but is hones Razer Sharp it's a great steal Plus you don't have to worry about it rusting at all mine has a nice panina it's 🔥

this one harkens back to older spydie designs which are so classic when you look at them today. the vg-10 makes more sense in a larger blade where there is more edge to share the dulling....

Never owned a Police model personally. I recall the originals had a stainless handle and a false edge. I wonder at what iteration the latter was phased out?

The original Police model is still in production. It now has the four-way pocket clip, but is otherwise largely unchanged.

I bought mine through Spyderco's military discount program. I also have the K390 G10 version and I had to file the liner edges, which were extremely sharp. The lightweight version was fine as is, though the VG10 does not have the same edge retention. I think I heard Spyderco was going to introduce other steel options to the new Police Lightweight, but I'm not sure.

I HAVE THE SPYDERCO TATANKA WHICH IS EVEN BIGGER THAN THIS ONE. I ALMOST GOT RID OF IT BUT I'M GLAD I DIDN'T. IT'S THE BIGGEST FOLDER SPYDERCO HAS EVER MADE. I DON'T WORRY ABOUT PRICE. i love frn and the police 4 lightweight is now available in blue frn with k390 steel--about 160 $. you can now have the delica, endela, endura, and the police 4 in k390 if they're not sold out.

I see the appeal for sure, and could even live with the price if I could get past an initial justification for buying it in the first place lol. Maybe it's just me, but I think with Spyderco these days, you're almost always getting a better bang for your buck when you spend more.

The only thing about the Native Chief that bugs me is it doesn't have stainless steel liners like the Police 4 . Other wise it would be an easy decision between those two . I wonder what the strength differences are between SS liners and G10 ?

Because it’s not “tacticool” enough. They either carry garbage smith&wesson branded knives or automatics because they think they’re the only ones who can legally carry them, and they get discounts from companies like Benchmade.

My dad has been a cop for 25 years and carries a p4 lw. Carried a military for years and a stainless police before that. But yeah most dont bc they aren't knife nuts like us.

I have carried the same Spydie Military 440V steel (that ages a guy!) since I started in 92. Used it so much but never for weapon thankfully in all those hours on patrol. Still going strong. Have had dozens of other Spydies and never switched the Military out of my duty pants.

Off topic but if you had to choose one I watched your para 3 s110v video lm looking at that one or the blue m390 bento box one there's like a $15 dollar difference the m390 is the cheaper one

I think it just isn't competitive price wise from my perspective. I feel like if I was getting a ridiculously long knife why would I go for this over say the Voyager XL or the Recon 1? The recon 1 is cheaper and has better materials and they're both made outside of the US so that's no excuse here. The Voyager XL is larger so if you're paying by the inch it's got the advantage, it's also much much cheaper for similar materials. Edit: To clarify I don't think it's a bad knife. Spyderco, fit and finish is solid, and so is their heat treat. Their ergos are usually great, and this is a lightweight knife for the size it is. And they do clips better than cold steel, even though they refuse to make their own deep carry clips for some reason. But for the price I'd expect more.

@jack thursby I mean I'm not going to say that's a good or bad choice. If you like it and the price doesn't bother you then you should go for it. But for me I think $30 for a half inch of VG10 blade and a finger choil is just too much. I think in general Spyderco's prices aren't super competitive and I think this is on the low value end even for Spyderco.

My brother in Christ, ALL spyderco's are small knives to a cold steel fanboy 😂 I literally call the police my "baby knife" because it's so much smaller than everything else I carry. Nice to have, but let's not pretend it's a "large" knife haha

4.4"... that's a big boi, a bit too big for my tastes. The tips on a loooot of spydercos are def. something to be careful with. I do like how the blade is angled down a bit though, but $115... oof.
