Ah, beauty is in the eye of the owner ... I've had the original for years and love it. I actually like the prehistoric looks, it is unique and doesn't look like every other knife on the market. I like the looks of it too, looks like a "dodo bird" to me. I bought the K390 model and loved it so much but didn't wanna mess up the premium blade edcing the knife. So I ordered a Stretch 2 original VG 10 model from Amazon for only 67$ bucks, how could I pass that deal up? I paid more for my Delica like a year ago. lol.

I've been looking for a quality large companion pocket folder for my carry that's thin but large and sturdy enough for real use. This might just fit the bill perfectly. Do look at the original Stretch folder as well, though. It is quite a bit more EDC friendly and sports close to 1/4" more cutting edge than does the larger Stretch 2 . The back lock stoutness on the "2" tends toward overkill for EDC. You might not like that at all, and the reviewers fail to mention this. The Stretch is still more substantial in lockup cross section and a bit in back lock stiffness than is my Endura, for example. Sadly discontinued (not so sadly for me as I own a perfect example in ZDP -- value retained, you could say); but they're out there to be had for what a discerning secondary market says they're worth.

You're welcome, David. I am happy I could be of some assistance. I got lucky acquiring my ZDP-189 Stretch. It had been a Spyderco afficionado's N.O.S. It is the most perfectly flawless example among all my Spydercos in fit, finish, precision of blade edge grind, and action. 😊

It's zdp-189, and I have the brown G10 version in ZDP-189. Damn good knife and it holds it's edge for a very long time.I prefer G10 over the frn handles, but either or are good users. It's just a personal preference. It's a great skinner if you're a hunter.

It's not really "British Racing Green" at all (see Jim Clarke's F1 Lotus or a '60's A-H Sprite / MG Midget or Triumph TR-4a). It's a *great* green, though, more a deep "forest green" and not really "military", so it stands out from the crowd. The color is a winner. -- Design professional for many decades
@frederickj.7702
@frederickj.7702 4 жыл бұрын
@ ablackprep... You missed the point. *They* didn't make up that color name, they "appropriated" one with an established, storied public history and stuck it onto *their own, rather different* choice of FRN color for the ZDP-189 line. British Racing Green is simply more "green" in tone, to be brief about it. Maybe "close enough", if those are your standards... and this *is* a small point for most folks (unless you have professional concern and experience defending trademarks!). This being the internet, some habitually argumentative type (not necessarily you, ablackprep, I hasten to add) might wish to argue my judgement, I know (Me: former Triumph GT Plus & BSA motorcycle owner, etc., BTW: I was *there* , then, in other words. I did get British vehicle 'tech' out of my system! 😣). I gave you multiple references -- next time take some moments to look one or two up when similar circumstances arise before you jump to your own conclusions. Just some friendly advice... (not even the modest reference to some particularly pertinent pro credentials tipped you off that I might not be quite *so* confused? Though I guess that's always possible. Sheesh...). Re: the edit above -- I kept the gist and added a bit of extra info for clarity; and also 'softened' the tone of the response some, as I thought it may have unintentionally read a little too snarky in a couple of spots. It was rushed. Sorry, and good luck to you with your endeavors in the hobby.

I don't really like the lightweight scales spyderco uses vs the G10 its partly aesthetic but I worry that they will break under quasi hard use or in an emergency situation. Does anyone know if they are reasonably tough? My pops has a delica with lightweight scales and he likes it....idk. Maybe it's a stupid concern.
@frederickj.7702
@frederickj.7702 4 жыл бұрын
You're going to snap the blade somewhere before you ever get close to breaking that handle, in all probability. The Stretch and Stretch 2 have rugged steel liners, and these models are significantly better built and finished than other popular Spyderco FRN / FRCP folders... and the lock back mechanism has a larger cross section and a beefier action. These were designed for game hunters and are beyond just "reasonably tough". They cost a little more than some other of the Spyderco Lightweights (or used to), and it's easy to see where the money went. Don't be fooled by the useless opinions of commenters who know nothing about these except that generically, they're "FRN + VG-10". These people typically have never had any serious intention to buy these, but who think they're looking cool by whining that Spydercos cost too much. -- *Owner* , Stretch ZDP-189 *and* Stretch 2 VG-10 P.S.- The lock back action on the Stretch 2 is quite noticeably firmer than that on the already stout Stretch. Not for sissies, ha, ha... The original Stretch will be a better EDC use choice for most than the more specialized (for hunters) Stretch 2; but, hey, that's up to you in the end. Either Stretch looks especially great in the "basic black", BTW.

The Stretch is such a weird knife, one of the very few Spydercos I don't like. It definitely hit every branch on the ugly tree and then climbed up and did it all again,. But more importantly I don't think it's a very comfortable knife to use (large size hands here too), it just seems "off" to me and if I want a heavier use blade I grab the Manix 2 every day of the week. Of course this is all subjective but it isn't the knife for me. I carry and use it but if I ever sell or trade anything this is at the top of the list.

@frederickj.7702 4 жыл бұрын
The blade aesthetics are just fine in person -- form follows function, which is a beautiful thing... Don't go on some thumbnail pics or other under-representative static manufacturer's imagery you see on Amazon or on knife dealer websites. You probably will miss a more holistic and integrated mental picture of the design, then. The reviewer here went on and on *way* too much with *his* opinion. State your view... and move on. Most of the rest of you can think for yourselves, maybe... some of you.

I have VG-10 black FRN Delica Wharncliffe variant and HAP-40 version. Glad to have them. I'm here bec I like GT videos and wanted to learn bec I got notifications on Straight Spine Stretch two. I did not know it was a heavy & sturdy Spydie. I thought it was good because it had more straight section compared to Endura being all belly. Now I see its a skinner! A heavy FOLDING skinner. @frederickj.7702
@frederickj.7702 4 жыл бұрын
@ Mind Over Matter... I will give you due credit for saying here, "not for *me* " [emphasis, mine] and "IMO", rather than dissing Spyderco *catagorically* for being [generally speaking] "overpriced". We all know this opinion comes up all the time in these threads! In fact, I defy you to show me another *similarly lightweight, and similarly strong* full 3-1/2" bladed *true* , de facto high Rockwell alternative for about the same price as my ZDP-189 original Stretch folder, explicitly designed and built for a working environment (in this case, designed for hunters... taking apart multiple *deer* in the field, for example!) which is this much plainly "higher end" in fit, finish, action, and feel. Don't even think of comparing an Endura directly without qualification. I'll even concede doubters fifteen or twenty bucks, if you all insist... but if *that* amount is just going to ruin your day and eliminate *any* notably, and "different" quality knife design *categorically* from your consideration, then I suggest you really have your sense of priorities pretty much twisted around and confused. Life is too short for this sort of pedantic, skinflint judgement, repeated again and again and again... I also have a VG-10 Stretch 2, and the basic point isn't that much different... though it's been written over and over again that Spyderco's ZDP upgrade is a value added bargain for the usual, relatively modest additional cost. Compare what some recently enlightened (disillusioned), savvy-er and less personally defensive owners of heavily hyped M390 folders must be thinking after recent exposés. ZDP-189, as Spyderco normally executes it, is by contrast, the real deal. Also, if you think a Stretch with up front cost loaded FRN mold production plus fully skeletonized, substantial steel liners -- and not just with a few holes -- is by any significant measure "lower in materials cost" than a flat slab G10 iteration, you may have been ingesting too much reviewer shilling for manufacturers and their "premium" mark-ups and marketing strategies for your own good... 'cause if you still think so, you're dreaming. Again, it's all fine to say "not for me", but I am suggesting that I have have yet to see so much as one commenter in these threads complaining about the cost of FRN Spydercos who has given the slightest indication of grasping the points I have made. And, BTW, no, I don't want a new VG-10 Delica either; but I did buy a V-Toku2 Endura, and I am glad I did! As countless Spyderco owners and lovers have realized, FRN is a *feature*, not a fly in the ointment. It's a matter of priorities. As a person who built an in-house advertising / marketing department from the ground up in the metals manufacturing industry and is a graphics & industrial designer of over 40 years pro experience, I can assure you that more than a little of the commercial marketing jazz-ma-tazz I continually see repeated in KZbin knife reviews is in terms of naïvity and acquiescence rather ruefully comical to me. Best of luck to you, Mind Over Matter, in the choices you do make! Get something you love. Cheers...
