I live in AZ, where there are literally no laws restricting blade size or mechanism, but I still bought one of these knives on a whim because I liked the blade shape and wanted a spyderco that didnt have a black handle. Turns out I love this knife, its great for edc and light use, its light, non-threatening, and its actually really convenient being able to open and close it using just the thumb hole.

So glad Spyderco addresses this issue! Next time I go visit my Dad's side of the family across the pond a few of these are coming with me. They will make perfect gifts for my male cousins!

Ahhhh the G10 knife I was involved in the design of as part of British Blades, it was my idea to put the UKPK Design Team stamping on the spine. Got two of those knives and it's my EDC. I am lucky to consider Sal, Eric and Gail as friends. Great people.

I'm currently living in Scotland working on my PhD and have been carrying the UKPK everyday for the last year and a half. I can't hate the thing enough. I have cut my knuckles or pinched my fingers over a dozen times because it does not lock (I think part of the problem is that I find it hard to hold because I have large hands; so someone who has smaller hands might not have these problems). I can't wait to move back to the US so that I can start carrying my Spyderco Military again.

Idiotic laws, having a knife without a lock makes it all around less safe than a locking one...
@averageoutlaw
@averageoutlaw 9 жыл бұрын
The reason our knives can lock, is so when you stab someone the knife is more likely to close than penetrate, obviously we're not all cruising the streets for a stabbing victim, but sometimes when people drink or take narcotics they do stuff they wouldn't usually do. But yeah from a user perspective I agree with you, a locking knife is much safer
@flyingwondercat739
@flyingwondercat739 9 жыл бұрын
averageoutlaw But you can still buy normal knives (especially cutlery for food and stuff) so does it make any sense to expect a criminal to use a 3" pen knife when he could easily just grab a bigger one?

I am US Military stationed in the UK, and I picked up the Foliage Green G-10 Leaf Blade and Foliage Green G-10 Drop Point (Full flat grind too, and even rarer) once I found out I would be coming here. I carry them every day (one is in a neck sheath that I wear under my shirt, other clipped to pocket), and they are every bit as good as locking knives for EDC, and even most of my duty tasks. Incredible knives. I will continue to EDC these even when I am back in the USA in a few years.

In the UK we can own lockers but not carry them without "good cause" like work, camping etc.

Uk seems to be a weird country. They are allowed to use supressors on their hunting rifles but not to use a fixed blade folding knife?! Glad I live in Austria :-)

Just moved to the UK. The laws here are insane. "Lets all be victims" ... and also tear open boxes and such. Because reasons? I just got a UKPK, 2014, they've tightened up the spring considerably. Still easy to open with one hand but safer on the unintentional closing resistance. In a self defense scenario you'd probably be safer keeping something like this in your pocket.
@TheAlexagius
@TheAlexagius 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah people here are quite insane when it comes to self defence, only in northern ireland do they have any sense (you can get CCW there, buts its very hard)
@averageoutlaw
@averageoutlaw 9 жыл бұрын
The law states that you can carry anything if you have a legitimate reason too, if you feel justified to carry a locking knife then do so
@TheAlexagius
@TheAlexagius 9 жыл бұрын
averageoutlaw The "legitimate reason" is on the police, not on you, as in they have a list of what is "legitimate"; if you carry it for protection or "just 'cause" then it isn't good enough for them

Thanks for giving this knife some attention! I've had by grey leaf FRN UKPK for about a year and have gotten some great EDC use from it. Spyderco have really done the UK market a favour by producing a blade geared towards our needs and laws. I've also got a Spyderco Squeak, which is a similar type of knife to the UKPK leaf FRN in design except for having a 2" blade. Might be worth a look!

Great, spot on review, Nutnfancy. My first UK Pen knife was the G10/CPM S30V with orange colored handle scales. That knife is so cool that I bought a couple of the foliage green G10 versions (both drop and leaf). I also bought the Titanium and the Carbon Fiber. All very cool. I decided to add the FRN's just to round out the collection. Totally agree with you on spring strength. The only one that I don't have is the black. Overall, great utility blades.

I got the black plain leaf one, I just love it. Can't carry a locking/fixed blade in Israel, and this thing is just cool. I still can't bring it if i'm going to a mall, school, theater, a club, a sports court or a game room. I find the tension to be amazing for what it is here, an alternative to another slipjoint (which always look the same and have almost no tension).

great review on a cool series of knives. they are great for edc in the uk and cover about 99% of the cutting jobs needed on a daily basis. we can carry a locking blade if we have a good reason, but for having on you all the time, these are great. if you like a stronger slip joint you should look at the boker plus trance 42 or the byrd tern (made by spyderco and has the full back spring like the g10 version reviewed here). thanks for giving the uk a mention, love your channel :)

Another UK TNP'r here - had the FRN UKPK for over a year and acquired the G10 via secondary market a couple of months ago. I would thoroughly agree with everything you said about both of them. The FRN is fine - until you try the G10 version which is absolutely superb. Thx for the review though - I think TNP is having a (small) influence on the debate here and getting more people into knives, guns and all good outdoors stuff - so keep up the great work!

Yeah the G10 one looks great because of the FFG, G10 handle, and stronger spring. Thanks for remembering blade centering. I got a Tenacious just recently and the blade centering is terrible! It's about as bad as it could be. My Skyline is not very good but I'm okay with it. The Tenacious though I'm pretty sure I have to send it back because it rubs the liner completely.

You got me into Spydercos. First a Para Military 2 then a UK Penknife FRN black leaf shape in spring 2011. Used it for a surf trip to Portugal and travel to non permissive countries and EDC it ever since though I have a Strider, Benchmade and others. Side effect, it is legal as the combination of locking blade and one hand opening became a bit outlaw-ish in Germany. As I do not recognize the government to rule my life I do it anyway. Met Sal Glesser in person, awesome guy.

I was looking at these, and I saw them advertised with S30V steel, but it gin-1 price point, about $40. I don't even know what that gin-1 is...and to risk buying it just to get it in sub standard steel..dunno. will settle for the new delica, but i would buy it at that price point in S30V for sure. BTW Nutn, you never address the choil difference, these penknives have choils, the byrd series have choils, cat& chicago too...not the delicas nor enduras, what is the difference in usage??

@OriginalOwner777 No, I am serious about that. I checked eBay yesterday on that. In the US incl. exchange rate, the price was approx. 31 Euros. The local vendors sold at 65 Euros. By exchange rate logic only, in Europe (where the € is used) all American knives cost less than in the US (because 1,3 dollars is 1 euro roughly), but in fact it is the other way around, the only way to get it at a low price is to import it yourself.

Hey Nutnfancy, I know you have been reviewing knives for a long time, and I have been following you for a while. It appears to me that Spyderco has quite a nice hook on you. I mean that they fit all the points in a knife that you find well in any EDC. @maczuka "Better" is subjective. IMO (note, my experience) it holds an edge better but is just a hair harder to sharpen. It's not something you'll notice for EDC tasks, just take care of it when you should and you're all good. From what I've read it has higher corrosion resistance so if that's an issue I'd say it's better. I baby my knives a bit (shapen often, clean often, oil often), I have no complaints with GIN-1 (or, for that matter, AUS8) for EDC.

In the UK you are allowed to carry any knife if you have a justifiable reason. For example you may be going fishing so you are allowed to take a fishing knife with you, if your scuba diving you can take a scuba diving knife with you and so on. I know people who go hunting and camping big knives and they never get any bother.
