Spyro Gyra's new release Vinyl Tap, their first album of new material in six years, is sure to excite their worldwide fan base as well as to bring new listeners into the fold. Never content to rest on their prodigious work of the past, they have once again challenged themselves to apply their iconic sound to an idea that makes this release stand out from all of its predecessors. With Vinyl Tap, they have decided to craft an entire album of inventive jazz covers from pop favorites from the vinyl era. But these versions of familiar tunes will surprise the listener as well as entertain them. Whether it's turning Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" into a Latin big band sound or making a tender ballad out of the Beatles' "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away", this release will impress at every turn. They weren't satisfied with just turning Johnny Rivers' 1960's hit "Secret Agent Man" into a rollicking party jam. They added an uptempo melody from "Alfie's Theme" to make something brand new, "Secret Agent Mash". There are also more conventional approaches with faithful versions of songs like War's "The Cisco Kid" and the Doobie Brothers' "What a Fool Believes". Spyro Gyra's haunting version of Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home" is going to radio ahead of the release, so we anticipate high consumer awareness.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh man! What an incredible fretless bass sound! Rich as melted butter and honey; like a bass sitar. Mmmm. And that snappy snare drum sans snares ... Then the piano enters with the motif from "Dear Mr. Fantasy." And the band hints at the motif throughout the song ... BRILLIANT! A+++++

Loved this song by Blind Faith. When I first read they were doing cover songs, I questioned how well they could pull it off. Now I know. Great rendition to make this song theirs. I have been sampling other songs on this album and have not been disappointed.Great to hear them again.

A couple of years ago I travelled over to Tallinn to see SG live. With me I had a letter addressed to Jay Beckenstein, in which I told him about this idea I had of SG doing an album of cover versions. I had listed a bunch of songs that I felt would suit the band perfectly. Songs that when I listen to them I almost can hear how fantastic they would sound with a SG treatment. For instance I wrote that almost any tune by Paul Carrack would fit the bill. Imagine my surprise when I suddenly realized they were playing a bluesy version of Tempted! So the band was actually already thinking a bit in the same direction as I had. Later this was confirmed when they announced Vinyl Tap. Of course, there are none of my propositions on the album, something I never expected to happen anyway. It was just another fan letter with a twist. I gave it to Julio and asked him to hand it over to Jay. Julio being such a friendly guy, I'm sure he delivered the letter. BTW any hopes for that solo album, Julio? Needless to say, I'm eagerly looking forward to Vinyl Tap. And I'm still amazed by this coincidence of timing and thought.

VINYL TAP is top notch, ultimately NOT in any sense a rote, by the numbers covers record, but SPYRO GYRA taking the blueprints of 10 great compositions by various jazz, rock, and popular artists of the 60s and 70s and going crazy with those basic blueprints and rebuilding/re-finishing the "houses and mansions" that end up being the recordings on this record in wildly different fashions than the original composers did. A Spyro Gyra record in every way shape and form.......they put their own genius stamp on other people's compositions on this entire record. For example you got a classic Latin big band jazz reinterpretation of the rock band Cream's Sunshine of your Love! You can hear the "Sunshine" riff+ main theme during the refrain but the rest of it is CLASSIC Spyro Gyra flexing its considerabl musical virtuosity and chops on the Latin jazz side of the band which is always been one of its strengths. The same with Johnny Rivers SECRET AGENT MAN has the main theme yes but the other 90% of it is pure Spyro Gyra genius and so on. THE ONLY way to find out is to LISTEN to VINYL TAP! INVEST in it! INVEST in it!!!
