The more I use this method, the more I notice this is how I've been tought to study by my parents. We would read the chapter together, than while I was answering the questions (peaking was okay) my mom or dad (usually mom) would elaborate other questions rephrasing them and after checking if my first answers were right they would start their own questions. We would do each subject of the day as I got home from school and one day prior to the tests. I remember it. Studying was fun, I felt like learning for real. I was an excellent student and would even teach my classmates for years. But after my parents divorce I just didn't find studying fun anymore and couldn't tell why, I would the first 3 steps over and over (but would never to the last ones) and just could understand a thing or two. I failed math for 3 years, failed physics for 2 and database and programming the last year(I did info in highschool) I felt like a complete failure, that all the work and effort put on me was for nothing. But yet I was still hungry to learn. I hear and read articles almost everyday, taking time on understand what's explain and rereading/hearing just because I found it interesting This was a really long comment, but I wanted to out this out of my chest. I am happy I am learning again and taking my time to dedicate to know more about my interests. Thank guys.

I think you corralate studying with you parents relationship. And because you not have them there doing it with you making it fun.... You fell out of love with the process. Rewire your brain. When you study moving forward maybe you should call your mom amd have her ask you questions like she did in ther past. Call your dad and maybe you can go over it with him the next day. Maybe even do a grou chat with them and maybe it will remind you that you are stilled loved. And they oved you enough to give you a gift that keeps on giving so you can have a great life for yourself. Goodluck

I'm in high school and I've been using this method for ages, though I'd never heard of SQ3R or your revised version! I had a lecture from my school about the ineffectiveness of rereading vs effectiveness of active recall and kind of went from there, as I'd also found I could never learn just from looking at notes. Of course I attend class, but only make notes to ensure I'm following along (or if the teacher forces me to), as I prefer to give my full attention to understanding the content. I've often had complaints from teachers about having a messy book, which is apparently a problem as 'ill need to revise from it later', but I never revise from my own notes. This is how I learn: 1. Give the lesson my full attention, making notes only to guide my understanding (this is my *survey* step, as when I come to revision I will already have a good understanding of the material) 2. Check old papers to find any weak points, and bear in mind any parts of the material I know I struggle with as I'm reading (question) 2. Read the textbook to make sure I have a good grasp of all the ideas 3. If there are any very weak points that I need to teach myself, I'll sometimes make notes (but only notes that explain the material in a different way to the textbook, e.g. my own diagram) just to try and make the ideas make sense in my head (*Rephrase*) 4. Make a flashcard deck of any facts I need to memorize and anything I don't already remember easily 5. Revise the flashcard deck (*Recall*) 6. Do some practice papers theng go back to any bits I still haven't got down fully (*Repetition*)

I like your update -- it's very practical. I had to watch twice because I got to the end and realized you didn't include READ. When am I supposed to actually READ the text I'm studying?! On second viewing, I see that you built that into the REPHRASE step. It makes sense in the end, but maybe it's easier to just call it SQ4R? Thanks again for the good content.

First off, this was a great video and I'm very glad I found both of y'all. I have a few questions though: How would this method fit in a lecture-based class? Would our questions be based on what our professor says? If so, doesn't that sort of eliminate the need for standard/traditional notes?
@KoiAcademy
@KoiAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
great questions! (and sorry for late reply) In a lecture based class, the professor will usually start off the lecture with "learning objectives" or "agenda" something like that. Those are your questions as well as when they say "hint, hint this will be on the test." The act of taking notes is great for learning things for the first time and grasping concepts (this is backed by science). but when you are reviewing for the test, re-reading your notes is not great. Use active learning. Check out our free course! skl.sh/3hvj3PA

Recall and rephrase are practically in the same step. You would recall the information by rephrasing it in baby terms rather than an exact definition. This revamped SQ3R method should probably be better structured as: Survey, Question, Read, Recall (through rephrasing), and Repetition. Don't you think?

Really interesting video! But I have some questions to ask you: 1) What if the book you're reading hasn't a final-chapter question box? Where do you take the questions? 2) What about all the informations and the details that are not directly involved in your questions?
@KoiAcademy
@KoiAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
hey great questions! you are right, not all books will have question boxes. You may have to find your own (ask teacher, ask other students who have taken the class before, look at old tests of your class, or even come up with your own questions). SQ3R is a good starting framework, but once you start to understand the material, you will begin to see how ANY of the material might be asked on the test (even ones not directly related to your questions)

First SURVEY the chapter, then predict, search and find the QUESTİON and READ the chapter in expectation of getting the answers. Once you completed the first 3 steps, Write down the answers with your own words (REPHRASE) into your flashcard apps. So, you can achieve rephrase, recall and repetition steps in one move. All you have left to do is to use your flashcard app regularly in order to RECALL, and do spaced REPETITION

What if there's a lot of stuff that I need to learn for a specific subject? Should I just limit myself to something? Because I'm afraid flashcards aren't going to be enough to contain all the information needed. Or do those flashcards just serve as a really basic theory, like terms and definitions, features etc. without detailed explanations? While everything else (the explanations for the features, terms, for example) you have to recall from the Feynman notes, for example? I'm a law student.

Hey mike and matty, I am 10-16 years old first of all this was a great video, my question was how to use this method in... let's say mathematics or English or any_book-based subject, for example, there are no past papers or any type of question how will you study for it, also is there any writing included in this technique because S = survey so no reading and you said about a technique which you said "after every section, pause the video or close the book and recite or write down all you remember" so how does this work with NEW SQ3R. Also, I am a highschool student in class 9 at IGcse planning to prepare for IG-O and A levels since I am in high school I have more than 7 subjects to learn how to manage time and balance between subjects in the short time since I will start my exams at 19 February so how I do all of this I was tinkering around sq3r a bit I still cant manage the time I use batches (b1 = 3 subjects etc..) I study 5 hours a day for all the other 3 subjects so how do I do it all and have a life(by life I mean study stuff that interests me) is it even possible? also, I think I am a kitsune.

Thank you so much for this. I have a question though: if you look for the answers to the questions whilst reading, how do you know if your answers are correct if your textbook doesn't include answers?

Not sure if my experience applies to medschool however during my undergrad, I always have this friend where we discuss theories and compare answers. Usually in our arguments, a reliable answer comes out. However, if both of us can't come up with anything, we ask our teacher during their consultation hours

Hi. I’m currently doing AP US History in 10th grade and we have to take notes everyday. My question is: Should I be taking notes? And if so, what should my notes be like? Should they be just questions?

When going through the Rephrase step, are you reading every word of the textbook or skimming to find the answers to your questions? Just wondering if you guys recommend reading every word of the textbook?

Can you include your sources? When you say "science shows this is an inefficient way to study" I would like to see what science you're referencing. Including sources is important, otherwise I am just assuming that you're speaking from a potentially biased perspective. (For example, wanted to include this video as part of a discussion, but since you don't cite sources, I can't because it's not credible.)
