I'm no Star Citizen fanboy. I haven't put $1 towards this game and I've been following it for years. I'm 40 years old I don't get hyped. I am a sci-fi/space fanboy, however, and can say that after watching this I am sold. I'm still not going to buy a damn thing until it comes out, certainly not some $1000-$20,000 ship. I do love the idea of buying the bare minimum entry, a little ship, and gradually increasing standing/money over time to be able to acquire the best there is. That appeals to be in a huge way. Anyways, great cinematics mixed with some gameplay. This is the beginning of the game, so cinematics are going to be heavy during that period always, boys. Relax.
@FlashyJoer3 ай бұрын
For clarity, you can pledge for an entry level ship, like a Mustang Alpha, for $45. And then you get a steep discount on Squadron 42, for another $45. Not sure what the pricing for Squadron will be once its ready for consumer purchase, so just putting this out there as an fyi... its what I personally did. And of course, because I bought the Mustang Alpha, that ship belongs to me forever, even if its destroyed in a fight, I get a replacement at no cost (any ship purchased prior to Star Citizen going to 1.0 release build has lifetime insurance and warranty, so you wont need to spend ingame credits - money you earn doing missions and jobs, not real money - to get a replacement). And... Star Citizen can be fun to get some practice in with the game's system and mechanics, since Squadron and Star Citizen are the same game, just one is single player campaign and the other is an MMO.

If you have been a gamer for a while this is the type of game we dreamed of when playing Wing Commander or Xwing vs Tie Fighter and all those other space sim games in the 90s. Idk if SC will ever be a thing....I hope so....but after 12 years it's hard to keep the faith. That being said, a single player version that is more guided and chopped up is definitely doable. They have got to get this right or SC is cooked imo. It looks solid so far, definitely needs a lot of polishing (and people are saying it shouldn't take 2 years to polish but from the video alone I can see they still have a ton of fine tuning to do so I can believe they need that long. Plus a lot of the team moved to SC. That little sequence of fps gameplay on the bridge defending against them rushing you alone looked really rough and needs work. I just hope the pull this off.

What really sets SQ42 apart from other games is the fact that everything is built at a 1:1 scale. Every time you look into the cockpit of a star fighter you're looking at a fully fleshed out and functional interior. The same can be said for these massive capital ships. Merely looking through a widow exposes vast internal spaces used for a large number of different functions. Whether it be the dining haul, command bridge, defensive battery's, or the hangers. We're really getting a level of immersion that doesn't exist anywhere else in gaming. Especially at this scale. That is why this looks straight out of a SciFi film rather than a playable game. Don't get me wrong, this has been over a decade in the making. But if they can deliver a 30-40 hour story with this kind of fidelity I will be impressed. I just hope we can see a lot of this stuff transition into SC.

@hermeister38703 ай бұрын
@@HexDrone9637squadron 42 is the sister game of star citizen, the former being a solo 35~ or so hour campaign the latter being...well, right now, its a very pretty alpha with impressive planet ship and other tech behind it but with a good amount of jank... Chris roberts started both games with a much smaller scope in kickstarter in i believe 2012 but as the kickstarter blew up they had to choose whether to stay with the minimal space game they had planned (similar in design to chris' previous games) or to do their dream game. After a vote in the community and talks among the studio they decided to scope up the hell out of the game. There would be issues through the years with chris' perfectionism wanting to redo stuff or implement new technologies which is in no small part contributing to the dev time. But its worth saying that the level of fidelity, depth and tech behind the game are simply not done by any other space sim, hell i'd go as far as to say no other game. The studio went from around 15 people (iirc) in 2012 to the 700+ last i checked. Which is another part for the dev time and budget, unlike other ips that had comparable budget, they started in a garage and had to build up a massive studio in real time, that, and make two ambitious games at once. If you want a more comprehensive idea for what star citizen the mmo is you can check the in-engine demo from last year's citizen con. Now while its an in engine and not ingame demo keep in mind, pretty much all of the video is what the game does look like and what you can actually do....assuming you dont encounter a major bug....yeah, it is an alpha ....for better and for worse. Only play the game if you're conscious of that fact and really want an in depth high fidelity space game, its not something as easy to learn as no man's sky for example. But in my humble opinion even through the flaws its worth checking out.

Calling this a "Gameplay Demo" is a huge stretch. It's mostly a 90 minute cutscene mixed with some very, very short gameplay elements. Exciting stuff like "walking around corridors" and "sitting in turrets and shooting at stuff" or some mediocre FPS combat - you know, revolutionary and innovative stuff, really. The Colonial Marines trailer had more actual gameplay compared to this, I fear. Now I do like the look of the battle and the cinematics. Cool space opera vibes. Only the wooden faces of the characters aren't too great, but I guess they can still tune facial animations until release in 2036. They all look a bit dull and lifeless, even though there's great actors behind them. Looking forward to its eventual release, but I still have lots of mixed feelings about this. They have to nail the gameplay portion and the mission design or else none of this pretty graphics spectacle matters.

Squadron 42 is not an open world game. It is a single player mission specific story-driven game. If you want the open world sandbox experience, then you want Star Citizen, the broader universe that Squadron 42 takes place in. Both have been works in progress for over a decade. S42 won't be out for another 2 years. SC is out now. You can play it as it is for free during one of the free-fly promotional events, or you can plunk down a little cash and by a starter ship and gain full access, you'll be grandfathered in when the game officially launches. Just be aware that you are playing an alpha-stage game, meaning that there are lots of bugs. But CIG listens to feedback and has made design changes based on said feedback. A lot of fun can be had, but you are part of an on-going testing process. If you bought a starter ship, then you've bought the game in advance and you get to see its setting ant its mechanics grow and evolve around you. Don't listen to naysayers calling it a scam. Make up your own mind by playing it yourself during the next free fly event. It will cost you nothing, and you will get a taste of what the game is at the state it is in at that time. If you like it, then buy a starter ship and continue your journey. If you don't, then walk away and maybe revisit during the next free-fly event. Perhaps things will be more to your liking then. It's not going to be for everyone. But many people are enjoying the journey through Alpha. Everyone looks forward to official release when it happens, but they know the road has been long and is still long. If they've bought in either as a backer or just a starter ship purchaser, they can come and go as they please with no penalty. Many do. I'm not playing it right now, but that's not the game's fault. I have unreliable internet service where I live at a speed that is at the narrowest bandwidth while still classifiable as broadband. But what I saw when I tried it was enough to convince me that the game is real. I'd be playing it every day, if I had better internet provider options where I live, but I don't so I can't. The point is, try it for yourself and make up your own mind. You owe that to yourself. And hey... those nay-sayers are free to dislike the game for whatever reason they have. But at the end of the day, who is to say that your own experiences will be the same as theirs. Just understand that the game is not done. Many mechanics are not in yet. But the game is technically "out". That happened the moment that anyone willing to buy a starter ship could do so. If you get into it, and look at where they plan on taking it, you can decide if what it is now is worth playing as it moves towards what they are saying it's going to be. No, I don't work for CIG. Nobody's paying me to talk up the game, or talk down those who don't like it. The only thing I can tell anyone to do is to make up their own mind. Then you can choose to talk up the game or talk it down based on your own experiences. But if either, at least you would be doing it based on your own opinion, rather than parroting someone else's

its worth noteing that S42 isnt open world , but it will open up a bit more then in this gameplay section, something like Metro Exodise for people who played that, but instead of traveling with the train car to some semi open locations, you will be with your space fleet
@Opnn8d13 ай бұрын
@@UnderdogSMO I guess it all depends on how one defines "open world." For me, open world means being able to go anywhere we want, anytime we want and do anything we want. I'm sure that succes or failure of missions, and actions during missions will have an impact on subsequent missions, and while this makes the game feel like a living world, by my personal definition, it does not constitute an Open World. In Squadron 42, the war between the UEE and the Van'duul is still going on, and willlikely be ended by the actions of the player. But we are looking at a page from the History of the 'Verse. It will begin with the Battle of Vega, and will likely continue until whatever decisive mission ends it. Star Citizen takes place after the events of S42, and as we learned from Day 2 of CitizenCon, will have a main story that we'll be able to play through, that will expose all aspects of that open world game. But we won't be required to complete it as a stand-alone experience. We'll be able to drop in and out of it as we see fit, allowing us to go anywhere at any time and do anything we want. We'll be rewarded as we progress through the main narrative, and completion of it will grant citizenship, among other things. This by my definition is an open world experience.

Star citizen isnt out it is an alpha since years and you cant "play" it. All you can do have a look how awsome it looks and test some ideas of all that makes the game in the future. But for now there is no "game expirience" because everything is still so broken that it is wasting a lot of your lifetime and leave you behind frustratet. From my 50 attemps to play this game over the last 12 years i had only 4 or 5 sessions where i was able to play more than 90 minutes without gamebreaking bugs. Simple stuff like testing a offroad vehicle on the surface for example. Spend 60 minutes last weekend to get that thing in my ship to fly it somewhere and had to stop trying to keep my sanity. This "game" is so buggy. Today i installed the new patch and because of the server wipe i tryed to set my Charakter with inventory and it kicked me 3 times off the server while doing so . Wasnt even able to go the Hangar because there were no interactions possible. If you dont have a life, kids and a wife you might pardon all this but if you are looking for 2 or 3 hours of a good expirience this isnt the game yet...it drives you mad!
@Opnn8d13 ай бұрын
@@Zaalogg I consider a game to be "out" regardless of its development state, the moment than anyone can purchase access to it in its current state. I never said that it was done. I never said it was the game it is planned to be. I simply said that it was out and anyone can access it. with the purchase of a starter ship, or free for a limited time during a free-fly event. When it does cross over to 1.0, anyone who backed it or purchased a starter ship which grants access, will still be able to play. Because they will have already bought it. You can also subscribe to gain access. So yes... It's very much out in it's current work in progress state.

For anyone who cares This seems to be a trope in sci-fi. In Star Trek: Voyager, Ensign Kim calls his female Captain “sir”, and she says “Ensign, despite Starfleet protocol, I don't like being addressed as sir.” And in Star Trek II they use “mister” when referring to the female Lt. Saavik. So it appears in the distant future, sir and mister are used non-gendered titles. But in the current U.S. military, you would not refer to a female officer as “sir”.

@@radradishradiator Not really a tradition. It's more like it was always expected back in the days for officers to be "Sirs" and not females who were uncommon at these positions, especially in navies which are very predominantly enrolling men. No women aboard ships. Therefore every recruit got taught to call an officer "Sir" and never got to ask the question "What if it's a female?". They didn't bother with that, to them females were in the kitchens back home. But times have changed and females are a thing now and they still don't bother with teaching "Ma'am" which is kind of a joke at this point but yeah. It's like fish: both male and female are called fish. But a cow and a bull is a different thing... Well, in the military, you call a male sergeant a sergeant, but the female sergeant is not a sergeantess or sergeanty or something like that. It's also a sergeant. No such thing has gendered ranks or variants to learn. Ironically the formal "Sir" does have a gendered variant though but they don't bother.

I honestly have mixed feelings about this demo. The quality of presentation is obviously solid. And, as a guy who's worked with Hollywood a-listers in game productions, I'm a little bit impressed at how good CG portraiture of marquee talent has gotten in the last couple of decades. But Chris has basically been making the same game for 30 years. And, as far as I can tell, succeeding and failing in pretty much the same ways every single time. Blown schedules, blown budgets, chaotic development, odd design choices, trite stories and cardboard characters. And yet, for all that, somehow the result manages to inspire a bunch of people to follow his dream. Whatever you think of Chris Roberts and his work, he's always been a top notch showman.

All failures publishers fault. EA then Microsoft. The big point of this was FINALLY developing a massive game withOUT a publisher like EA (Evil Asholes) fuckkng it up. 12 years to build a company, develop insane tools, knock down several 'impossible' tech hurdles, and actually build the most ambitious game ever? Sounds fair to me
@slopedarmor3 ай бұрын
this and star citizen are definately an interesting phenomenon, Initially lots of red flags, basically doomed to fail, they were just a few people in way over their heads, without the proper resources, getting more ambitious by the day, not to mention led by an artsy guy instead of a computer code expert (just like ksp2) etc. but then, over 12 years, they got the better part of a billion dollars and the possibility to create a 1000 person company while delaying the game 15 years xD as a fan i can only be happy that other people are funding this thing to its full potential, whatever that might be. scope creep seemed a huge problem, and seemed to make release less likely, but it also made me much more interested. makes me wonder if the ambitious/dumb scope creep is a key reason why people have thrown so much money at it. so is the scope creep a curse or a blessing for this project? one thing I am optimistic about for SQ42: at least im confident it will feel like a labour of love, and squadron will be more than unique enough to warrant its existence. the seamless transitions, both in gameplay and cutscenes, between all the locations, chapters, etc, alone will add a lot to the immersiveness and gameplay experience, and is at least unusual for a game of its type. Also, i am high, but i see parallels between chris' space ships and the castles in kingdom come deliverance; they are just more fleshed out and authentic than in other games, in a way that makes me happy. an unusually high drive for some form of first person authenticity? despite the extremely unrealistic setting in chris' case. the story and setting is definately cliche, but its a cliche that i like and BSG is already old, so, I'd love a new version Its just a game, I dont yet know how flawed it will be, but I already know I will enjoy the heck out of SQ42, cant wait to play it in 2026, 27, 28, i just take it as it comes man it is what it is, and i enjoy the ride. No doubt the prologue will look even better than it does now, and no doubt chris will feel compelled to keep working on it too long. The very first SQ42 footage ever was hilariously early in development (yet had already missed its initial release window) for comparison: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5bbfYimhq-DrZosi=SqYqqvgKlaThQTTl ah, the power of iteration also interesting to mention, because of star citizens (mostly) weekly youtube shows and video updates, (its almost like a 15 year long docu on their development, putting some devs' names and faces behind the effort) it is actually possible to be a fan of sc, while never having actually played or bought the game yourself, which is almost kinda unique for a game. It also keeps their playerbase more interested/informed/accepting/understanding/happy/hyped or immersed in the lore, during the slow and buggy development, so no doubt their youtube channel is an important factor in their success. thank you for listening to my TED talk
