Lauren, great videos. It looks like you have some oxidation going on at the wire connectors for the solar controller. Take each wire off and clean the wire ends and the screws with some fine sand paper. It’s a good idea to keep a can of electrical contact spray around to spray the wires and screws on all your electrical equipment connectors. Keep up the great content…

Hey Lauren, Most of the time you get intermittent functionality with electrical systems there is a loose or corroded connection somewhere. The unplugging and plugging the wire back in seemed to resolve the issue. Try brushing the contacts with a wire brush to make sure they are nice and shiny, then put a little dielectric grease on them and put back together. The dielectric grease will protect against future corrosion.

You have accomplished so much in such a short time, I am speechless. A natural born sailor. An off the grid champion. Your wind generator produces very little electricity. About 1/2 amp on a windy day. And it makes a lot of noise. The light comes on when it's charging. The fact that you unplug a wire when it fails, plug the wire back in tells me there is most likely a short somewhere. I would deep six and for get it. Also, you can air condition the boat for $ 500. The toughest sailors and charter guest can not stay in the Bahamas in the summer months without A/C. No one can do it but you. I think you should climb Mt. Everest or win Naked and Afraid next. No doubt you will win. About single hand sailing, my question is not how you do it - but who wants to do it? Remember Adam was lonely alone on earth. And he prayed and God sent you (Eve). As you said, "I am always alone but never alone." I know the feeling so well. When my wife sailed with me, I was a very happy sailor. When she left I was miserable on the sea alone. But never alone because of crew and friends. I did not have parents in Ft. Lauderdale, like ones with a huge sport fish to follow me around the Bahamas. I left home at age 16. My worst nightmare is running out of money in Ft. Lauderdale. I have nightmares often about this horrible fear. I use to say sailors are all running from something, including myself. But I felt like I was running to something. Sailing around the world to find that perfect girl. I didn't find her until I gave up. God found her. I never want to be alone on a boat again. Give me woman or give me death.

Do you have a voltage meter? You could check the output voltage to see if it is operating properly. It might need to be replaced. Circuit boards are full of resistors, capacitors etc. and sometimes they go bad or a solder connection breaks causing intermittent operations.

it's possible that the wind charger does not talk to the solar charger. In case the solar charger charges the batteries the voltage is going to be higher and with a higher voltage the wind charger thinks he has to go in bulk mode. To test this you may try disconnect the solar or check at night.

Cheers

while I don't know much about the wind gen but if you don't already, you may want to get a decent simple multmeter and sit in some YT EDU sessions to learn how to check for bonding, power (output) and basic circuitry. There could be something intermittent in the connections/wires/internals. There is also some good products out there for cleaning and protecting connections, I think Deoxit D5 might be good. If you have to get a tech aboard to fix it shadow him/her through the process to learn the system for next time. Congratulations on single handing that boat and hopefully putting it to lots of charter work!

Some simple guesses. Trouble shooting from couple hundred miles away not usually helpful. Controller overheating, programmed voltage point exceeded? Since it works then shuts itself off suggests internal setting is reached. With solar, wind, and the batteries all at different voltages, some fighting could be happening. Confident you will sort it out. Maybe isolate solar letting just the wind gen feed the batteries and check the voltage then swap the gen with the solar to check if there is a noticeable difference. Sorry, best I have to offer.

My generation was conditioned to get the degree, the high paying job, buy the stuff, and retire. We bought stuff we don't use because we are working to pay for it all. Sold a lot of snake oil so to speak. The new rich is totally having time to do what you want. The heck with things. All you young people reading this follow Lauren's example. Live before it's too late. Before you know it you're an old fart like me and all the medical issues that come with age to the point it's too late to kick off the hook. Rule of Thumb, Lauren: You know how to flick a finger from your thumb? With an over-zealous pig that you think might bite your thigh, lean down and flick, with high intensity, your finger on the nose of the pig. It doesn't register the methodology, i.e. the swing of your hand or in this case your finger, so it associates the sudden sting with getting its nose too close to you...and be prepared to repeat it until it 'learns'. Pigs are highly intelligent, and fast learners! Same thing with a horse that gets a bit bitey after being fed sugar, etc. The object of the exercise is not to frighten them, but to teach them that their nose will get stung if they get it too close to you. Never feed animals from your hand unless you teach them to be gentle in the process. It works with dogs too. A great way to teach a puppy not to try to snatch a juicy morsel out of your fingers, but to take it gently. Good luck!
