I'm not a master of the square grind hand file, but I've found that something that helps is using a round file to get rid of that little shelf you've got going on in the gullet every few filings.
@ocsplc
@ocsplc Жыл бұрын
Hey PEWPEW. I’ve tinkered with your idea. Buckin has recently commented on using round file to carve out gullet, but in my experience the rakers really make the gullet shelf irrelevant. The wood grain isn’t biting on that shelf due to the raker. Does it hurt to clean out the gullet? Hell no. I’ve done it both ways. Your thoughts?
@speshulk1207

@@ocsplc Side plate still contributes to the cut, and cleaning out that little shelf will lead to better cuts in the long run. At least in my experience and personal preference.

Hey Bucking ... thats a lovely touch you've got there. Its all your fault anyway .. had to order a Simington 451C from madsens1, its on the way. Cost me near enough 2KUS$ with postage and tax to New Zealand. And some square ground Oregon 063 3/8 one .404 ... be cheaper to get wood delivered but thats not what we all are about. Thanks for your tutorial, it all helps, these little tips. 3 corner Vallorb file works nice, you get a free edge for almost the same price.

I ruined 2 chains and got the 3rd pretty good my first time square filing. Converting a round chain to a square chain (full chisel round to square grind). My best experience came when I decided to "get my edge set" by going top down for the first few strokes. Give the file something to bite. If you go from bottom to top or the "traditional" way like Buckin says you run the risk of absolutely ski jumping your chain into oblivion. Taking the top right off of the tooth and then you're screwed. Set your edge from top to bottom and then finish your edge from bottom to top. Once you get the angle set, you're good. Easiest way I've found. Once I figured that out I can convert a chain in 30min.
@09rja
@09rja 2 ай бұрын
Where did you get the square file? Does the edge of the file file as well? It seems to be like a triangle file would be ideal for this. (I've done nothing but round filing until now.)

Howdy Buckin, I just started to square file by hand myself. I am with you I prefer coming from the bottom rather than over the top. Still have lots of room for improvement however the chain cuts faster with the square grind over the round. I will say though I have noticed that with the square grind the saw as more of a tendency to try to kickback. Nothing uncontrollable however something to be aware of.... Have A Day! ;~)

I think I understand but then when I put a file in my hand and go to file I get a little confused and question if I am doing it right...lol I bought a factory square chisel file in hopes that would help but lol still not fully grasping it. I will keep working till I get it though. I am grateful for the in depth videos though.

If the side plate goes straight up, its for hardwood, the less the angle of the side plate, the more it is for softwood and u have to get the gullet. If u get the gullet right, the chips will float faster through the tooth. Join our square ground filing fb group for more details about the angles and the gullet. facebook.com/groups/619621578626959/ Be kind,Love wins.
