I played orignial FF7 for the first time in 2023 and seriously expected the whole game to be set in Midgar, as I heard the game was described as cyberpunk. When we were leaving the city (the screen before this, at the gate, with a different song but same theme), I sat there deeply emotional for 20 minutes just listening to the melody and how beautiful and dramatic it was, how it complimented the moment of leaving in being both dramatic and kinda "opening", wide, adventurous, like the whole world is now open for you to explore. This is also the first time the main leitmotif is introduced without being altered, like in previous sections. It was actually an interestion tensions-resolution kind of thing, as the game first gives you a changed deformed melody, and only then gives the original theme that previous melodies were based off of.

Little did I know back then, I thought Midgar was the whole story. Never thought that the journey starts from that.
I was a bit disappointed with this game after playing the 2D Final Fantasy games that came before. I thought the whole game was going to be set in Midgar and thought the same as you did when I got out of Midgar

I will forever love how this song expresses a range of feelings, both optimistic and melancholy, and takes me on an emotional journey of sorts. Which isn't a stretch to say that applies to the game and its story as a whole, I think.
I agree. A larger, more comprehensive world to explore and save. And I always felt bad for Cid because he always wanted space more than life itself. Knowing the introverted, funny guy that I am, I would have ended up with Shera and made Rocket Town like NYC.

While this beautiful theme is most typically remembered as the overworld theme of FF7, it struck me as Cloud's theme instead. i will never forget the moments when this theme played during the crucial parts of Cloud's story. Even after so many years of listening to this theme for so many time, it still sends a wave of emotions everytime i listen to it

I feel the same way about ff7 music. Such great balance of tones on tracks. For me I always think of ff8 theme in balamb garden. Haven't even finished the game, but ff8 music is something special.
Theme of the World Map. Of course it will give to the many of us a nostalgic feeling.

Oh man the nostalgia for this game is so strong, hearing about it for the first time thinking it was some castlevania type game from the cover art, being mesmerised by the cgi intro, getting back from school every day excited to continue the journey, taking turns with my brother reading off a tiny play guide (it still took us 120 hours lol), the feel of my ps1 controller with a strapped on analog stick because running everywhere was so tiring, feeling devastated when Aeris dies. Take me back 🥹

I just got out of Midgar and after one of the coolest ways to end an epilogue this happens. The game opens up in the best way possible…I knew the game was much bigger than the first part of the story- but seeing the world for myself and getting to see the huge landscape ahead of me was awe inspiring. I’m loving this game and can’t wait to see more of that this game has to offer!

Final Fantasy, Halo, and The Elder Scrolls will always have the best music for video games, even with (arguably) all three franchises being past their peaks. FFVII really was the best in the genre when it came out. This music alone encapsulates the game in a nutshell; romance ending in tragedy but also hope and triumph at the end. It changed video games like The Night Gwen Stacy Died changed comics.

As a ~13 year old when this came out, it is hard to emphasize how blown my mind was that we had an entire world to roam... the story and exploration were not going to be limited to Midgar. Still gets me choked up to this day how the story only is starting to take shape at this moment. Uh-oh... sounds like I need to prep for my millionth playthrough of this perfect game. :)

One of the best moments of the original game was hearing this for the first time. It practically felt like an entirely different game. Now, with exactly that, paired with the 4 year wait (not to mention the initial wait for remake), I think we're all more than ready to leave this godforsaken city again
