Doctors make me soooo angry. As a high schooler I was diagnosed with a herniated disc and “degenerative disc disease” and given cortisone shots that did nothing. Suffered for many years and tried many chiropractors that also didn’t help. I didn’t know any better as a 17-23 year old. Exercises like this need to be tried FIRST.

@@SquatUniversity In hindsight, deadlifting and squatting with improper form taught by my high school football strength and conditioning coach was definitely what caused the low back issues. Now at age 28, after many years of lifting with proper technique, I’m now stronger than ever and mostly pain free. Even if I have low back pain now, it’s more often psoas pain or weakness, which I wasn’t even told existed at the time. And I can confidently say I don’t have degenerative disc disease haha

The exact same thing happened to me, a very sharp pain in my back. I found out thanks to KZbin that it was APT (Anterior pelvic tilt). I have been with this problem for years after physiotherapists and osteopathic physiotherapists did not find the solution. The doctor obviously only prescribed anti-inflammatory and rest. I have been 2 weeks without any pain or discomfort, training weightlifting again. You do a great job, Keep working 💪

@@elimancilla try to get into more posterior pelvic tilt. Instead of sitting, try squatting. Bring your knees to your chest too. That's a good stretch. I know someone who actually sleeps like that. I would also stretch your hamstrings in a way that doesn't stretch your low back much. If I stretch my low back it only aggravates it and makes more stiffness.

I can STRONGLY relate to this. I had practically the same injury. When Paige was describing her symptoms, it sounded exactly like me a year ago. Fortunately, I went through 7 months of therapy with an amazing PT and now I've progressed much further than I have the 2-3 years I was lifting before my injury. I did have many people (though not doctors) say I shouldn't have been lifting through it. There is always some sort of exercise we can be doing.

I stay active by walking my dogs 3 miles most days and play tennis or volleyball with family or friends for fun. I also started aqua aerobics. Most important than looks I want to be able to stay active and pain free. Lifting heavy weights was just keeping me from living an active pain free life. I’m finally accepting that. You have no idea how much I needed to hear this story today! Thank you so much! ...I have had exactly the same injury since March (or at least I found out about it 3 months ago since my neurologist says the disc bulge could have been there for a longer period of time). Plus I have a kind of net fracture of another disc also in the lower back. I was told I should never lift again because it could fracture into small pieces... I was seriously crushed by this information. I really cannot image my life without weightlifting. But then I discovered your book and thanks to you also Dr. McGill and you gave me hope that one day I could be lifting again. I didn´t workout at all for 2 months because I was told it needs like 3-4 months to heal (Do you think it´s true? Or was it a mistake to stop moving?). But I have been doing the exercises you recommend in the video for a few weeks now and I believe in the process. I´ll be seeing my physiotherapist in a few weeks. Thank you so much for all the amazing helpful videos you post! I appreciate them so much! They gave me hope and a game plan!

Pulled my back again (i think 7 times in a short amount of time over the years) last year. This pain felt different so i went to see a doctor and he told me i needed surgery! My friends who have a physio background told me to do yoga and pilates to which i replied thats stupid...arent they for girls. They told me just give it 2 weeks if the problem still continues then i can do my stupid expensive back injury. So i choose a 30 day yoga challenge and also squeezed in pilates everyday. To this day i dont have much back problems, i have proper posture and i lift better at the gym!

Excellent video (30yr trainer; 20 as CSCS)! Would LOVE to see more videos like this one. NOTE: might be good to go over proper "bracing" wuth this audience. It's been my experience that people who use lifting belts on a regular basis have very poor core control and struggle to create IAP and lumbar stability in a safe and effective manner ("belt addiction").
@DOKTORPUSZ
@DOKTORPUSZ 3 жыл бұрын
I would argue that belts aren't the problem. There are many people who use belts who know how to lift properly, and there are many people who use belts who don't know how to lift properly. Similarly, there are plenty of people who don't use belts who have no idea how to brace properly, and plenty who do. Don't blame the belts! I would however acknowledge that there any some people who believe throwing a belt on will automatically make lifting safer and reduce risk of injury which is, of course, nonsense.

Had a CT scan, Have low grade DDD (circumferential protrusion) on L4-L5 & L5-S1 and a little protrusion on S1 left side, no sciatica (just a little tingling sometime in the left pinky and cramps on left calf). I’m on medication to ease the pain (4/10) but the sessions I had with the physio (>12 times) have zero result. I’m lost …

Hi Aaron, are there any cheaper alternatives to the earthquake bar? Maybe like a DIY version, my gym doesn’t have one.

I feel like it should be a requirement for doctors to take physiotherapy courses. Cus what’s the point of doctors when a majority of them think that the patient will never be as active ever again and just prescribe a steroid shot?

Do you take any consultations remotely? I'm from India and had L5-S1 disc bulge couple of years ago. Have recovered now but still get pain and stiffness from weightlifting

Then do not lift again. At least not heavy, very light. If you are young you will heal up (no need for smart gym dude here). BUT when you past 30 years old or so, any old injury will come back worse than ever. Over 30 the body produces very little collagen and no, eating collagen won't help. So, better stop lifting heavy now to be better on long term. Just because you are able to lift heavy again doesn't mean you should. And think - you damaged your body being fully healthy by doing what you do, now it will be even worse to do what you do. Life is not about lifting heavy anyway, I wish I know it early.

@ethan payne I lift heavy until 33 years old. At 24 I had an injury that I neglected it as long I 'healed' to the point of lifting heavy again. At 33 years old it happened again in the same place. Healing again at that age was not possible anymore. I still train but not heavy - at least not for dangerous exercises. Looking back some people told me to stop but no one explained me why. Now I tell young people to stop and why and ... they still do not listen.

Squat University Do you have any guide to how to get rid of calf pain? I squat everyday high bar, the more weight the more pain i get, also get pain even with only body weight, specialy if i pause the squat. At first i had pain only on left calf, high up think it was the soleus. So i noticed that i shifted forward a bit on the buttom of the squat. So i fixed it but now i get pain on both calfs and feels like it's gastrocnemius pain. Also i feel flexibal on my calf but maybe im not.
