Another small detail that I’ve not seen posted anywhere online: In episode 2 when Jun-Ho enters In-Ho’s abandoned apartment, we can see the apartment is small and modeled exactly like the rooms the masked workers sleep in on the island - from desk location, to the bed. This shows that In-Ho more than likely became a worker after winning the games in 2015 and wanted to stay in an apartment modeled after their rooms on the island. He probably then worked his way up to become the Front Man. I also believe he is the first and only Front Man.

Some other things I have read from the other comment sections, - There’s several clues throughout the show that hint 001 is 456’s father. When 456 refuses to drink regular milk, 001 says his son hated milk too. On October 24, 001 says his son’s birthday is coming soon. 456 birthday is Oct 31. During the marble game 001 says he lived in a similar neighbourhood, 456 says so did he.The door of the house where 001 gets “killed” at is the same as 456’s mother’s house. - There was a foreshadow for player 456 as well. When he returned, he was tied up and player 67 was with him. He swore on his mother's life for player 67 to untie him then broke it. When he won the games, he returned to his mother having passed away - The 7th game was played on the 7th floor between the old man and the protagonist and unknowingly the protagonist becomes the VIP as they are betting on an innocent man's life - In the first horse race, the horse 6 won it from the horse 8 where the finalist numbers were 45(6) & 21(8)

Jaby is so hell bent on "chance" part that he is not even considering that the game is all about rich people having fun at the expense of the poors. Plus they are having fun in manipulating them by showing them money like a meat dangling infront of a hungry dog. Yes, poor were doing all the killings but the rich were putting them in such situation by taking advantage of their debt situation. That's what our protagonist thinks is wrong. That's his motive.

I completely disagree with Jaby. The game targets people who are in financial trouble and manipulates them into a death cult. None of the players are aware that only 1 player will survive. None of the players realize after the first game that they will be made to kill each other, let alone the ones they are closest to. The game systematically has players make more and more depraved decisions until they feel like they've come too far to go back, all for the sake of entertainment. They make a show of "fairness," but it's only to keep the players in the game. As soon as fairness threatens the entertainment of the elite the lights go off. The truth of the game is they kill 454 destitute people and leave 1 emotionally traumatized. Ali, Sebyeok, and Sebyeok's friend were not about to die. Maybe be arrested, but not die. They were fed a lie, manipulated, and murdered.

I think it mention somewhere that at the end of the game and if you choose to give up, the money will go to the dead one. So it can change you in a good way. That what Chang-Woo said just after killing Sae-Byeok. He said something: If you both survive until the last round, you both will give up and you won't get the money but goes to the family of the dead one. So you can still win the game as a good person without money.

I dont necessarily agree with Jaby but I dont completely agree with you either. Firstly, the creators of game would target people who are financially unstable because the game entices you with a cash prize....even with the game in the subway the participants earned quite a bit of money and it was to show the player that if he/she comes to play the game then the amount of money up for grabs is huge. No person who is financially sound would wanna join the game simply because his/her life doesnt push him/her to do so, he/she is living a comfortable life, they are not in a desperate need of money. Secondly, in all fairness how do the participants know that the game in the later stages would require you make close bonds with certain people, it never stated that you HAVE to get close to someone it was all done willingly by the participants on their own accord. Thirdly, the "fairness" spoken about is for the all contestants individually amongst themselves. There was no violation of this fairness when the lights were turned off, that man who could spot the difference between the glass slabs had an advantage over the other contestants in that round and switching off the lights eliminated that very advantage. In the first round,, yes ill give it to you that the people didnt know what they were getting into but what Oh-Il Nam said is right, all people who came back in the subsequent rounds did it because they chose to, no one forced them to. Lastly, no one was lied to because everything the game promised they would give they obliged. No one was manipulated either as none of the soldiers interfered with the decisions the contestants made and stood by what the majority of contestants decided. Also, i do agree everyone in the first round was murdered but people in the subsequent rounds in a way did sign up for a very vague form of suicide. I hope I dont offend anyone with this. These were just my opinions about the show. Also I dont support the game im just making an argument.

It is rather entertaining to see Jaby so puzzled over Gi-hun's rage against the game. I think there is no question that Gi-hun was sincerely and reasonably traumatized over the experience, even with the prize money. There is also no question that the design of the game is sinister in its approach to prey on the desperation of the people. As much one could rationalize the all the participant's fate would be pre-ordained as an early death had they chosen not to participate because of the setup of the plot, in reality, I suspect that, although life could be unforgivingly harsh not to return to the game, some of them might actually have the chance to crawl out the misery and live a worthy life with the remainder of their time. The absolute death for many but one deprive them the opportunity. Even the survivor gets out with a damaged soul that cannot be made whole. Is winning worth it? That's a question we need to ask ourselves. Once in, however, wining and surviving is no doubt the better alternative. Gi-hun instinctively knows the malicious nature even as a beneficiary of the game's outcome. Gi-hun is not saint. He is but an ordinary, unmotivated person who was beat down by failures in life. I don't expect him to have the ambition to save the poor or the vision to rid the evil from the world. However, I can quickly accept his fury for the unrelenting brutality and indignation the game imposed on him. Let's see what S2 will address it. Hopefully as satisfying as S1. As for free will, If free will rules supreme, then what do we say to all the laws intended to plug the leaking holes that allow harmful acts like drug, gambling, or even gladiator-like activities under the banner of free will. As a society, there would be expectation on what is extreme and unacceptable. One would think most of us would prefer something more dignified than blood sport, even when we may not be able to prevent it completely. Squid Game became viral not just because of acting or production quality. It became so popular certainly it touched on a societal nerve that resonates with its audience. This is when we see the magic of performing art.

I felt like Gi-huns motivation was being compared to the horses. It was their choice to go back in but it was the fact that there are people betting and watching the games and making a sport out of people's deaths, deaths that hit Gi-hun really hard. Like the deaths were their choice but ultimately didn't mean anything to those in charge.

Precisely. To the rich people, the player's struggles and even their lives were nothing more than a Saturday night's entertainment. I dont know if anyone already notice this. The symbol they used throughout this series is actually a shape from the squid game too. The Square is the biggest, means the worker with square mask is their superior. The worker with triangle is the second big shape in the squid game, also the one with guns they were like in the middle, a guards. And the circle is the smallest shape in squid game, is the lowest worker. And one thing I realize is that Gi Hun character, when he is outside, he almost always unlucky, but if its about his daughter, he became lucky. Like the debit card pin, is his daughter birthday. When he gamble with the horses, he' ls unlucky. But again, he won with his daughter birthday too. But end up the money got picked by Se Byeok and loan shark chase him. But when he play the claw game, because he want to give it to his daughter a present, again he is lucky that random kid help him. And throughout the game, he is using his daughter lucky birth date number, which is 456 - 0456 is her daughter birthday. And throughout the game, there is always someone who help him to get through. Except when he wear the old man jacket at the marbles game. He actually lose to the old man. Because he dont have his lucky number. The old man jacket is 001. So, hey let me know what you think. In the honeycomb game, Ilnam's only choice was either the star or the umbrella because they already agreed beforehand that they would pick one of each after Sangwoo suggested that they take one of each shape instead of picking one and staying together. Sangwoo was quick to claim the triangle, then they asked Ali and he picked the circle, then it's only 2 choices left for Ilnam and Gihun. Though he could have also gone against Sangwoo's suggestion and insist they all pick triangle but he'd have to explain himsef so there must be that..

IMO Gi-hun hates how the game toys with people's desperation for their entertainment. It's more about DIGNITY. We saw this trait of his earlier in ddakji game where Gi-hun was offended after being slapped that he genuinely forgot about the money, he just wanted to win and get back at the guy. But that was on a much lower scale, in which he decided he could give up one revenge slap for that money. I think the old guy cried out for the riot in the night to stop, because he underestimated how savage it ended up being and he actually said what he believed, which is that everybody would end up just killing each other. But not because he felt sorry for them, but because there would be no contestant left for the game. The point was to only give them scarce food to ignite "a fight". But what they got was a massacre. It could also have always been the old guy's aim to simply decide when enough was enough.

Another thing from episode 2 that I haven't seen anyone else say relates to when Il-Nam and Gi-Hun meet up before returning to the game. Kihoon's backstory, his work place, Dragon motors and blue color workers protest against merciless owner, and one of his best colleagues' death during that turmoil, he previously got traumatized before he join in the game. As critics also referred about it, this is based on actual incident happened recently in S.K. Ssang-yong (literally Double Dragon) Motors employees protest against the owner's decision to lay-off. So many employee's brutally quelled in the process and some committed suicide later. He got actually double -traumatized after all.

During Marbles, Ji-yeong calms down Sae-byeok by getting her to agree to delay their marble game until the last minute, as the outcome would be the same, and it would give them time to speak. During this conversation, they share their backstories with one another, and Ji-yeong mentions the famous actor Lee Byung-hun (StormShadow). While this can be dismissed as just a random pop culture reference, no other famous figure is referenced throughout the show. Moreover, the best K-dramas are known for using famous faces for cameo roles, such as how Squid Game’s recruiter, The Salesman, is played by Gong Yoo of Train to Busan, Coffee Prince, and Goblin. In addition, while Lee Byung-hun is listed in the official cast, he hasn’t made an appearance prior to the mention of his name in the series, suggesting that he could be one of the faces behind the Squid Game masks.

I agree/disagree with Jaby in his last point. On the surface, Gi-hun's decision to shut down the game operations is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. That's the beauty of episode 2. Maybe Gi-hun focused his efforts on fighting the system that allows such social and financial disparities. But yeah, the games are an allegory for this very topic so it's kinda like that's what he's doing.

New to the channel and really enjoying the reactions. Keep up the good work! @Jaby, regarding your questions as to why Gi-Hun held such animosity toward the game, I think the point the show is presenting through Gi-Hun's point of view is that, notwithstanding that participation in the games was voluntary, and was thus a choice made with free will, that free will was manipulated by presenting an inherently immoral choice. I think one of the show's main themes is forcing the audience (through the characters) to grapple with the question of whether it is truly free will or whether it is truly a moral choice. When Gi-Hun and others choose to return to the game in ep. 2, I think they are, in a sense, seeming to agree with Il-Nam and those running the game that the answer is "yes." I think his experiences and where his character falls by the end of the show personify the opposite answer. And we, the viewers, are left to debate which side makes the most sense in circumstances where, as portrayed in episode 2, real life is best described as "hell," but the alternative is perhaps even more hellish.

I think the one thing that bothers me about all of these speculation videos about squid game is the fact that they don’t touch on the theory that the old man was the lender of all of those peoples money. That’s how they knew who you are and where you were and what your birthday was and how much money you owed. Sang-woo (dunno if right spelling) said that they only knew about a portion of his debt, which suggests that he took out money from multiple lenders, hence the gap in info. Also Il-nam literally tells Gi-Hun that he makes his money lending it to others. Ahhh they made me cry over that old maaaan. Man I was pissed.

I would argue slightly about his life being better because of the game, sure he got super rich and can potentially win his daughter back but in doing so he wasn't there for his mom who died while he was playing these death games, she never knew why her son just up and disappeared other than he probably got murdered by debt collectors.

I think the reason behind Gi-Hun's anger was the method Game provides. Hear me out. There are people who provide money to other poor people for smuggling drugs and to kill or abduct. While the people who do it, do it on account of their own accord it is still wrong. It's taking advantage of someone's vulnerability. I agree the protagonist doesn't have anything alternative to this but place yourself into his shoes. His whole life is destroyed. His Mom, his friends are all gone. His soul which was a joyful one was tarnished and he saw good people like his friend turn Evil all influenced by Money which was lured by this organization. Look at shows like caught at the airport where people get busted for carrying drugs. They regret this and confess they all did this for money and how people took advantage of their vulnerability. This is what Gi-Hun is going to destroy. Maybe he will come up with an alternative to this in the process.

There is so much clue that foreshadows that, Gi-hun is the old man's son. 1. The neighbourhood they play marbles, Gihun also states his childhood neighbourhood was also similar to this place. 2. The old man wanted to play the games with his son but only watched all these times. This time he played with GI hun. 3. Gi hun hates milk and asks for chocolate milk. The old man says you must have got beatings from your parents. Gi hun questions how did he know and the old man replies, My son hates milk too and I used to beat him for this. 4. Gi hun's bday is 26th april ( for the atm pin, he puts 0426 and states it as his bday) and the old man during marble asks if it's 24th today and says my son's bday is coming up, I need to get him a gift. 5. This game was secretly pushing Gi hun to win, because the old man wanted his son to win and take it over. He died before explaining. That is why he passes the 001 to Gi hun. And Gi hun's number is the last number because the 1st no and last no 456 is distinct and easy to identify by others. 6. He was also explaining that playing with Gi hun brought so many old memories back and died before finishing what he was saying. 7. The big one: Gi hun's mom's name in her debit card is 'OH' mal soon. And the old man's name is 'OH' Il Nam. Her first name is same as the old man's name.j

Some people think too much. The sensor also didn't color the one croucing next to Il-Nam in the first game. It's just vignette effect of the lens. Also, yes they went back willingly but they all thought rest of the games would be like the first game. So if they play well, there could be multiple winners. They never said there would be only one winner. They just designed the games so there would be only one winner. If they all knew there would be only one winner, many more would not have returned.

I think Gi Hun's motivation as to end the game once and for all is to stop the killing of people for the entertainment of a few wealthy people altogether. I get that Jaby is trying to say that the game provides alternative to people who seem like they have no hope at life anymore, but Gi Hun doesn't have to provide another alternative to all those potential players. He's just a character who sees the killing as morally wrong. And he sees the fact that people are being used as "horses" in a horseracing betting game like Squid Game as morally wrong. Gi Hun isn't going to end capitalism nor the problems of debt. If for example, instead of the game involving people risking their lives in order to get money, it's a game involving people getting mutilated or sexually exploited for the pleasure of some sick rich men, would it not make sense to stop the game from occurring again because it's still ethically wrong? Those people who enter the games are all manipulated into thinking that they have a fair chance, when they don't. Even as audiences, we're unsure of whether more than one people can walk away with the price money until the latter stages, just like the contestants. I don't understand Jaby's gripe with Gi Hun's motivation to simply end the game, because to me, the game is horrifying enough such that nobody should have to go through that even if they volunteered, because nobody who volunteered knew the extent of how horrible the games would carry on, despite witnessing the first game. Gi Hun was one of them. He thought the risk was worth it. But he saw it with his own eyes how inhumanely horrible the games escalated till the very end. And even when he won it all, he walked out of it more empty and traumatised than ever before. He doesn't want to wish it for anyone else. That to me, seems like a powerful enough motivation to want to simply end the Squid Games altogether.

Gi Hun's rage and him standing up to the game is him regaining agency. Something he didn't have when he entered the game, even moreso the 2nd time. It happens too often in our society, that people in vulnerable positions "willingly" sign up for these shitty opportunities. Instead of compassion and guidance for such desperate individuals, our society is full of squid games to take full advantage of them. And I feel this show is an allegory of that reality

You need to do another of hints from the writer/director with foreshadowing --> 1. opening child game reveals the end 2. "I am not a horse, I'm a person - horse game 6(Ki hoon) moves ahead of 8 at the end, 7(see byuk) falls out at the end, 8 (sang woo) loses though he was much ahead the whole time 3. Duk su's death - initially falls off bridge to save himself, but he dies falling off a bridge, Sae byuk's death is reinforced by how she threatened her broker with a knife to his throat and she gets sliced in the neck, Ali steals from his boss but ends up getting his marbles stolen by Sang-woo, Sang woo tries to commit suicide at first but he really does at the end of the game, the present that Kihoon gave his daughter foreshadows the death in the games as he box is black wrapped in a bow tie, the inner wrapping is pink and the gun is a lighter showing the cremation of the bodies after they die in the game.

The foreshadowing was the biggest surprise to me, followed by the games on the wall. The flaw with "Everyone chose to come back" made that decision under duress and most importantly *unaware that other competitors could kill them outside the game, in their sleep.* There is no justification. Justification is what Il-nam used to try and not feel guilty about all the murder. The type of duress the players were under I'd argue is the same type of duress people go through when they plead guilty to crimes they never committed because police manipulation.

I feel Gi Hun also had a shift in his view about the game the further it went, too. He joined to win (part of) the prize, like every other contestant. But due to the bonds he made, by the end he would have been willing to give up the prize and vote to leave the game with Sae Byeok, if it meant saving her life, which was why Sang Woo killed her. And of course at the very end, he wanted Sang Woo to leave the game with him too. The contestants didn't go in knowing there would only be one winner. Otherwise that husband and wife couple wouldn't have joined together. Based on Round 1, everyone had a chance. Either way I feel like the way it all turned out helped Gi Hun realize how beyond depraved the whole game is, including that it is all gambling for the sick rich people. I also disagree that Gi Hun is better off after winning the game. He helped out Sae Byeok's brother, and Sang Woo's mom, but he himself is forever traumatized. There are things worse than death.

I feel like the reason Il-nam called for the fighting to end after he orchestrated it was because either: 1) too many were dieing and it would mean that the next game (tug of war that needs a fair few players) wouldnt work properly Or 2) it was getting too hard to avoid. Il-nam wanted to have fun with the games. He as inventor doesn`t mind people dying, but he wants them to die during the games and not during what is probably an unscheduled brawl. It is not "fair" as in a brawl he most violent/aggressive/physical ones just kill weaker people while during the game the odds are much are even. The ones watching find joy not just in death, but in death during the games. Else they would just have the players kill each other in a giant brawl

When Oh Il-Nam (001) cries out in the flashy murder brawl I took it as him shouting to the other players. That would change after the pee pants incident because I did catch the bottle of water being there and I thought it was very strange that he even had a bottle of water because they didn't show anyone else with that bottle, I don't even remember food scene for that night. That sus water bottle made me think back to see if I could thinking of anything strange and the way he was standing on the beds and the way the camera focused on him makes me thing he was counting heads as if too many were surviving and "stop the madness" was actually him shouting "mission accomplished". Also we don't see our boy Ali die, the circumstance of his death and his death both Mirror that of Oh Il-Nam (001), they both got cheated, the camera cuts before the shot and it cuts to the facial reaction of the person that cheated them.

There is also another deep theory I read somewhere that Il Naam is father of Gi Hun. In his dying moments he lured him into this game to straighten him out. Maybe he was watching him all his life. This theory is a stretch but its backed by 1. we never see Gi hun's father's picture in his house or anywhere. 2. When Gi Hun asks for chocolate milk, Il Nam chuckles and says his son was fond of chocolate milk too. 3. He gives fatherly advice and lives his dream of playing all the games with his son and also helps him win the marbles game. 4. In his dying moments he arranges meeting with him and no other person. The frontman only comes when he dies because he is like a second son to him. Like I said, its a stretch but this theory can easily be weaved into season 2 as another twist.

Clue from the first ep, horse racing: Horse No.6 and 8 wons. Gi-Hun 45'6', Sang-Woo 21'8'. Horse No.7 was leading the game but finally passed by No.8. Sae-Byeok 6'7', killed by Sang-Woo 21'8'. Crazy.

Jaby, i appreciate you! Here's my take on your confusion on Gi-Hun's "i must destroy the game" motives. I would vaguely compare it to how you felt about Sang Woo killing Sae Byeok. She was already dying and he went and slit her throat anyway and we all know that was needlessly cruel. The debate of whether she could have been saved or if he was putting her out of her misery aside. She was going to die either way, but Sang Woo slitting her throat made it that much more of a negative. And i think that's kinda how Gi-Hun sees Society (bad) and The Game (more bad). Gi-Hun's animosity towards the game comes from his trauma. That's kinda the thing with trauma, and emotions in general, is that they aren't always fully logical. Gi-Hun isn't thinking about what to replace the game with to better society. To him all he sees in a blind vengeful rage is "the game has to stop because of what it made me and the other players do to each other" because it's sick and it's twisted, regardless of the fact that people after the first game chose to go back to it. I think to him it's more so about stopping the VIPs and game creators from treating people like horses and getting pleasure from it, and less about stopping new players from playing the game. He feels violated that the game took advantage of his and other players misfortune to pressure them to "choose" (under situational duress) to do something that in a more humane society they wouldn't have had nor chose to do. And the players were all forced to do it directly to each other with higher and more instant consequences than real life usually has. Obviously there's still the problem of capitalist society even after the game is destroyed, but to Gi-Hun, that's still a step below what the game does to people. Society is evil but it's the lesser of the two evils to him in my opinion. Society being how it is is already awful, the game working the way it does is just that much worse. The Game is society turned up to 11. And he knows he can't single handedly fix society, but he does think he could stop the game.
