This episode is so devastatingly amazing. Nothing impresses me more than the writing and acting behind the scenes with Sae-Byeok and Ji-yeong. Especially the latter, who was only introduced halfway through the fourth episode; Ji-yeong's character resonates so incredibly well despite being a character that is hardly prevalent. Her backstory is beyond saddening - to see and hear from someone who practically felt dead already, who believes that they have absolutely nothing left to live for, hurts so damn much. And then for her to finally find a brief glimmer of happiness in a bond with Sae-Byeok (whose actress did an incredible job despite it being only her first ever role) and to feel some form of peace by protecting this rare friendship that she has grown...only to end with that upheld composure, tears streaming down her face but a wide smile, as the gun is slowly raised to her head. Those scenes are masterclass examples of writing and directing. They make you feel deeply connected for a character that you hardly even know; very similar to how Ji-yeong grew to care for a person who she had previously known little about. Going forward, scenes with Sae-Byeok will feel heavier with the weight of Ji-yeong's sacrifice to her partner and friend.

The girls were a point of bright light in all this darkness. And remember: both were technically the “criminals”.
@lizs38253 жыл бұрын
I think you touched on it perfectly: a brief glimmer. In the English CC subs, her last line is “I’m honored we were partners.” In English subs, its “Thank you for playing with me.” And I think the latter hits home a bit more as we learn her backstory- that her childhood was fcked up. Going from an abusive childhood to correctional facilities, there’s not a lot of “playtime” in there. So when she says “thank you for playing with me”, it makes me feel like we see a glimmer of child-JY. I’ve seen other reactors say something like “one of you is dying- HELLO!” when JY (twice) forgets that her & SB won’t be making it out alive, together. But it’s important to keep in mind that she just said she went from prison to Squid Game. As far as she’s concerned, there’s not much of a difference between the two in the “interim”. So saying something like “when we get out, I’ll show you how to splurge/spend” feels natural to her.
@stdevote033 жыл бұрын
It’s super messed up the game recruiter got to JiYong straight outta prison. Trauma councillors and therapists should be the first to meet her. It’s not just indebted people they rope in to play so the game is actually crooked, being “fair & equal” is BS.

Ji-yeong is my favorite character of the show and this is my favorite comment I’ve seen about her. So very well said. The fact that this young girl had her innocence TAKEN from her and she went to prison for it and emerged this hollow shell tugged my heart to my toes…and then when she’s talking to Sae and you see her light up at the thought of having fun and sharing moments together…only to remember that they won’t be able to…yeah, I was a mess.

My Dad told me and my Sister (both of his girls) that men are told crying is seen as a form of weakness, but he said he believes girls should be taught the same. So we were taught that, his logic for teaching us this was most men view females as over emotional anyway so crying makes it easier for them to dismiss you or what you're saying as irrational emotions. Sorry, I went on a tangent there your comment regressed me for a moment 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ I also like to see people who are able to express their feelings freely, but it does hit me hard when I see a man cry, (maybe it's because how I was raised) but it just hits different.

This episode is for me the most powerful of the show. It is a scenario of simple horror, constant tension and pure emotion. Every performance hits and the direction keeps it focused where it should. The first episode may have spectacle but this.... The games are psychologically genius btw. The first 2 are shocking but solitary affairs. The third is a team game that builds bonds and has your guys succeed together, against other players no less. And then this one. They KNOW you will choose someone you trust. A Friend. The KNOW it.
@Spiffiness033 жыл бұрын
So true! And it's one thing that bugs me about the whole concept. In the beginning as they're setting it all up, it's all about how it's fair and anyone can win. And it seems implied that there can be multiple winners - at no point does anyone think "I have to be the only one left" - but because of how the games are set up, it's impossible for more than a handful of people to win - if even more than one. So is it REALLY fair? Do they REALLY have equal chances? lol that's my two cents
@neodigremo3 жыл бұрын
@@Spiffiness03 I think that is a part of the point of the games. Consider what they do in the next one when someone has a completely legitimate advantage. Or how they manipulate the people to stoke tensions and rioting. The whole thing is very calculated. But there is nothing to suggest there cannot be multiple winners. And in any given game you as an individual do seem to have a fair shot. Well, as fair as anyone does. The whole thing is doing that deliberately as a critique. You can get so far on your own, then you need to get help to go further. And then at the end you must betray someone close to you/fight to come out on top. Everyone has a fair shot, but not "everyone" can come out on top

Just to add a little more context to Ali. You may have noticed that he was calling Sang woo "hyung" and not his name or ajjassi. this is a word used by Korean males here to address another male older than them who they are close to. Hyung literally means “older brother” in Episode 2, Sang woo told him he could call him that.
@AlphaOmega-xh7fy3 жыл бұрын
That’s why Ali’s “stupidity” isn’t stupid at all. He was following someone HE TRUSTED through previous interactions and who allowed to be called “hyung”. Sang woo was one of the very few people who treated him with respect.

Adam and Jay, there is a reason why I watch so few other reactors on KZbin, and this reaction is exactly why. There are so few reactors I find who are as open and honest and raw with their emotions as you two are. When I watch you react, I feel like I'm really watching it with you. Thanks for bringing such great honest content. May your friendship last a thousand lifetimes.

The understated part of this episode is how well it treats background characters. Particularly 069 and 070 (the married couple). They werent given attention in red light, green light. In honeycomb game they get no screen time, but if you pay very close attention you hear the announcer saying "Player 069 pass, player 070 pass" in immediate succession (meaning whoever finished first waited for the other to finish before turning in the cookie). Then you get tug-of-war, where the husband refuses to join a team if his wife cant also be a member. Then it just ends here.

I will say compared to other youtube channels, pReviewed is THE place I go for great guys giving honest emotions. I cried with them to the trailer for "Won't You Be My Neighbor." I cried with them in the Mandalorian, and now I've cried with them in Squid Game. I'm sure there are numerous other videos as well. These guys are so great and so consistently brave to be vulnerable to literally thousands of people!

I was really ugly cry laughing when I watched episode 6. Crying for the obvious reasons and laughing because even if I liked the first 5 episodes and liked the characters, I wasnt THAT invested in them but this episode made me feel so much for them, that I was just laughing haha It#s so nice to see both of them being that invested, that's pretty cool and even if I feel exactly the same and have a tear in my eyes again, I must say ... that Adam's cried "I'm not good" was simply hilarious and I laughed way too loud. Thanks for that, I love both of you

I watched so many Squid Games reactions and always shed a tear when revisiting this episode. It is an absolute masterclass of getting the audience to care even deeper about these characters. I felt Ali’s heartbreak. I felt Gi-Hun’s inner turmoil. I felt Ji-Yeong’s acceptance of her fate and finally finding someone to relate to. Mannn, it was just so beautifully sad.
