Slight incorrect statement. They said Gi-Hun thinks they got there because of other people helped them (not sacrifices). And Sang-Woo thinks he got there because he was smart, clever and ruthless. This is important because these two characters are about people struggling to be who they want to be. Both men are wrong. Sang-Woo needed to basically cheat and betray the helpful rich man he wants to be. And Gi-Hun ends up needing to take action. Both men break by doing so.

@@ewanholme1687 that's pretty much the point of the character. Selfless, ruthless arrogant twat. But the original comment was right. It is kinda realistic the route he is taking. She was suffering while bleeding out and dying. I look at his actions as if you are putting down a lame horse or a house pet that is in agony and needs to have it end. Then again, I also see what Sang-Woo and his violent moves in a game of literal life or death are exactly how most people would react. Even the ones claiming they wouldn't. The game is legit about your own life or someone else's, and I do have empathy for the ones who died due to Sang-Woo and his actions, yet it was do or die.

@sarah4hp3 жыл бұрын
I think that falls flat when you recognize that this is fiction, and the VIP's are enjoying watching the killings irl, and live too, while most of us enjoy the characters backstories, and what happens between the games etc. - in short the things the VIP's wouldn't care about at all as they can't even be bothered to read about that. So while I keep seeing people comment this. and try to present it as this deep and meaningful thing, I just can't buy into that premise at all. With Sae Byeok it is the fact that I cared about her, and that it breaks my heart how she was betrayed by someone she just saved by stopping him from being killed in his sleep, and that she will never be reunited with her mom and her brother, or get to see that island that gets me. The VIP didn't get upset number 69 hung himself because he cared that he had just lost his wife, or about potential kids on the outside etc., merely because he had bet 1 million dollars on him and had now lost that money. That is also a pretty HUGE difference. I cared more about a fictional character dying in a TV-show I was watching than they do about real life human beings in THEIR world. So no, we are NOT "VIP's" at all.

my theory is the frontman was a cop, hence he knew a lot about police procedural (besides having a cop bro also). 2 things then come to mind: either he's still a cop deep deep undercover(could be cool, but highly unlikely since the game observes all and sees all)..OR.. he was a cop heavy in debt just like the rest and got pulled into the game. and if he had won, that means he would have killed his competitors, and having tasted such power over people, perhaps he wanted more. The oldman saw this, recognized his potential n manipulated him to serve. and the rest happened just like to that jedi apprentice long ago, in a galaxy far away.

Adam pretty much nailed it on the review. The reason we care so much about the characters is - in his essence and equal to all - the fact that all of them have financial problems, which is something everybody understands (some more, some less). But we all know how it works or know someone that is going through it. Also the backstories, character development and arcs are well done, they are not two-dimensional characters waiting to die. They all have, even the ones we barely knew, something that makes us connect (obviously the ones we got to see more then just a few scenes). One example is the couple. We barely saw them in one or two episodes and we understand their struggle, why the husband committed suicide and how twisted the situation is. Also, we all understand the corruption of money and how people change when millions are on the line. It happens in real life, so many bosses just don't care if their employees have enough to eat, as long as they get a big house and a bunch of Ferraris. Or how many stories we read or listen about that one family member that won the lottery and ran away with all the money. Or in my personal experience, a friend of my uncle that was left bankrupt after his father passed away and his uncle ran with all the money his father made on a factory they ran together. So like Adam said, we all understand the situation and the layers they put on top of that makes us be super-engaged. Jay was extra mad with Sang-Woo killing Sae-Byeok because she already had the sacrifice from Ji-Yeong so she could help her brother and mother. All of that dream went down the drain because of Sang-Woo... Because we as viewers care about those dreams too and the unfairness of the situation boils our blood. Especially after what he did to Ali.

When they showed her with the huge glass I immediately thought of Stewie when he was like "Do I take it out or leave it in?! Take it out or leave it in??!" with the huge shard of glass in his head

Sung-Woo succeeds, not by winning himself but by making the other people losers. Fitting for someone who had a career in high profile business.

Episode 9 is going to give you heartburn. It’s the icing on the cake that wasn’t served for dessert.

This whole show is a commentary on society… how the massively rich look down on people who are “poor” or in major financial debt and gaslight everyone to blame them for getting themselves into such debt, all while the VIPs are sitting there watching and laughing as people destroy each other just to survive. Funnily enough the people playing squid game have more humanity than those wealthy elite who are betting on them and making fun of them. The world is literally one big squid game.

"Take me to the moon" is a gambling expression, take the person suddenly to the highest highs, hence "fly me to the moon"

I still find it weird that this show became so mainstream popular. I’m a big KDrama fan, especially their thrillers, and now everyone is suddenly into something I’ve known was good for ages. It’s like “Yeah it’s good, where you all been?”

I really appreciate Jay taking my advice and dropping "full" from his "edited reaction" part of the patreon promo. Thank you Jay! And you forgot trifle in the dessert list. Yum Yum!

Nothing in Squid Game is fully original, but it's also so unique at the same time because of it's aesthetic and presentation.

Interesting thing about the Frontman is that he used to be a cop/detective just like his younger brother Jun-Ho. There was a profile on him in Korean when the detective was looking for his brother's info in the file room. I wonder how the Frontman ended up there...

What is messed up is that if Sae Byeok had let Gi Hun kill Sang Woo like he planned, and he was successful, then Gi Hun would have automatically become the winner and Squid Game would have ended before the final game. Sae Byeok was already mortally wounded so she would have died anyways which meant Gi Hun wouldn't have to kill her (I think if he did it would scar him for life) or they could have voted to end the game and get her medical treatment. They could have literally ended Squid Game on day 5. I doubt the pink men/black mask would step in to treat her and keep her alive for the final game if it were down to her and Gi Hun. For anyone who didn't know, Black Mask guy is Lee Byung Hun who played Storm Shadow in the GI Joe movies with Channing Tatum and he was also in Red 2 (Bruce Willis). I got so happy after the reveal because he is one of my favorite Korean actors. This cameo and Gong Yoo's (episode one with the Ddakji/slapping game) is what made this show top tier for me.

18:46, By not enjoying desserts, Korean's stay healthy and thin, for the most part and relatively speaking, ofc. Also, if you know anything about SK, meals are more of a sustenance than an enjoyment. That's why the small sized meals within the games. If you think about it, in this version of the Squid Game, no one was really big.

When the detective is on the phone and his boss says "what did you do" it always sat a bit off with me. I think the police (at least the higher ups) knew of the Squid Games.

Adam sitting back and just letting Jay unwind on both the meta perspective, and the desserts listing was hilarious. Just sit back and thinking "Dems the good content"
