The bigger point on "Squid Game" and it popularity is how the Korean Wave has taken the world by storm. After watch tons of Korean dramas or Kdramas and movies online I have to say that S Korea really knows how to produce some really good tv series and movies that in my view beat out Hollywood.

@James Henry Smith lol how many of these 'good shows' produced in Thailand or China has been adopted from Korean Content? Even Japanese dramas/movies have been adopting Korean originals. The original comment talks about how much influence Korean entertainment has over the world now. It's not ignoring or downplaying other countries' entertainment.

It’s everything coming together, the topic, the timing, the script, the directing… the audience. For those who thinks they are smarter for not watching it, they can’t be smart people at all. Openness is the first trait of intelligence, if something’s breaking records and making history, smart people tend to try to understand it, on the other hand, people who are close minded would try to diminish changes cuz they are less adaptive to new rules and environments.

the thing is, if you lose the game of capitalism, it *can* kill you. For instance, in the US, lots of people die because they can't afford healthcare. Poorer people don't live as long as wealthier people. And their lives can be lived in constant misery. So the real difference is that you're not directly murdered - but the system itself is definitely deadly. I also love the challenge with the glass-plate bridge. It's a great metaphor for life. For instance, investing in the stock market. you never know which choice may make you rich or bankrupt you.

South Korea is a perfect country. I used to live in Seoul for a while. BUT I don't like this game. And of course, I don't support strict COVID lockdowns and so many COVID restrictions in South Korea and around the globe. Fortunately, here in the Netherlands it's almost absolutely lifted.

Squid Game was inspired by Japan's Battle Royale (comic and live action movie where school kids have to kill each other on an island that has great b-movie appeal) and Japan's Kaiji (comic, anime and movie franchise where a gambler with impulse control ends up in a casino where they have to play these games to pay their debts). The glass bridge came was inspired from a game in Kaiji where it was more dramatic and gut wrenching. There's other shows like Alice in Borderland (Korean), Liar Game (Japanese and Korean versions) & At God's Will (Japanese) are all similar.
