And the fact they got accepted by netflix and now it's the biggest show in the world. It's a very similar parallel with bts. They kept getting downplayed by korean media until they made it big internationally and then they're suddenly korea's pride.

Kaiji, Liar Game, Battle Royal or similar genre known as Death Game. Mostly Japanese mangas but they made the games easier as children plays and put some 70, 80s Korean culture into it. Making it universial and unique at the same time.

I think reason 6 should be at the very top. And it is not underlying, it is the drive force and very much in your face. Characters are facing violent premature death in order to pay debts and provide a less harsh living to close ones. We are in a crisis period. And before that wealth gap already was a growing concern. Followed by all above mentioned reasons, of course, sets, acting, music etc.

@@droiddevx03 You must realize no one has originality these days. Nothing is new under the sun anymore. Every one copies from one another but each gives his own tweak into it. The Koreans do things better in this regard. I watched Alice in Wonderland and is nowhere as gripping as Squid Game. You don't have to sound salty about it.
@KANGMinCherry
@KANGMinCherry 3 жыл бұрын
@@droiddevx03 Why do people compare Squid Game with other death games? Squid game's reason is not a Random, Mysterious Game that people ACCIDENTALLY FELL INTO... It's a game that you choose, with a relatable reason : you are poor and in dept, each character has their own real-alike story. Alice in Borderland? I enjoyed it, but I've never thought a second about "What will I do or select in that situation?" It felt like just watching a show... no more / no less. Squid Game is not famous because it's a death game. It's because it's a very RELATABLE Death game, unlike the series you mentioned.

To be honest, your comment doesn't make sense on multiple levels- at no point does the show really present a criticism of the education system. In fact, Korea's schooling system is rather good compared to most western nations. Also, capitalist policies in America atm are widely anti-intellectual. I don’t like K-dramas that much anymore. Korean thrillers and actions are so much better and will cater to both genders (especially male) unlike the usual Kdrama love stories. Have watched several shows like Train to Busan, Kingdom, Sweethome which are good. I would say it was a good thing that K-industry is focusing on thriller/actions since their cinematography is really good and they better do cause not all girls like me likes the usual korean love dramas lol and what more with the guys. They are now gaining both audience categories because of their current shift and they are doing really well is all I can say.

The show didn’t invent the dystopian survival action horror genre but it didn’t need to and just pulls it off well. The ultra violence is for the mouth breather audience but the brilliance of the show are the many references to Korean social problems today - household debt time bomb, migrant worker exploitation. And of course, how far we’re willing to bend morals in the face or death or money.

It's a game that you choose, with a relatable reason : you are poor and in dept, each character has their own real-alike story. Battle Royale? Escape Room? Alice in Borderland? I enjoyed them, but I've never thought a second about "What will I do or select in that situation?" It felt like just watching a show... no more / no less. Korean shows are FINALLY getting the recognition they deserve. They were already dominating Asian markets. The biggest reason it didn't carry over to the West was because people here were too lazy to read subtitles. How silly is that. Well now hopefully this show made people realize that non English shows are great. Korean shows aren't all melodramas either, as some ignorant folks here are trying to suggest. There are so many gems like Kingdom, KAIROS, My Mister (yes this one is not about romance, but about family and becoming an adult), Signal and many more. Check them out guys. Won't be disappointed.

I knew Squid Game would be a top hit on Netflix the second I saw the trailer. Japanese and Koreans simply understand the type of things that pique the human interest and keep you engaged while Hollywood still doesn't get it and is busy making boring superhero movies, slice of life comedy, or generic action movies that nobody cares about. Western movies and series invest way too much time and budget on graphics and action and never enough on storyline/storytelling, characters, suspense/anticipation, and emotional engagement. Watch any Korean drama and you'll see that Koreans are the absolute masters at this. It reminds me of when I saw the movie Captain Marvel. I remember how utterly bored I was because here's a character that's all of a sudden the strongest being in the universe decimating planets and spaceships, blasting laser beams and sh*t, and I just couldn't care less about any of it. Had no emotional investment in the character and couldn't wait for it to be over despite the impressive CGI and theatrics. Contrast that with the Korean series "Reply 1988" which is slow paced, has zero CGI, but takes you on a roller coaster of emotions and puts you in the shoes of the characters the entire time so that you begin to laugh when they laugh and cry when they cry. Sorry if this sounds rude, but Hollywood is just amateur in comparison.

I grew up and lived in both Korea and the US in a bilingual and bicultural home speaking fluent Korean and English. The twitter thread trashing the subtitles is COMPLETELY OVERBLOWN. If anything, I doubt the English language competency of those being overly critical bc the translations by Netflix don’t just translate literally which is almost always the problem with subtitles. Netflix translators actually seemed to take into account the cultural elements and expressions which actually would either make no sense or be too awkward when literal translations are used.

I watch a lot of Asian dramas (Korean, Japanese, Thai) sometimes without great subtitles because they are being subbed by volunteers/fans . You always get the story. Thanks to all those who freely sub dramas for the rest of us.

As a Korean the reason it is so popular... We are not that far from Characters. If we make some mistakes down the road, we could be one of them anytime. That's why we like the characters. They could be us anytime.

Thank God this decade we have shows like Bridgerton and Squid Game and not Keeping Up with the Kadashians.

Korean TV series is grounded on reality. Sure it is similar to Hunger Games meet Escape Room. But Hollywood properties are so geared on action that they forgot to do characterization.

I don’t mind subtitles. I wish it was in Korean. The acting was so great to bring us into the edge and emotional roller coaster. Imagine if we could feel the voice of the characters. I bet it brings the whole new depth of emotion.
