We went to go watch the Springboks vs Australia in Johannesburg in July 2019 where Siya was the water boy for the team. By many this was seen as degrading, but to me it was a sign of a great leader. A leader does not just lead by example, he also serves his team - something that Siya did with absolute graciousness. Afterwards he joined the Gwijo Squad (supporters who flew in from Capetown) in dance. Siya is deservedly the Springbok Captain!

I was talking with my housemate and one of the best qualities of these videos is that Squidge appreciates each team for its own merits; the Boks for their brutality, the French for their Frenchness, the Uruguayans for their passion (and being the best rugby team in the world). That kind of rugby ecumenism makes the game so much richer and more enjoyable to watch. As opposed to complaining about teams not playing rugby "the right way."

been waiting for this video for weeks and made my girlfriend watch it with me. A woman who’s opinion of rugby is that it’s an unnecessary relic of apartheid. As such you can imagine how much rugby she’s actually watched. Mid way through the video she says “ this guy is so good even I know what’s going on - and he’s funny”. This pretty much is the highest praise I can think of for your work.
As a Bok fan from Sri Lanka, who fell in love with them before the 2007 world cup and supporting them through out all these years, this analysis video made me emotional and tear up. Such a well deserved team to win the World Cup, I don't think even their own fans had them down to win it. Erasmus is a bloody genius and the entire Bok squad played with so much heart and passion. The final against England was an absolute pleasure to watch! Great analysis mate!

Thanks Squidge. As a South African who loves the game, the past few years have been really hard on the fans. When Rassie took over, we started to hope. But then we started seeing this kicking game "plan A" and most of us could not understand it. We started to win a few games again, and the fans were placated. and throughout 2018, we continued to be hesitant in "believeing again". But 2019..... oh what a year. the strategy started to make sense (thanks to some of your analysis) and you could hear the intake of breath as we won the rugby championship. But most pundits kept reminding us: "no team, that has won the rugby championship in a world cup year, has ever gone on to win the actual WORLD CUP". So we went into the world cup with most of us hoping for a world cup victory but happy with a semi final appearance. And then we lost to NZ in the opening game of our pool.... and the pundits again said: "no team that has lost a pool game has ever won the world cup".... and it just got better and better and better. The Semi final against Wales was a squeeky bum affair, but we got through it. And the best possible thing to happen was England beating NZ for us. England played their 2019 "final"in the Semi's. The week before the final, the entire UK media had written us off as runners up, and when Cheslin stepped Farrell, you could hear the UK media snapping their pencils and choking on their tea and it was GLORIOUS. As a patriotic South African, the 2019 rugby world cup, and our teams journey to become the overall victors, gives me such hope for my country. Because when we all look past our diferneces and come together as one unit, we are unstoppable! Thanks for the great video as always. and keep up the awesome work. !

Been following you since you started, Squidge. Two things: 1: When this lockdown is over, you are invited to a braai at my house in Johannesburg. Everything is on me, including your plane ticket. 2: It is at this braai that we will discuss your future job as analyst for the Springboks. Name your price.

This was so wonderful Squidge. From 2017 to the moment the final whistle on the 2nd November 2019 when my Springboks were crowned World champs you captured so well. It was a real rollercoaster of emotions but so worth it

Just to say, regarding the Springboks' nerves of steel is largely thanks to rather rough pitches and somewhat poor weather conditions. Our playing environment has never been comfortable which is why in the 1995 RWC the Springboks were not only able to take on guys like Jonah Lomu but also quietly competed against each other to see who could get to him first. Tackling a person has always been softer and more comfortable than tackling the turf. So our guys, I'm a Saffa if you hadnt noticed, relished the challenge to tackle and which is why our scrums are one of our preferred forms of attack, its hard hitting and dominating. No one ever wants to hurt an opposition player but often do just because the Springboks can handle a lot. I love my team and I really love the diversity, its a much better representation of our country than it has been in previous years. Thank you Coach Erasmus and Captain Kolisi and team of course. One of the reasons our team had a lot of potential but not much kinetic between RWCs 2015 -2019 was that the coaches didnt always know what to make of our guys. Something I have yet to be proven wrong with is the coach or leader in any group who is likely to be really good is one who has worked his way up the system. One who comes from outside and starts high up might have good insight but often not sure how that looks on the ground which is why I think one of our bedt coaches ever is Rassie Erasmus since he has played rugby even to international level, he knows how it looks on the ground and what variables to consider, and also he knows different teams will use different tactics. Thus our best years of rugby and I would go so far as to say that our best RWC of the three we have won was last year. I see how much more the country got behind our team because we had a decent proportion of coloured and black players who are brilliant and who are picked, possibly another reason why we were able to score two tries in the final. There was such unity and coherence in the team. I love our guys. And the coaching staff.

This is simply brilliant! The level of in depth analysis you've done of Rassie's game plan(s) and springboks team culture that lead to their World Cup victory is mind-blowing! Love and truly appreciate your work dude, keep it up!

As a rugby enthusiast living in South Africa, I can confidently say you hit the nail on the head with this one Robbie! The analysis is perfect as you unpack the awe-inspiring story of the springboks' development during the past decade. This was a pleasure to watch and honestly made my day, content like this makes the uncertainty of our current time all the more manageable thank you so much!

Supporting the Springboks is an emotional rollercoaster like no other, but that World Cup win, like every other win, brings South Africans together like no politician ever could,no matter where in the world we may find ourselves... And that is why my blood is forever green ... I am proudly South African

Solid video, as always man. I think another good point is that Rassie got a lot of diverse rugby brains like yours in the camp, not just filled it with ex players or coaches rising up the ranks. PS 34m is wildly impressive

Simply brilliant. Besides your hilarious fascination with Rassies' bits and pieces as well as the Hyenas, it was very interesting and extremely entertaining. I had a bloody good laugh. As a South African , I felt that fire to demolish 'all' sitting in my lounge watching. I can only imagine how much 'will to win' the boys must have felt on the field.

What Rasmus did for South Africa is what Deschamps did for the French football side in 2018. No one above the team and a culture of working for each other and maximum chemistry and cohesion! Brilliant to see!

This was amazing Squidge, and unexpected, so thank you so much. I just would like to add my two cents on the Alistair Coetzee tenure. I didn`t rate him highly as a coach, I still don`t, but he was also very unlucky. At the time he was appointed, the squad was rather old and many had retired. He was also appointed rather late, so he didn`t have as much time to get his house in order. Add to that the fact that only one of our franchises was really playing good rugby at the time, the Lions under Johann Ackermann, they made 3 super rugby finals at a time when SA teams were struggling to get there and they did so playing a very attractive brand of rugby. This together with the fact that at that time overseas players were not very welcomed into the Springboks, put a lot of pressure on Coetzee to put many of these Lions players in the Springboks setup and to play this attacking brand of rugby, however, that style doesn`t work as well at international level and Coetzee was also not like Ackermann, Coetzee was far more practical and defensive minded. If you add all these things up, and add the goal/threat of transformation by the governing bodies, it`s no wonder he had a terrible go at it.
