When I was a kid, a baby squirrel fell out of a tall tree in our yard. It's mother never took it back. So my family nurtured it. She would climb up me and sit on my shoulder to eat. My adult neighbor, by contrast, out of fear wouldn't even go outside if he saw ANY animal in his yard. The next year, when our squirrel had babies, she brought them to me almost daily for food and companionship. Animals seem to instinctively know who to trust.

When I was young I had a backyard squirrel named Peanuthead. I would put out peanuts onto the patio for him everyday. One day I ran out of peanuts and Peanuthead got so frustrated he chewed a hole through the patio screen door and made his way into the house. I was in the kitchen when it happened. I heard a yell from my dad who was in the living room. He was taking a nap on the couch when he was suddenly awakened by Peanuthead as he ran across him in a panicked frenzy desperately searching for a way out of the unfamiliar environment... What a good memory that was. I don't think I ever laughed so hard in my life :-0

My whole apartment complex is allowed to feed the animals (which is rarely allowed most places) so we go out and feed the squirrels almost daily. @@user-vn7ce5ig1z I’ve been renting for most of my life and I’ve never lived anywhere that it was allowed or not frowned upon. Honestly they don’t cause any problems here because we have a big courtyard out front and the residents pretty much keep the sidewalk swept and cleaned of any debris left by peanuts and what not. It’s the smokers area as well so I don’t really go out there except to drop off the food because I can’t be around smoke. I currently live in subsidized housing for the first time in my life although this is a very clean and nice building and our landlord is great. He’s actually nicer than any landlord I’ve had an any other building that was just a regular apartment building. I do feel God put me here for a reason when I was going through this hard time in my life because he knew how much it meant to me to feed the animals and that I have been treated badly by landlords in the past unfairly. Anyhow I think they let us do it because a lot of us here we have so little else in life that it can really make a difference that you have that one thing, you know? I guess it’s hard to understand unless you ever reach that point in your life and I would not wish they on anybody! God bless!

Squirrels always stash food for the Winter. Those who do hibernate often do not sleep right through the coldest times, as they find it difficult to effectively insulate themselves with enough body fat and often need to top up their metabolism and their fat. I saw a squirrel out foraging in mid-December, when it really should have been either asleep or visiting one of its stashes, so I decided to start bulk purchases of raw peanuts and feed what I have now learned is a small colony of squirrels. My work is far from done...

I remember when I was roughly five or six when a squirrel had made nest in our attic and began to break through so we caught one of the babies that had fallen and we began to take care of him. Fed him nuts. Until one day we took him to a lake near by and we were sitting in the back our truck and I was eating McDonald french fries and I could tell by the way he was looking at me that he was hungry and curious about what I was eating. So held one of my fries up to him and that was the first time he ever actually took something from one of us directly instead of just us leaving food for him to eat. We knew of a park nearby that had tons of squirrels so we released him there. Animals are one of the joys in life and I Love seeing things like this.

I have squirrel friends. In particular, a female squirrel. Who gets pregnant a lot. Avocado is good for squirrels, when my pregnant mama comes around, I'll get avocados for her extra nourishment if ask those babies inside.

He didn't speak english and my dad didnt speak spanish so he just drove next door to this hispanic mobile home park so they could figure out where hes supposed to be lol. Never saw that man again.

OMG...Totally reminds me of a squirrel friend I once had. She used to come into my house. And I would feed her. I remember her clinging to the screen on my kitchen door. And then one day she brought 6 little babies to my house to show them where to get fed. First time I had ever seen tiny baby squirrels.

I had a squirrel come up to me in the wild. I had a 12 gauge shotgun so I stuck a nutty chocolate bar in the barrel and slowly lowered it to the squirrel. It chowed down and seemed pretty happy. Didn't do any shooting that day as I didn't feel like disturbing the squirrels and a few deer in the area. Was just there to murder some clay discs but ended up feeding a few squirrels and chilling.

I started feeding the squirrels who live near me right after the pandemic hit. It's funny, but I hadn't really noticed them before. At first I gave them walnuts and they loved them. Then I started feeding them almonds too and they loved those even more to the point that they would ignore the walnuts. Then I gave them hazelnuts and they went absolutely nuts (pun intended) over them. Now they turn their noses up at the walnuts or almonds because they know I have their favorite...hazelnuts. I could watch them eat and bury their nuts all day long. They know my voice and now literally come running whenever I call them. I feel privileged that these adorable, smart & wild creatures let me get so very close to them. They may be getting a meal but I have gotten much more from them.

I have a squirrel outside that knows it's time eat when he sees his "bowl" and I bang on it to make noise. I've named him..lol.. makes it easier with the other squirrels. He will run up and jump on me, eat out of the bowl, enjoy fresh water from another bowl, bury some nuts, and just hang out for a bit. They are quite interesting and very intelligent.

I lived in an apartment where I had a tree right outside my bedroom window. A branch was really close to it. I would put food out for a friendly squirrel every day. He/she eventually just sat on the sill with it's nose pressed right up to the glass. One of his/her favorite snacks was frozen grapes.

You see now that after viewing this , it's more fun to have squirrels as actual pets that never leave. For once you get attached to seeing them, and then some days they don't come around , you worry about them in whether or not they are ever going to come back or that you will never see them again. That's too emotionally tough.

I've fed my backyard squirrels almonds, peanuts, walnuts, acorns I have gathered from elsewhere, pumpkin seeds etc. They still won't come anywhere near me. I have to toss them so they can fetch 'em, or I just have to scatter them and walk away. Even the squirrels at work disappear as soon as the door unlocks. They sit in the tree waiting and watching you leave the nuts and when you go back inside they slowly make their way to the nuts. Fox squirrels like this one are braver...maybe that's partly why. I rarely see fox squirrels, only grey squirrels. :(
