Squirrel Steals Egg From Abandoned Owl NestBox

These eggs are over 90 days old. The original pair of screech owls laid 4 eggs. One hatched and the owlet successfully fledged. It has been about a month since the original pair left the nestbox with their fledgling. An other pair of screech owls found the box, and the female owl has been spending the days inside the box with the 3 old abandoned eggs. The screech owl was not home this morning and a squirrel took one of the old eggs.

Squirrels do raid bird nests for fresh eggs. I'm not sure how they can tell it is edible inside the shell. I would guess that 90 day old screech owl eggs don't smell or taste good.
