Maybe they’re all just a little shy about taking a bath in front of their human whilst the camera is rolling? 😂 Have you ever tried feeding them fresh coconut? I live in the UK, where things like the squirrel vitamin supplements you give yours aren’t available (sadly, eastern grey squirrels have been declared an invasive species here & as such pet stores don’t carry anything that encourages them & vets aren’t legally allowed to treat them if you find an injured one 😢) The ones that come to my garden always get a warm welcome though & fresh coconut seems to be their favourite luxury treat. It certainly seems to work wonders for their coats/skin. Your channel is so wholesome & heart warming - it’s always a pleasure to watch someone kind showing these intelligent, charismatic & feisty little beasts the love & support they deserve 😊

I discovered squirrels were keen on coconut & fresh avocado from watching Seymour The Squirrel videos (another KZbin channel dedicated to caring for fluff-tailed friends). It took a day or two before any of my visitors dared to try the strange new offerings, but soon enough they all got into it. Over the years tastes have changed & the avocado is less popular with my current batch, but discovering a piece of fresh coconut seems to please them no end 🥥🐿

Back in 1980 when we were first married we had a family of squirrels living in our attic. They would scratch at the kitchen door whenever my wife made banana bread. So we would sit on the kitchen floor like statues with pieces of banana bread on our knees. The squirrels got used to us and trusted us enough they became regular little visitors whenever my wife baked. Never tried to pet them. But they would sit on our laps and have a wonderful snack.

That's adorable!❤❤❤ I've been baking bread nearly every other night (two loaf pan!) for the past 5 years or so and I then cut the bread into flyable (or holdable!😅) cubes and throw them under a huge tree that borders the woods and I've literally got 2nd and 3rd generation squirrels, raccoons, birds and deer that eat here daily (nightly, for the raccoons...although they come by my door right as it's getting light out once in awhile to beg for an extra treat (nuts, grapes..whatevers on offer!❤) before going back up her tree to sleep for the day! They bring their babies to meet the food lady as soon as they're able, it would seem! I absolutely love it...❤❤❤

In the 70s, my family lived in Florida and there were several squirrels that used to travel past our house on the power line. My older sister worked at Mr Donut, and would always bring home ‘ day olds’. My father began breaking them up and leaving them by a tree near our porch. Slowly, he trained them to climb down for the treats. Eventually, they got so used to him that they would come up and take them out of his hands. ❤🐿️🍩

I used to hand feed the local squirrels. Some would eat sitting on my knee while I handed them walnuts. There was this one poor guy. I named him Muttly, as in mangy mutt because he had mange. Middle of winter, bald as a naked mole rat, and shivering in the snow. I wanted to knit him a sweater. He was finding somewhere warm to sleep and I kept him fed. Whenever someone walked by while I was feeding him I would explain that he was bald from mange and he wasn't rabid or anything like that, because he looked so strange that I was worried someone would think he was rabid. He survived and grew back all of his fur. 😁 He was a gentleman. One of the sweetest squirrels I've met.

The 5 squirrels 🐿️ I feed I can tell apart by their mannerisms but also the subtle differences in their colours. For example one has cream colour behind his ears, another a different patterned tail, another has spots on the underbelly, one is much smaller and thinner etc…… their personalities are different too.

So I learned this from a KZbin creator years ago that had a pet chinchilla. The dust bath is actually to keep them from getting sick as it keeps them dry and removes any oils that may have gotten in to their fur. Rather quite interesting that different animals from the same general species need to different care regiments to keep healthy. Glad someone is at least showing these squirrels some love in what seems like a very busy neighborhood.

I have raised many many baby squirrels over the years here in Houston. They are a joy!! I release in my back yard an as long as they come back I would feed them. Slowly they left but recently I have a female fox squirrel come right up to me for a pecan.I knew it was one of my babies. She comes to the sliding glass door an peers in for a hand out. She loves avocado. My wild squirrels never eat it but all my babies grew up eating it. Thank you for these sweet videos.

I worked with a wild animal rescue/rehab when I was in high school working with all sorts of overlooked wild animals to re-release into the wild. My favorite each year were the loads of baby squirrels people found in trees while doing yardwork and the rehab owner would take them in. We'd have to hand-raise them until they were old enough to release.

I’m glad you put up some of the care for them! They are so sweet! A ranger at manatee state park in Florida showed us some pictures of what happened to some of their park squirrels from them getting spoiled by the humans , they quit foraging and finding squirrel food and foraged in tents and cars! He was telling us not to leave food in tents, because squirrels would make one hole going in and 5 holes going out! 😅 I didn’t know that squirrels teeth grow similar to toenails and fingernails and that chewing on the nuts and trees kept their teeth chewed down! The picture he showed was of the teeth getting so long they interfered with eating and some of them pushed out through the face! They were able to rescue them and added them to the ranger talks! I haven’t been back in years! Some of the Florida parks have black/white squirrels,golden yellow and white, it was cool to see them out of state put on a different color winter coat! Thank you, squirrels are very precious indeed. 🐿️❤️ I don't know how true is what that person said about squirrels stopping to do their job if they receive food from people, because I didn't see that happening here. Urban squirrels depend on people's kindness to survive. I've been feeding these squirrels for 4 years and they still do their job, foraging and taking care of the trees around here, and only when they run out of food, they come to my window. In the fall season when the nuts are ripe, they don't come to my window that often. But there are not many trees here, so it's not enough food.

@@macduggles that’s so sad , I’ve seen it here too! Their supposed to be protected! They should work out a special deal for a car port or something if you don’t like the stuff on your car! We had a beautiful huge tree at the apartment complex I live in, they didn’t want to pay for maintenance and cut the whole thing down! This tree was huge and spread out! Now the air gets so hot and the squirrels and birds have got into every air conditioner unit,walls and vent pipes, attics,phone and television relay boxes, because they have no where else to go! They definitely need to figure out a way to enforce the code on that for sure!

Your video brought back good memories. I had a squirrel when I was 9 years old. He would take crackers from me and stole the Sunday paper for nesting material. He went to hibernate, and when he reappeared in spring, he had babies with him. It was a she all along and didn't know it. 😅

This just showed up in my feed and I love it! I've beem feeding the squirrels in my yard for a few months now and today one finally felt comfortable to eat several walnuts out of my hand. She was one of my first "friends" to show up for regular meals but then she stopped coming and I was sad. Turns out she was just busy having babies. Now shes nursing and my guess is she was tired and just felt like having a nice dinner without having to work too hard. Lol Just a tired mum having a little night out.

When I lived in Western Massachusetts I had the fatest grey squirrels I've ever seen! In winter, they'd get white areas on the outsides of their ears. I used to put up a cob of dried corn on a special holder for them. They really loved it!

Thank you for posting and sharing. I just moved and the new squirrels around my place look very similar to this. They act perfectly healthy but look a little rougher than this. I believe they have been fed by others because they immediately approached. They don't take from my hand though because, I wasn't sure what was going on with them. Dropping it in front of them was sufficient.

If you do work up the confidence to feed them by hand just be sure to wash your hands before & after. My Swirly Girl actually puts her little hands in my hands when I feed her but the boys are much to skittish & just snatch & take off, corse it could be for fear of Swirly's rath, she is head of security, after all;)

I had a chinchilla for a while (for watching a coworker's exotic pet ranch while they were on vacation; I don't support "exotic pets", but also knew they needed looking after. The chinchillas were easy to take care of, while the wallabies, assorted antelope, goats, and sheep, and emus, a bunch of weird looking chickens (in a good way), a llama, 3 horses, and I'm sure others I'm forgetting. The chinchilla I was given was so sweet, and loved her dust bath in a 1/2 gallon food container with a tapered end to minimize dust flying. Chelsea the Chinchilla was a very neat and public bather !

Their dexterity is truly amazing. How they analyze a situation and find a solution, l🐿️. I guess its true then, you can lead a squirrel to a dust bath but you can’t make them roll in it, lol

I guess wild squirrels are happy with their “dust bath” in actual soil rather than needing it supplied for them. I love that you know them individually! And Jane’s footprints were adorable! I couldn’t help it, I actually said out loud “oh look at her footprints”…. I’m the only one in the house right now! Hahaha
