i've from my 13 years old riding with shimano till i bought my racing bike, a "stumpjumper worldcup carbon elite" it came with just rear derraileur, i thought it was crazy to have a bigger ring on the rear than in the front, lol!, i've riding it for 3 years everyday, for average of 2:30 hours per day, i have never done it any manteinment and it still switch gear every time i press it smooth fast, strong!, i've forgotten what is to bring the bike to my father to adjust again the derraileur, it has never happened to me since then, i would never ever switch from sram to any other brand, once you ride it, you know why you ride it, seeing this eagle series, makes me think, wow it would last till im old!, im 19 now and with this bike i have won amazing races and i would love to say thank you sram you changed my life, forever!

If ridden the Eagle XX1 almost 6 months now and here is my experience so far: 1. The 500% range is the key feature compared to the previous model and it's nice. I ride steep hills and I had to switch chainrings depending on my tour plans. That problem is solved with Eagle. 2. It's pretty smooth, but not on a different level to the previous version. 3. You need to plan a little bit to get into 1st gear. Because the cock is so large you need at least half a pedal stroke (without torque) to get the chain on. The aluminum of the 1st gear is also much softer than the rest of the cassette, so you really need to be careful. It's really a granny gear though, so you shouldn't need it too much. Otherwise I would recommend to get a smaller chainring. Overall I'm happy with it so far. If you have a 1x11, I would anyways recommend to just get a bigger 1st cock. It's much cheaper and also increases the gear range. Buddy of mine got a 44 tooth and it with a 30 tooth chainring is similar to eagles 50/32.

With wireless shifting you could eventually have the front chainring move in-line with the rear derailer when shifting, so you always have a good chain-line. Not sure if that would be worth it or not, but it's atleast possible. Or just get rid of the cassette and put all the gears inside the hub somehow..
@MAGAIVER7 жыл бұрын
There are some internally geared hubs already, Shimano Alfine and HollofRohllof speedhub for example, they are great for urban use but it seems like they aren`t up to the abuse of technical trail riding yet.
@TheTurboGfx7 жыл бұрын
MAGAIVER Problem with gears inside the hub is it's all rotating weight which makes the bike less responsive and feel heavier.
@bradwjensen7 жыл бұрын
wenedi A cassette is no different.. It's attached in the middle of the wheel (hub) and rotates, albeit off to the side. I thought having something in the center of the wheel would make it less noticeable than having it elsewhere on the wheel when rotating around. That's also why some companies attach heavy batteries for lights and other instruments to the hubs. Also, having gears inside the hub would not seem like it's rotating because it would not be more heavy one side or another. it would be the same all the way around the axel, so it would be as if nothing was rotating or moving at all.
@skibikeride20007 жыл бұрын
+Brad Jensen Having the weight equally distributed around the hub would make it balanced so it wouldn't wobble but yes extra weight around the hub would absolutely make the big accelerate more slowly and feel heavier. The effect of a cassette is minimal for 2 reasons. 1 is because they are relatively light weight. 2 is that because of the free hub they are not always spinning with the wheel
@TheTurboGfx7 жыл бұрын
Yes you´re right. A cassette weights significantly less than the whole gears they are in the hub. Just think about lubrification and the mechanism to change gears which must be included. The rotational mass of the cassette also only metters while accelerating not when breaking like you said because of the freehub. Another huge point for the traditional drivetrain would be the simplicity basicly anyone can maintain a derailleur or cassette that´s not the case with an internal gearbox.

Engineered in Germany= the first three years of development comprised of meetings to schedule meetings. The next step is every engineer working separately, without respect for the job or parts other engineers were working on. Then at the end, the deadline comes and SRAM has to rush it all to market and figure out how to make it work. This is the reality of German engineering, but in the outside world, people continue to think German engineering is where it's at.

Because it's getting harder and harder to find high end bikes (Even hardtails) with front derailleur compatibility, which is essential for me as I like small gaps between gears (Maximum efficiency on long climbs) and a gear range that covers everything from big road descents to the toughest technical climbs. I already have a 533% range with very linear jumps between gears and small gaps between gears for about 1/3 the cost with flawless reliability. This wouldn't annoy me too much only Shimano have swallowed the same bullshit and are reducing the gear ranges on their recent groupsets.
@maddoxinc16427 жыл бұрын
Because the hype is over the top and the pricing is even worse. SRAM wants to tell us what we need instead of listening to what we want. I race all summer long, no one wants 12 speed. Just imagine being able to run whatever size ring you want up front with an 11x50 cassette in back. It would be awesome and finally kiss goodbye to the front mech. Another chainlink closer to the perfect bike IMO.
@onilovni12347 жыл бұрын
Sram, why don't you design a proper gearbox please? And the 11 speed XX1 was already enough for me. The Eagle system is 100g heavier than the previous model and XC racers use it WTF? If you want better ratio just change the front chainring, no need to change the complete drivetrain for a 12 speed.
@maddoxinc16427 жыл бұрын
When you think German Engineering, don't think practical, think impractically complex and unnecessary. The Germans are people in love with themselves, they don't engineer reliability, they engineer watches forgetting that the Swiss have already mastered that process. You'll notice that Mercedes and BMW cars lose value faster then most any other car except for the hundai and kia shit boxes. They are too damn expensive, unnecessarily complex and impossible to repair. People with money to buy them drive them till the warranty runs out and trade them in for a new model. Those without common sense, buy them used and spend the rest of their life kicking themselves. I've spent over 15 years in the luxury car business, this is all I see.
@onilovni12347 жыл бұрын
+MaddoxInc I agree with 100% of what you say a about german cars. But still, I am mad enough to buy one, but a second-hand one. And for the Eagle group, it makes sense after what you said. But still, marketing isn't a relative thing. The first company that makes a proper gearbox is going to have my money and that's all.
@unsoundness49057 жыл бұрын
Sram Eagle is awesome in terms of how great and smooth it works, but at the same time it's really sh***y. The whole concept of raising the cassette range and adding the 12th cog is good, but they went completely the wrong way. Instead of adding a huge 50t cog, which raises weight, forces You to use bigger NW chainring up front, longer cage derailleur and longer chain (again adding more to weight), why not make a 9-45 cassette? E'13 already prooved, that XD freehub can handle a 9t cog. The same range, smaller, lighter drivetrain... and cheaper.
@maddoxinc16427 жыл бұрын
I agree, I would pay good money for a solid gearbox. Something that can't be damaged when my rear hits a stump or a log. Regarding German cars, I don't buy anything second hand unless it's 2000 or older. The 80s and 90s were prime for German bombers. I have a weakness for old Porsche and BMW rockets. Now, the Germans spend far too much time pissing in the same pot about things like led head lights and "smart" cars and ignoring the important things like reliability and maintenance cost. I would never buy a post millennium German car unless the deal was too good to pass up and even then, I wouldn't keep it long enough to break.

it took a room of german engineers to add more gears to the back of a 100 year old design of sliding a chain across a sprocket and then coating it with a fancy metal? Just so you know we need the drivetrain gearbox rotating around in a cvd design wrapped around the bottom bracket please make it out of titanium,magnesium,carbon fibre and delrin.and make ghost shifting a thing of the past.

The salary that you get at the end is lower. But the company has to pay almost 100% more. Insurance, taxes and other stuff. So the normal worker is because of that more expensive in Europe than in America.

Dear Sram, Please make a road-specific 12s 1x drivetrain with 11,12,13,14,15,17,20,24,29,35,42,50 spacing. Call it "Road One". Hint: It's a 1x drivetrain for road bikes with predominantly 1 tooth jumps so we roadies can maintain our cadence but also have good range for climbing. Next step is to develop a sealed carbon fiber enclosure with a lubricant level that immerses the lower gear of the cassette. The lubricant will be drawn up to the other gears by the chain trapping lubricant between the link plates.

You do realise people have been converting their bikes to 1x for years, right? Sram and Shimano are pretty late to the party. It's a trend first promoted by the riders. Of course they're going to advertise and push their product. There's demand for it and soon the competition will be even stiffer. Front derailleurs will soon become obscure. Not because big companies pushed them out, but because majority of the riders didn't want them.
