My father would shoot only 20 gauge except for one duck gun. He said, for upland game like grouse and quail, a 20 was more than enough gun and that in fact it made hunting more challenging. He was the finest wing shot I've ever seen so he was intentionally handicapping himself. I wish he was still around so I could hunt with him again.

I'm an a American Duck hunter, I'm 5'9" I weigh 230lbs (i guess thats about 125kilos) very muscular and I use a 20 gauge aka 20 bore for everything from ducks, turkeys, deer, and hogs. If you can put the bead where it needs to be it can drop anything a 12 gauge can drop

A lot of people scoff at the 20 ga, but one thing most people don’t realize, is that ballistically, a 20 ga has twice the power of a .44 magnum. I love my 10 and 12 ga guns, but I love my 20 ga guns also.

I own a 12gauge pump that I love but shooting slugs she lets me know Im alive, and it shows the next morning but the crazy thing is I can't wait to do it all again even knowing she is going to kick the crap out of my shoulder. I just purchased a20 gauge SxS can't wait for it to come in, and see the difference of recoil. Not saying I'm putting my hard hitting 12gauge away, want to try the 20gauge and add to my collection.

Great content and comparison video. As a women I wanted a versatile light shotgun that can do it all because I'm starting out and I want to be able to hunt a variety of game, maybe even deer. Birds and active small game field hunting are my main interest. A .410 isn't enough so I went for the 20 gauge. Hopefully the recoil isn't going to be too much to handle.

The 12 gauge has a archilles heel that's very hard to reinforce,the problem with a 12 gauge is the fact that you cannot use slower burning powders in the 12 ga. like you can in the 20 bore can,this is due mainly to the smaller bores breech,to keep breech pressures in the 8,500-11,500 P.S.I.range,the 12 ga.has to have faster burning powders due to the larger chambering.(only in 1-ounce to 1-1/8 ounce loads,in heavier payloads,the slower burning powders can be used in the 12 bore,1-1/4 ounce and heavier loads of shot) Since about 90%+of ALL shooting will be done with an 1-ounce of shot,the 20 bore makes a lot more sense in general.
@moeshipley41708 жыл бұрын
Great video, Sam. You should do a three-gun comparison of the 12, 16 and 20-bore guns. I have a very old Remington 870 WIngmaster in 16-gauge that was deadly on doves in Hawaii. Although I have shotguns in all three gauges, the 16 will always be a favorite. It throws almost as much #8 as the 12-bore, but is much easier on the shoulder.

Range and power have nothing to do with bore/gauge, and everything to do with the size of shot and the powder charge behind it. So, 32 grams of #5 will have the same range and down range energy whether shot out of both a 12 and a 20, provided they have the same powder charge.
@Kingcrosmere8 жыл бұрын
But the thing is though the 12gauge has a bigger shot pattern and that could be better really, it means you have a biggger killing area, and are able to at least damage or kill anything easier.

Done a lot of small game killing with my Mossberg 500 in 20. I will say though you are better off with the heavier loads to do proper hunting, and 3 inch magnum was preferred for a lot of longer shots on larger small game, as well as bigger birds. I prefer American #4 and #2 birdshot, so the payload weight was always a a concern with th3 20, but it did work. Lot of my friends still prefer it for clay shooting because the youth gun is so quick and light. Its always been a fun bit of theory to talk about, which is the best versatile cartridge, 12 bore because it can be loaded down, or 20 3 inch magnum because it can be loaded up? There are established handloads putting the 20 into the 1 1/4 ounce lead load range, which can indeed be used fora great deal of ethical hunting. The 12 of course has good light target loads for your own making as well as good factory loads. I've heard some people putting away their old 12 bore 2 3/4 guns away in favor of a smaller 20 bore 3 inch magnum because of all the reasons you mentioned, especially as people get older. I forget the laws in Europe about non toxic, but that's where the 20 seems to start coming apart. Upland lead, the 20 will do almost anyone for any reason; but the waterfowl's steel loads can't find enough space, and the larger steel shot sizes don't pattern as well, out of the 20. And, that's the other flaw in the 20's long game and versatility, it doesn't load well with as many sizes of buckshot, and just can't carry enough pellets of that either. But then again, its not exactly what its made for. Personally, I've chosen the path of 10 bore with extremely light loads because I prefer the heavier guns to begin with, and can pattern any size shot well. I can load "light" 1 1/4 ounce loads for clay busting. I dont' suppose you will do a 10 Gauge Explained video ever?
@srspower8 жыл бұрын
What I was surprised by was how little recoil you could have from the 20 for the same load as shot with a 12. I guess with a tighter barrel you need less pressure, I'm no physicist!
@kingduckford8 жыл бұрын
If you have those cut up examples, go ahead and weigh the wadding and powder charge. recoil is determined by the entire weight of ejecta, which includes those other things, especially the wad. Also, if that 20 is backbored, there will be blowby which will decrease power and recoil, especially with old fibre wads. Without a chrnograph, hard to tell if the power is the same as well. What are the gun weights?

check out Gough Thomas' book Shotguns and Cartridges for Game and Clays - which will give you all the answer to anything shotgun. I strongly suspect the choking explains the variances as the barrel diameter has very little effect in pattern thrown. I use a 20b with 32" barrel and its an utter joy and patterns a treat.

you should do a video on cartridges and how the bigger channels tend to promote overly heavy loads and claim to shoot birds at some unimaginable distances with said cartridges. Basically asking for you to make a video on realistic shooting for the average person. I personally use #7 28g for almost everything and just 21gm for clays, which i consistently hit clays at 50-60yards. Just think a lot of people seem to think you need 36g #5's just to knock down a 30yd pheasant.

Yeah it seems very common for people to get over excited during pheasant season and start buying loads way over the top for the job ie: 36 grams of number 5!

@Britishshooter4 жыл бұрын
Why would you be surprised that the tests show identical results with identical penetration? Same load same muzzle velocity, duh...That point made, as someone who does a lot of long range patterning with both 12 and 20 it amazes me how few people realise that a 20 bore, choke for choke, gm for gm, will always out pattern a 12 at long ranges 50 to 60 yards. On average a 20 bore will deliver an extra pellet (5 shot pellet size) per 4 gm in a 30 inch circle at long range. A not insignificant extra 8 pellets at 60 yards from a 32 gm load. The only real difference is that a 12 bore produces a shorter shot string than a 20 bore due to the larger bore diameter but then again, many experts prefer the longer shot string of the 20 to 'lay' across the line of the bird. Any modern O/U 20 bore can fire 32 or 34 gm cartridges today, although my testing indicates that any load above 32 gm in 12 bore or 20 bore will produce less satisfactory patterns than 32 gm at long range, so 32 gm is the optimum pattern wise at 50 or 60 yards in ether calibre.

I posted my own sentiments on Browning's Model 725 20 gauge over and under shotgun via online. I will repeat same for here. Too bad lead shot has been banned by federal law for waterfowl hunting since 1991. In fact, the Klamath Wildlife Area 7 miles south of Klamath Falls , Oregon off Highway 97 even bans lead shot for hunting pheasant. Aside from the asinine restrictions and regulations which have plagued us for decades either a 20 gauge double-barrel shotgun: side by side or over and under with 26" barrels bored improved/modified choke, remains a practical, versatile, venerable and historical sporting firearm. For the dual purpose of "waterfowl/upland birds" the 20 gauge certainly has it's place. Aside from sporting use there is even another application for a 20 gauge: self defense/house protection and yes.....even for preserving law and order, being a formidable deterrent to criminal and predatory outlaw activity! I'm alluding to the current September 2017 natural disasters in Mexico (a devastating earthquake), not to mention hurricane damage in and around the Gulf Coast of Texas, much of Florida, and Puerto Rico. I'm referring to the aftermath where looters move in. While there may be better firearm choices to confront such lawlessness consider the reaility a 20 gauge might be the only firearm available for protecting innocent human life, families, and the local neighborhood community. Finally, I endorse the online You Tube video: "Dial 911 and Die: The Shocking Truth About The Police Protection Myth by Richard Stevens via www.jpfo.org. JPFO, Inc. is "America's Aggressive Civil Rights Organization". The terms gauge and bore are not synonyms and are not interchangeable. The firearm you have there is a 20 gauge. Bore refers to the actual diameter of the cylinder. Gauge is a measure of the number of lead balls of equivalent diameter it would take to weigh 1 pound.

Why do Brits insist on calling 10, 12, 16 and 28 gauge as being "bores"? .410 is a bore. Those earlier mentioned are all gauges.

.410 is a calibre not a bore. A bore is a fraction of a pound of lead rolled in to a ball.

If I'm going to be in the field all day, I carry a very light 20 ga. double. I want my birds dead on the wing and it does the job very well. I'm on target much faster than most of my friends and, if a second shot is needed, I'm back on target almost immediately. Is a 20 adequate in the duck blind? It's more than enough gun for decoying ducks.

I have a second hand beretta silver hawk in 20ga, I wasn't going to buy it because its no 12, but took the chance. After some experience I would never go back to 12ga 😂

@@CotmanKenny There's not much that a 12 can do that a 20 can't do just as well. And my double has 2.5" chambers.

12 gauges are for people with a poor aim

Shotguns are for people with poor aim. I shoot all my pheasants and clays with a .22 air rifle.
