I bet you have already heard about an SSD or solid state drive and how fantastic it seems to be. Is it really worth the price?
This project is a practical comparison of an SSD (solid state drive) and 3.5" HDD (hard disk drive). Even though most SSDs are in the 2.5" format I didn't take into consideration 2.5" HDDs, mainly because their capacity is lower and they are a lot slower than 3.5" hard disk drives.
Disks under test:
SSD - OCZ Vertex 4 128GB
HDD - WD Black 1TB
Test PC specs:
CPU: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 5400+ 2.80GHz
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-M56S-S3
RAM: Aeneon DDR2-800 CL4 4GB
GPU: Asus Radeon R7 250
PSU: CHIEFTEC 450W

Thoughts on storing games on a HDD 3.5 disk ? i either buy a SSD 250 GB for 50euro or a 2TB HDD for 70euro

You should have mentioned that theres a limited amount of read/write cycles on an SSD. HDD's are more reliable. If the electronics die, you can get a cheap replacement off e-bay and even do it yourself at home to replace. I'm using quite old 500gb 7200 rpm sata 2.0 and the 64-bit Win7 boots up in 10 seconds, and it's ready to use instantly after I enter my password. I'm sure my AMD quad-core CPU clocked at 3.93 ghz should be taken in count. Nice video in overall, average user friendly! :)

DaGunchijs You're right, I could have mentioned that. There is a limited amount of read/write cycles on SSDs, but there are special algorithms, which make sure all or most memory cells wear out evenly. There are also additional cells, which replace the ones in the worst shape. What do you mean by: "average user friendly"? Constructive feedback is a good thing :)

I have a 7-years HDD from 2009, it started to make noises and windows didn't boot anymore, I thought it had died... But no, still rocking, just deleted all partitions (after backup with Ubuntu Live DVD) and did a slow format of the entire disk, working solid.

Once all the cell blocks have been used up in your SSD it will slow down long before it fails and to keep your SSD running really fast you need to keep from ever filling it completely up. You can't erase data one a cell block as been used. All that can be done is just simply overwrite data in a cell block with new data. HDD does not suffer from this sort of problem as long as you keep the HDD defragged and all the data in order.

That's why they introduced the TRIM command for SSDs. Basically it informs your SSD which data blocks are no longer in use and can be wiped internally.

Just one question, which one has more probabilities to fail?
@ElectronFunCom

There is no formula for this. Both can fail at any time.

Can I install an SSD in my laptop? (Dell inspiron from 2009)
@ElectronFunCom

+Dionicio Garcia If your laptop has a 2.5" SATA hard drive - yes, you can replace it with an SSD.

Oh, thanks... Do you recommend me to install one?
@ElectronFunCom
@ElectronFunCom 8 жыл бұрын
+Dionicio Garcia It should make your laptop a lot faster - the operating system boot up, running programs, etc. I have SSDs in all my computers, even in my 9 year old stationary PC - thanks to the SSD it's still usable.

+ElectronFun.com Oh, thanks man, I will buy at least a 120gb ssd for my laptop which has gotten slow as hell, it takes like 5 minutes booting up... thanks for the answer!

+Dionicio Garcia Just one more thing came to my mind - the operating system. If you have an OS older than Windows 7 it doesn't have the TRIM command built in. This means your SSD will still work, but it will become slower over time. You can read more about TRIM here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trim_%28computing%29. I used to have Windows Vista in my 9 year old PC and I felt the OS was getting slower over time. Now I'm using Windows 10 and there's not such thing as slowness.

Everyone should wise up, hdd will eventually go the way of the dodo, just like the floppy. Almost all purely electronic devices if designed properly are better than any mechanical devices.

using 2.5 hdd is bad . can u explain more about it ? why ?
@ElectronFunCom
@ElectronFunCom 8 жыл бұрын
HDD is not bad, it's just terribly slow as a system drive. It's a lot cheaper than SSD, so it's better for storing large amounts of data.
