+Måns Åkesson Yeah. My SSD is mostly for Windows and some smaller applications that I use a lot. Games and other large programs go on my HDD. Sometimes I'll temporarily put a game on my SSD to reduce the load times, but usually that's the only improvement games get while on an SSD. It'd be nice if I could get an SSD that's as large as my HDD, but that's fairly expensive.

Buy a 120-240GB SSD for your SSD, apps and favourite games and a ~2TB storage drive for your movies, photos, documents and games you don't play as much (you can use something like Steam Tool to transfer games between). Massive quality of life difference.

+eurossocial I'd go with at least a 256GB drive if you have a large number of games. Otherwise you'll have to juggle games between the SSD and your storage drive. Not so bad if you have 10GB games. Kinda sucks if you have 40GB games.

We are all so fixated with the CPU and how fast it is and I could destroy any high end CPU by just replacing the HDD with one of this, because no matter how fast your i7 is if you have a huge bottle neck in your solid drive you are screwed.

I have a laptop with a HDD and a desktop pc with a SSD. I still prefer a SSD, but if you use a pc for normal tasks as booting up and playing a game, navigate, edit a word document, there is not so much difference on loading times. There is an obious difference, but it's not so big at all.

FYI, SSD is a LOT more expensive, and they have a much more limited lifetime. A conventional harddrive will last as long as its parts continue to work, but an SSD has a set number of read/write operations that it can ever do, then it's done even if all the parts still work. Just look up 300GB SSDs, not to mention 1TB.

I know SSDs are much faster, but the problem I don't like is the price. A 250 GB HDD for around $60, and a 256 GB SSD for around $160. And you get even get over 1TB in an SSD, which is still very rare to see for an SSD, while you can get up to 4TB in an HDD. To me personally, I prefer a HDD, mainly because of the price and the low storage.

These are not special server drives, either I own a WD Velociraptor that runs at 10,000RPM Laptops still commonly have conventional hard drives that run at 5400RPM So no, 7200RPM is not the only speed you can get. 7200 is the most common, but it is hardly the only speed.

Opening 25 simultaniously is not "real world". Imho nobody needs to have 25 apps running simultaniously and you will still get a slowdown, even with the fastest SSD and enough RAM, because having so many things running at once eats CPU time. Also because Windows 7 is kind of badly optimized (sorry for my English) for multi-CPU, you might feel a performance hit on all Apps even if the CPU utilization is only 1/n on an n-core system (e.g. 50% on a dual-core, 25% on a quad-core, 16.7% on a 6-core and 12.5% on an 8-core).
@rfvtgbzhn
@rfvtgbzhn 9 жыл бұрын
***** I use Windows 7 since a long time and I often notice a performance hit when an application needs 25% of CPU time on my quad-core system, so it is badly optimized for Multi-CPU. Of course this does not mean that it is better with other Windows OSes.
@rfvtgbzhn
@rfvtgbzhn 9 жыл бұрын
***** I also have SP1 installed, but this didn't change anything. It is still often reacting slower, when one application reaches 25% CPU utilization, especially when this application is single-threaded and hangs, all other applications and the OS itself are affected, despite taskmanager still showing only 25% CPU utilization.
@rfvtgbzhn
@rfvtgbzhn 9 жыл бұрын
Logan Stoker It is not a processor issue, if the CPU utilization is at 25%, it should not be much slower than at 0%, because it means that 75% of the CPU power are still available. It is clearly an issue with the operating system (the task scheduler to be precise). Also I don't have any overheating, not even at 100% with Pime95 or LINPACK. However it might be a bug of the OS that does not occur with every hardware configuration...
@panter485
@panter485 9 жыл бұрын
***** Windows 8 is great though, my pc went from starting up in about 30-40 seconds on a regular HDD to starting in 12 seconds on the same HDD. It's great having my computer start that fast and being able to open up for example google chrome 20 seconds after you press the boot button on your computer.
@rfvtgbzhn
@rfvtgbzhn 9 жыл бұрын
Panter485 I still would not use Windows 8, because the interface is so crappy: I would use much more time during the day because of the win 8 interface than what I would win because it boots a few seconds faster...
