SSL 2+ with PRO VLA II revisited

This was a super helpful video. No one show's you how to wire this thing to run in stereo. I have a WA-73-EQ single channel so I had to get a splitter. The one channel coming out of the pre amp goes into the splitter, the two outputs go into the input channels for channels one and two respectively, the outputs from the compressor go into channels 3 and 4 on my mixer. Channels 1 and 2 on the mixer are assigned as playbacks so I can't use those. Alot of people on here are showing you to hook up just channel 1 and then press link. When you do that you're not engaging the channel 2 compressor and you'll see that the VU meter on Channel 2 isn't moving. When you do it the way I described both VU meters work and the output level on the right becomes a true balance knob as opposed to just a volume knob. There's a million videos on here about using gear, very few about how to route any of it. Thanks for having the insight to post this. It took me two days to figure it out. The manuals for most gear SUCK by the way, so read em if you want but there typically isn't shit in any of them about routing, ESPECIALLY if your application isn't 100% straight forward, IE requires a splitter or something like that. In my DAW I record to channels 3 and 4 to get both sides of the EQ and just playback together labeling inputs Vocal 3 L / Vocal 4 R. Then I pan each left and right. Sounds great!

Nice job, it's good to see someone giving instruction on how to use a 2-input interface for outboard gear! One suggestion: try either TRS-TRS cables or XLR female to TRS cables coming out of the compressor back to your interface's inputs. Then select the "line" setting on the inputs. That'll give you much more wiggle room on your input gain settings. But hey, it's working for you so you've got it made :)

Why didn't you run XLR to XLR on the bus output to SSL interface input? That way you could use the 4K mode on the interface for additional color if you wanted?

It will be very helpful if you can do a video for bedroom producers like me, on how to connect a 2 input sound interface with a small mixer (4/5 channel)and then connect outboard gears to the mixer for mixing and mastering...I hope you will see my message..thanks again

there is theory behind compression, however you can just turn knobs until things sound good.

I had this exact setup. Upon driving my wa73-eq I figured I could get some nice saturation from my outboard unit by driving the input gain way up.. Next thing you know...a pop and now my ssl2+ is distorting and not playing any audio anymore. I'm suspecting I fried my ssl line-in. Very strange though.. why would my audio interface get fried!!??

the 2 does not have output 3/4 . only 2+ does

Great video! Can you use the RCA outputs in mono, I mean red can be the kick drum and the white one can be the snare? And process each track different?

this is a 2 in and 4 out interface so in theory you can use the RCA outputs individually if you like.

can you use RCA 1 and 2 same time as 1/4" out (monitors)? do you have to use rca 3/4?

I'm using 3 and 4 out because I need to go in 1 and 2. If you are asking if you can connect a set of monitors to the 3 and 4 the answer is yes. And there is second volume control knob that can either be used for 3 and 4 out or a second headphone out. In my set up I use 3 and 4 to go out of the interface, and I use the second head phone out (with a Y splitter cable) for a set of monitors. So I can effectively still have two sets of monitors and still have 3 and 4 to send signal out of the DAW.

There are different cables and adapters available for patching just about anything. The question is does you interface have enough ins/outs to make it work. This tutorial is specific to the SSL 2+ but not all interfaces are made equal. Try to find a video about your specific interface and see if it is possible.

this routing is more or less a post production set up. I use this for mixing/mastering. If I want to use the compressor for recording "live" to pc I rout it differently. i.e mic to comp, comp to ssl 2+. It's a bit of a pain to rewire but that's how I do it.

hi bro, please help me in choosing between ART pro MPA vs Presonus bluetube V2. It is quite confusing as both of them are around the similar price range here for dual channel inputs. I have a Presonus Tube Pre Amp and it sounded great until it started humming. Their gear is junk in my opinion. I've had boards from them and all kinds of other gear. I won't buy anything they make from hear on out. I have the ART and it's awesome, and built like a tank!

Compressing is to make the Audio signal controlled what you want is nothing to be higher than a specific threshold you set...and what you control is what the compressor does when the signal gets higher than a given threshold
