I put the brand New SSL2 Bus powered interface through the paces in a real world scenario. In the spirit of the "Bedroom Engineer/ Home Recordist" I did a quick recording in my bedroom using nothing but the SSL2 and included plugins, EZ- Drummer, Studio one 3 Professional, Bias FX2, and a killer mic from Lauren Audio. This little fella packs a serious punch! it easily trumped a much larger and far more expensive interface (name omitted) that I have been using for several years. This has proven to be an excellent interface for on the go recording. In fact all the audio in this video was recorded through the SSL2. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

I feel ya, I actually did a test today between three different 2 channel desktop interfaces. To test the performance of each at various sample rates. The SSL2 surprised me yet again, outperforming "in that test" both other interfaces at higher sample rates. And "to my eses" sounded better even at lower sample rates. I will say the SSL2 is the only one of the three that would comfortably push the Sure. Knowing your gear and how to get what you want out of it is FAR more important than "status". As a preference my main recording rig is a 24 channel Radar Studio with amazing front end including NEVE, Great River, Kush Audio, Daking,API, Tonelux, etc... I would not hesitate to use this to do a legit recording.

Hi Jay, Got my SSL2 and I felt the same like I felt on your vocal. SSL definitely gave some clarity but lost the punch, gain, mids and body of the vocal. Of course this can be manipulated in post production. But I am a fan of capturing the best source possible and I sing/record without any effects and leave it to my engineer in the post. What's your response on this? Additionally did you record the part without 4k also on SSL2? The airiness, clarity and upper register is very prominent when the 4k is on. But the depth, vibe, presence and certain sexiness/hotness is more prominent without it. If that's not recorded on SSL, was it recorded on Neve? I recorded on the 2i2 and SSL2 and found them totally different while 2i2 suited my voice (also I am used to it) but it lagged the clarity and upper ends of SSL2. What do you think. Thanks again. And sorry to put up so many queries. It's impossible to find musically mature technicians.
@JayFlemingMusic
@JayFlemingMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Please forgive the delay. Everything was recorded using only the SSL preamps etc.. I used the interface alone with the plugins that either come with or come as a 6-month trial. The preamps to my ears are very neutral compared to my Neve or API. I used the 4k on the vocals also. I find that the MIcrophone choice matters a LOT with this box and the way it responds. To my ears, there doesn't seem to be nearly the "wooliness" or "smear" if you will, that I get from other devices like this. And I have run the gamut. The preamps feel like any of the other SSL 500 series preamps I have had. Very fast and clean! Which is admittedly not always what you want. This box won't replace most of my outboard gear, but It is a wonderful solution for what it is intended to do. And frankly, much to my surprise, it has taken over as my monitoring solution. I think this box punches WAY above its weight which is why I actually did a video about it. I am learning my way through this like the rest! I like to share info with other folks doing what we do!

@@JayFlemingMusic Thanks so much for the comprehensive reply. I just got the 2i2 version with air and see what the difference as. As I feel- either it suits my voice or I am just used to listening it. Do you think SSL2 might provide better source capture for post production. That is without the 4k because it isn't definitely something I will use. It is too airy for me.
@JayFlemingMusic
@JayFlemingMusic 4 жыл бұрын
@@theatifband I think that really comes down to your taste and what you feel works best for what you do. I dont have a 2i2 to put though it's paces so I hesitate to speculate. The SSL is definitely that "Rock" sound. The 4k can easily be too much depending on the voicing of the mic or source. Many microphones have that bump in the high end that can be over exaggerated by engaging the 4k.
@theatifband
@theatifband 4 жыл бұрын
@@JayFlemingMusic you're right. Just got a call from Sweetwater about my insight of SSL2. I told them I guess it's a matter of taste and what we have visualized in terms of final sound. I agreed that in isolation it's sounding sweet but in the end we have to see how sweetly it sits in the mix. As far as high end is concerned as much as I love your Lauten- I felt that hi-end in 4K part of this video too. Also I like the low punch and body pack of your voice without 4K and so I guess it all depends how we hear the sound. I like the throw and gain- but I have to put them through some rigorous testing. Sweetwater engineer is going to record some music and probably do a video- so that'll be fascinating. As much as I am a fan of Brit rock and sounds of Deep Purple, Queen and Led Zepp. I thought SSL2 was answer to my prayers. But let's see I have yet to engage the Air option of 2i2 in full scream mode of my voice.

Good question. I did this particular recording in an untreated kinda bad sounding room. I use polar patterns and some semi mobile absorbers that I built myself. Most of the time I find mic placement and selectable polar patterns are key for what I do. Honestly sometimes it still isn't adequate but the preamps are dead quiet so if I record at lower levels and boost in post it does not get super noisy like some other solutions I have used.

Hey RJB, Yes you can use outboard gear like other preamps, compressors , eq, and the like on the way in. You would simply make up you signal chain bring it into the line in on the unit. You engage the "line" button and get to work . It is very simple. One thing to keep in mind is connectivity for your signal chain prior to the SSL. Just wondering how you recorded your vocal without compressor/limiter on input.

I do usually have a comp on the front end just to control "some" of the peaks etc. This particular recording I used natural compression. In other words I employed better mic technical than I would normally. Since I knew there was no "brake pedal" if you will going in. I was super concious of the amplitude, proximity, etc. And simply did the same with my voice. On the occasion I record another vocalist and I don't have the luxury of a comp. I ride the preamp gain which is theoretically the same thing

@@milliondollascrilla7995 I suppose both could be true. It is very pronounced depending on the source and microphone. I have gotten good results from it in the right scenario. It is nothing like the "air" mode in another interface, nor is it like the "silk" mode of another preamp. But I find it useful.

What mic did you use for vocals?
@JayFlemingMusic

This particular one was the Lauren Atlantis. Phoenomimal mic! Pretty much every vocal you will hear from me will be the Lauren Atlantis, Lauren Oceanus, or Lauren LA-320. They are all stellar.

Does it support standalone mode? What kind of adaptor is required?

I am unsure if I comprehend completely but.... The interface is compatible with every DAW I have tried. The plugins are cross platform also. I have not attempted yet to use it as a "monitoring solution" on its own using the line in yet. When I do I will try and remember to let you know.

I haven't used MOTO for a long time but what Adam said makes sense. I tend to use different devices to acomplish different things. These are all just tools, and like all tools they work best fir different sutuations. Also VERY subjective.....

great song, man. love the soul in the singing. maybe a little more top end on that snare, a little hi-passing on the hi-hats, maybe a little ambience all around, and you've got yourself afull profi mix. i'd also feature the bass a little bit more, come to think about it. it's a shame to not have it push the song.

Hi Which interface do you usually use to compare the ssl2 with , I am looking to buy a new interface and was looking at the SSL2 and also some higher priced ones.. The vocals sound great thru those ssl preamps , Also did all the plugins you used come for free with the ssl2 or are they demos... Thanks

Hi Kenny, I use and have used several. Two most notable are the Focusrite Clarett and Audient ID22. To be clear there is nothing "wrong" with either of the other two mentioned. Both are more expensive and frankly "harder" to use. I compared a mix I had recently done on them and to my great surprise the SSL2 flat out smoked them "to my ears". I have a Radar Studio to do my primary recording device and is no comparison, nor was there any expectation that there would be. We all were super shocked at the sound quality coming out of a VERY budget friendly device. As stated in the video, I purchased this to do mobile video recording. However I now feel compelled to let go of my other desktop devices and use this exclusively. I hav never heard that kind of detail, clarity, and punch from ANY desktop interface including the lauded UA Apollo. And NO I have no affiliation what soever with SSL! I am not one for hype and I have not seen any other videos done by an actual individual to date so I wanted to do one.

@@JayFlemingMusic hey thank you for the reply , funnily enough the id22 and the Apollo are the other ones I have also been looking at and was trying to decide whether the Apollo was worth the extra , but if the SSL sounds that good I may as well save some money and go for the SSL , after looking at the SSL website the vocal strip and the drum strip sell for £129 each here in the UK so that is worth the money alone , it's great to see an individual testing it , I don't pay much attention to the marketing videos... Thanks again

id22 vs ssl2+ ? Whats is beter
@JayFlemingMusic
@JayFlemingMusic 4 жыл бұрын
To be clear I LOVE both. The clarity in the monitor section and headphone amp of the SSL "for me" is better. I can hear things I haven't heard on other devices like this. After running some tests to Check non linear performance I would say the SSL has the edge which is shocking if I were honest. Seriously not what I expected.

Do not buy Audient ID22. Any other Audient model is ok but not ID22 How they treat customers and their problems with ID22 does not convince me to this company. In the link below you have only ID22 customers - the problem has not been solved by Audient to this day. www.gearslutz.com/board/music-computers/1050068-audient-id22-issues.html
