My favorite reason to use rockets over planes for SSTOs is flight time. My leisure time is limited, so being able to have more launches in a play session is worth the extra fuel costs.

Most of the tips here also apply to every vertical rocket launch. If you're early career and don't have Vector, the first stage should still launch with TWR at 1.5 - 1.7, and throttle down to control gravity turn helps a lot.

just a quick correction on your speech about SSTO's realism, while we we might not have SABRE yet, ramjets and scramjets have been flown many many times on missiles before and allow for the speeds needed, of course they dont function at lower speeds but those can be covered by seperate jet engines or even rockets just to get them up to speed. Also as a craft suggestion you could do a Delta-Clipper style SSRT, where it would point nose first during reentry kinda like a lifting body, and then flip around for landing sorta like Starship
@vaos37122 жыл бұрын
Ahh but the ramjet and scramjet have been around since the 60s. It’s old tech, you would think they would’ve had an ssto out by now. So , if this isn’t the case, then it must not be powerful enough to make the ssto work. However, Elon musk said that starship could make it into orbit without the first super heavy stage, but only just barely. However just barely is a lot more than not at all or never like the ramjet or scramjet idea. Ramjet and scramjet are still good ideas but like I said before if that was the case we would’ve seen something by now.

@@vaos3712 rocket engines have existed for longer than that but we still havent had an SSRT either, the real thing holding back reusable vehicles like SSTO's is flight rate, the main advantage of SSTO/SSRT is that you are only dealing with a single stage, improving simplicity and reducing integration time and cost to only the payload. These are ideal for very high flight rates, however there simply arent enough payloads to justify them. Reuse is also expensive to develop and increases the fixed costs of a launch vehicle, for example Falcon 9 spent a billion dollars on developing it, this is also the reason almost all launch vehicles are expendable, there simply arent enough payloads for the rocket to fly so the increase in marginal cost of an expendable system becomes a worthwhile trade

@@vaos3712 There continue to be serious advancements in materials and manufacturing science that make ram/scram more viable. That said, Two Stage To Orbit rockets with landable first stages seem to be in the sweet spot for economics and payload fraction. I've tried SSTO spaceplanes in 2.7X KSP (27% reality) and they're HARD, even if you can get up to Mach 6 on airbreathing.
@vaos37122 жыл бұрын
@@cf453 ya , in Real solar system realism overhaul the only way I’ve made an ssto is by making it an SSRT. I think the max payload that I got was 21 tons. Not a lot but enough to build a space Station piece by piece. I think I might do that again.
@BillyOrBobbyOrSomethingАй бұрын
“Those can be covered by separate jet engines” Well that’s kind of the problem. Same idea as KSP- you solve one problem and create 3 more. The new problems are that your design is now heavier, less economically viable, less payload, more complicated and the type of engines you’re describing fit for this task do not exist in an easily-integrated way (yet at least). The advancements in materials science for this sort of thing to be practical are just too far off still 2y later.

Hi, My craft is Single-Stage-Engined, which means it dumps the excess fuel tanks to improve efficiency but not waste money. 600u for first stage to higher atmosphere 1400m/s, 600u fuel and oxidizer tiny Oscar-B tanks for second stage but it is still lands back as if it is single staged. It was only way to make actual exploring instead of messing around Kerbin with a fancy craft.

If you've got enough fuel in reentry, you can fire the engine to slow down so that your engine isn't burned away. (tl;dr: burn engine to prevent it overheating. ;)
