This show is for everyone, not just us anime nerds that are already Toku fans. I have to say this is honestly officially my second favorite anime of all time. I can definetly agree with all the points made in this video to SSSS.Gridman and how it a incredible letter to the genre in general. Stuff like Ultraman, PowerRangers, and Gamera are all well done with the usage of classic special effects and the rubber suits utilized in them. Most notably and especially Godzilla, with iconic and badass monsters such as Godzilla himself, King Ghidorah, Biollante and many many more. In general, this anime is very well executed and done with everything, from story, characters, kaiju action and the representation of the tokusatsu genre and the care it was given to many of its predecessors, especially iconics like Godzilla, Ultraman, Gamera, and Power Rangers. *Good Job with the video Mother’s Basement, incredible video in an anime that is now become one of my favorties. It probably won’t happen but I would honestly like to see a video about Kamen Rider Kuuga, if you ever did toku stuff. The show is essentially a police drama that deals with what it would be like if monsters actually attacked and how the police would deal with these threats. The titular Rider aids the police in their investigations, (similar to how Batman does) while also dealing with the possibility of his destructive powers turning him into the vary thing fights against.

The progression of powers that Kuuga gets is also amazingly well paced with imaginative uses and strategy behind them. In a particular episode, Kuuga struggles to invent a finishing move (to keep up with the developing monsters armor) while also battles the clock as his former mentor lost his passion and wishes to meet with him. He's torn between fighting off and saving people from the potential threat while also trying to save his mentor during his struggle. It's great stuff!
@iansmith17686 жыл бұрын
E- tan I recommend Kuuga because it feels like a classic Rider series while also not being too old.Neo Heisei Rider shows like Build have a lot of complex elements to them and a style that tries to reinvent the franchises established formula.These things aren’t bad by any means, however I wouldn’t recommend a show that deviates from the formula of a franchise they’ve never seen before.
@GurrenPrime6 жыл бұрын
Another thing that I think the Tokusatsu-inspired elements help out with is making the characters feel like they have real weight to their movement. As much as I love totally nonsensical giant robots doing impossible things, seeing Gridman and his enemies follow the laws of physics (to an extent) makes the fight scenes feel more real and helps them stand out from the competition.
@Markkzilla6 жыл бұрын
For sure when talking kaiju you definitely should do a video about the Heisei Gamera Trilogy. They are some of the best kaiju movies ever made and have anime connections like the fact that Shinji Higuchi was the director of special effects for all three movies. Also Kazunori Itô was a writer for all three movies. Godzilla is another but there is so many movies I’d say you should do the Godzilla series by era so first Showa era ( 1954 to 1975 ) , Heisei ( 1984 - 1995 ) Millennium era ( 1999 - 2004 ) When talking Ultraman I’d say just first do a video talking about its History, same with the Tsuburaya company as a whole. Including the master of monsters himself Eiji Tusburaya. Also a History video about Toho studios would be cool also.

Also if you love video games I'd definitely recommend Kamen Rider Ex-Aid, not only for the game themes but also the great story, interesting characters and of course the almighty ham that is Dan Kuroto.

Geoff, I love your videos, but there is a big problem in my opinion - by trying to keep up with the season and cover what people are currently watching, you are making videos that are much less complete than your videos on other stuff. Sure, it's nice to hear your first impressions, but I personally would much rather hear a more well based and academically inclined video on a show that's over or even from the past season than your hot take on some popular show. I really hope that you take this criticism to heart, because you are one of my favorite creators and I would like to see more quality content from you.
@judojon22166 жыл бұрын
I kinda disagree, at least in this instance. The thing is, even if Gridman was complete, had he made a video about this topic, his points would be the same. The subject doesn't have anything to do with the plot specifically, and if he were to do a deep dive into Gridman as a whole, he would have to kind of gloss over this aspect of the show to focus more on plot and character. While he could have gone deeper into the topic if he had been more familiar with Tokusatsu, I still found his take on Gridman's efforts to emulate live action toku interesting.
@studi0robb6 жыл бұрын
what judojon2216 says. Geoff talks in depth about the tokusatsu film making aspect of the monster-of-the-week, not the plot or series itself. why? because he's not out to spoil, but to show why he's enjoying the series. ( `_ゝ´)b yup
@attailavie56456 жыл бұрын
@@judojon2216 On the one hand you are right, and I kind of thought of that too while posting the comment, but on the other hand, doesn't this video feel like it should be a much shorter segment in a longer video that sums up the series as a whole? talking about how the series emulates effects from traditional tokusatsu shows is well and good, but shouldn't it be just a part of something that takes a broader look at the series and talks of its characters, story, and the messages that it's trying to get across? unless of course this is the only thing that the series has to offer, which I doubt (although I haven't personally seen it, so I can't confirm nor deny that), but if so, is it really worth talking about? and also, even if this video was relatively okay (which it definitely was, I did enjoy it, despite its flaws), Geoff's other recent videos are really not as good - his video on That Time I got Reincarnated As A Slime was pretty boring in my opinion, and I would argue that his video on Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai barely had a reason to exist at all, considering that all the stuff that he says in that video the shows basically says to your face.
@attailavie56456 жыл бұрын
@@judojon2216 And by the way, if he does have to cover recent stuff to appease the KZbin algorithm, which is fair, why would he not just cover Jojo part 5? there is so much to talk about in this season, starting with the color pallet, animation and amazing sound design all the way down to its OP and ED. It wouldn't feel out of place, since Jojo has been Geoff's thing for quite some time, and there is no reason to wait until the end of the series to cover most of the stuff since the manga already exists. And honestly, I would love a Jojo video that is not an encouragement for people to SKIP PARTS, GEOFF, YOU FUCKING DEGENERATE.
@attailavie56456 жыл бұрын
@@studi0robb What I said to judojun2216. The only reason not to wait for this show to end to make a video about it (and I don't think that spoilers are a concern here, since this is an original anime, or at least, not based on any relevant source material) is to ride on current trends, which is fair, but there are still ways to do it without compromising the quality of his content.

Take this into consideration. She was designed for that purpose. She was drawn for sexualization and the entire reason she's 16 on paper is simply because it makes her accessible to the target teen audience. It's no different than when they cast mid-20 to 30 year-olds as teens in live action shows. It allows them to do racier stuff, that is honestly a better representation of life as a teen, than if they actually put a kid there. It also allows adults to more easily insert themselves into and enjoy the whole fantasy of being a teen again. See for example, every teen coming of age movie riddled with 20-somethings or even the millions of romance novels where middle-aged women put themselves in the shoes of 16 year old maiden types. It's kind of the western inverse of sad middle-aged men living vicariously through boring light novel H.S. protagonists.

So first off, fantastic video. I've been a long time fan of tokusatsu and is why I absolutely love SSSS.GRIDMAN. That and I loved Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad as a kid. But if I would give tokusatsu's I always like to try and give the same answer, and usually sticking with one or two from certain series. So defiininetly the original Gridman show, it's a sweet family fun Ultraman style show, granted it is produced by Tsuburaya Productions. Now for Ultraman, I would recommend Ultraman Mebius. It's one of the most popular in the Ultra series, and also Ultraman Nexus. For Kamen Rider, you mentioned Gaim, which is a great choice and was my introduction into Kamen Rider. Build, W, and Drive are really up there as my favorite KR shows and really recommend those too. And of course I gotta say for Godzilla, there are many really good ones. If you'd like to see a more recent, do check out Shin-Godzilla if you haven't. But if you want some badass monster on monster action, Godzilla vs Biolantte, Godzilla vs Gigan, and Terror of Mechagodzilla. I hope I've provided some great examples, there is a lot of wonderful work within the legacy of tokusatsu that is just as rich and old as anime.
