How the hell does this video have so few views??? Why on earth is GunBuster so obscure? Why did it take me until 2023 to hear about it and watch it? Jesus Christ the world is so unfair. Amazing video thank you for keeping GunBuster alive.

Gunbuster is great, easily holds up today. Emotional impact, amazing art, highest of stakes. Still worth watching despite the underage fanservice and the teacher-student relationship.

Because if you were lucky enough to get in VHS which was the only way to see it in the UK back in the 90s it took me till last year to get it on Blu-ray I still have the VHS somewhere

For everyone watching this in the US, I wanted to let you all know that on May 30th, Discotek is going to be putting out their Blu-Ray set of Gunbuster! If you want to pick it up, here's a link: www.rightstufanime.com/Gunbuster-OVA-Series-Blu-ray. Just to be clear, Discotek is not sponsoring this video at all - I'm plugging them on my own accord because they're a fantastic company who put out extremely high quality releases at great prices. As with basically any other industry, it's always the little guys who wind up doing the best job.

Gunbuster was a formative anime for me, one of the first I ever saw, and it left an indelible imprint on me ever since. I love this show, and Diebuster too.

Amazing coverage of an amazing anime. Thank you. I’m glad to learn episode 6 being in black and white was an intentional decision. Now there’s no “what if” about it, we can all see it as it was meant to be seen.

As someone who was a passing fan of gainax I wanted to know more about them as a studio. . . This series has introduced me to so many new franchises I want to explore and see. Before watching this I watched gunbuster for myself and I can honestly say this show has made me so emotional, whether it be happiness, tears and everything in-between I wanna thank you for showing not just me but many people this masterpiece of a series and the legacy of gainax ❤❤❤

great (dare i say peak) commentary, u single-handedly convinced me of Gunbuster's drama elements in how much more sophisticated it is as a character portrait of Noriko and the existential tragedy underpinning it with the time dilation and it's effects on the scenario and cast interactions, I suppose I have to call myself a philistine now as I never realised the layers of depth my oversight has dismissed it as a "stupid mecha girl anime" for Gunbuster's relatively short runtime as a series and how accessible it seemingly was when i compare it to say, Serial Experiments Lain

Still remember watching this series in one sitting with you and David and Marty and just loving it. So happy it has been re-released! Also, as soon as I saw the Neo Yokio clip, I could just see you laughing and grinning at the fact that you were able to slip it into a video.

Here is lesser known lore between gunbuster and diebuster, like in 2048-2100: Next Generation Light Novel begins here Buster Machine 3 is built. Debate over whether or not to leave the earth begins. Gunbuster Episode 6. The half that want to leave earth do so, and colonize Sirius. Remnants of an alien civilization discovered. The 'Sirius Alliance' is formed and wants freedom from the overall Human Empire. Thanks to the ancient aliens they discovered Energy of the Spiri Sirius Alliance figures out how to weaponize it. They no longer need computers Earth refuses independence as they ran out of resources in the war with the Space Monsters, plans 'violent crackdown'. Earth starts with a tech and numbers advantage, but has no industrial capacity anymore. Presumably, they build Nono here, as the last weapon created on earth with pre-Sirius War tech. Sirius War begins. 2100-2480 Earth is losing war; both sides have undergone a massive tech slide. Jung Freud and the Eltrium Fleet come back the earth Empire tries to order them order them around but they overthrow the Earth Empire and establish a federation. Jung is elected president of Earth shes a called the hero of all humanity. clones of Kazumi Amano, Noriko Takaya, drive the sizzler against Sirius Alliance Ceasefire is called. Accepted. Mission to retrieve the Gunbuster is launched. Fails as humanity can no longer understand the pre-war tech to do so. Jung enters cryo sleep, a mass scramble to recover pre-war tech begins, s War restarts. 2480-14292 Sirius War has stalemated. Earth discovers an old Super-Excelion. Produces Two 'Werutoriumu' class ships based on it. Next Generation Manga begins here. The 'Great Attractor', a being claiming to be God, attacks the Sirius System. Begins drawing in all of the particles in the universe towards it. Jung reawakened, leads fleet consisting of the two Werutoriumus, and Buster Machines 4 and 5, built with pre-war tech, to fight it. Buster Machine 7 is not noted, as she wasn't thought up here. 6 doesn't show up for similar reasons. No one knows because manga and the light novels were canceled. Warp Tech sealed away at some point here Then Diebuster happens

Gunbuster is Haruhiko Mikimoto at his ow Zenit!! It is one of the best scifi anime ever. It is straight to the point and always with action and heart put on it!! What a masterpiece. And I like the fact that the time is giving this anime the respect and recognition it deserves.

I'm surprised you neglected to mention in your plot summary a detail about the ending's "welcome home" message: the final character is backwards. This implies that humanity has changed so much that it no longer understands Japanese, and yet despite that it has been determined for 12,000 years to deliver a hero's welcome.

A great video, really nice exploration of the themes and storytelling at play. I would have liked you to go more into two areas, though: - The "Science Lesson" shorts and how they interact with the main story - The critical/audience reaction to Gunbuster! Obviously in hindsight it was hugely influential, but how was it received in its time?

I rented Gunbuster in the early 90s from a comic book shop, and the pretty young girl behind the counter asked me why it was such a popular rental.. all I could think of at the time was "probably the boob physics."

I binged this in an afternoon in 2016, most likely a recommendation from you and David. Left me feeling like that image of Rich Evans on the couch with his beer. Was this with the new mic?

Oh I can almost guarantee it was either me or David who suggested it, haha. I've more or less recommended it to anyone who's interested in anime that I know. This one wasn't recorded with the new mic, since I didn't have the right cables yet. But David gave them to me at ACen last weekend, so I'm definitely gonna record the next one with it!
