That great play by "The Wizard" to Pendleton at 3rd base is why I say Ozzie is my favorite (and the best) shortstop of all time. This coming from a Twins fan. Boy you Cardinal fans were sure blessed to watch him play every day. Nothing like 80's baseball.

That play by Ozzie and Terry at third base tells you why the Cards during the Whitey Herzog era were so tough to beat. They were almost always among the top in the game when it came to defense.
@OldRustySteele Жыл бұрын
And so unlike the crapfest than Cards GM John Mozeliak has put together now. Our current team can’t bunt, can’t hit-and-run, play bad outfield defense, and can’t pitch. Mo Must Go.

This telecast was classic Mike Shannon (e.g., the Budweiser can, the fixation on the runner throwing his helmet). It gives you an idea of why he has been so loved in St. Louis for so many years.
@anthonybrancale48557 жыл бұрын
Terri henricks I can see why he is beloved, but I know a few play by play guys who would have eventually had it with him. lol. He would go on a stream of consciousness every time a ball was hit fair, often wondering how the play would end up. And he would don't this all the while talking over the other guy. That had to drive fellow broadcasters insane.

The audio is mostly from the St. Louis Cardinals telecast, but it occasionally switches to the Chicago Cubs version. The announcers for most of the video were Jay Randolph and Mike Shannon, but Jack Buck, Harry Caray and Steve Stone can also be heard.

Terri henricks ...and Dwayne Stats working with Stone earlyvin the game in the beginning. Dwayne would become and still is the Tampa Bay Rays announcer today.

CLASSIC 'Whitey-ball'. Run run run....base hits........ A Birds rally then was a walk, stolen base, sac bunt, then sac fly. They were FUN to watch. Turned baseball into a track meet. :)

Herzog's Cardinals with all that speed should have dominated the East, and won more than 3 pennants during the 80's. That team was built to make it to the playoffs yearly. Sure, you had the amazing Mets who challenged them, but the kind of defense the Cardinals supported with that speed? Pitching had to be a dream come true for any Cardinals pitcher back then knowing 99% of balls would be caught/fielded!

Yes, in Game 6. Umpire Don Denkinger called a runner safe at first, when he was clearly out on every replay, in the bottom of the 9th with the Cards leading 1-0. However, they had a few chances to get out of it but they were still fixated on the missed call and KC took off from there

The Cardinals-Cubs rivalry is an excellent MLB rivalry. But it would be a helluva lot better if they were good at the same time. The Cardinals have always been traditional winners. The Cubs until 20 years ago, were generally losers, or a mediocre team.
