Stölzel Passion (1720: Ein Lämmlein geht/Die leidende ... Liebe Jesu): Tenor aria (James Gilchrist)

This is the first aria from Stölzel's Passion setting 'Die leidende und am Creutz sterbende Liebe Jesu', composed in 1720 and subsequently performed in Leipzig by J S Bach. It is the original version, preserved in a set of parts in Sondershausen, rather than that in the 'Berlin' score which is available online.
We hope you agree that it's an absolute knock-out of an aria, performed here so expressively by Mark Baigent (oboe) and James Gilchrist (tenor). Sound recording is by Oscar Torres.

Ach! wo nehm ich Tränen her,
Meine Sünden zu beweinen?
Denn ach! denn es will fast scheinen,
Als fiel ihre Straf' und Pein,
Meinem Jesu selbst zu schwer.
Oh, why do I summon tears
to weep for my sins?
Because it almost seems
that their punishing pain
is too much, even for my Jesus.
