The hardest part about doing a DIY tour of the St Petersburg metro system is picking which stations to visit!
@travelingisfun19996 жыл бұрын
April and Tim Travel, hi! Just a little side note: metro in SPB is this deep only because the Neva river is deep, not because stations were intended to be used as bomb shelters. In Moscow there are stations which are literally times closer to the surface, but they still were used as bomb shelters. During the War almost any underground facility was used as a shelter.

The St. Petersburg metro was built at great depths, because the city was built on swamps and at low-lying stations there would be a high risk of flooding! Metro in the Soviet Union was built deep to avoid groundwater and vibrations of subway trains that shattered the walls of houses. As proof of this fact, I can say that the metro on the outskirts of Soviet cities were built at low depth, and the fourth line of the Moscow metro, built under Stalin, so in General was ground. The first underground of the country, for example, was opened under Stalin in 1935 in Moscow. Then nuclear weapons and in speak of not was.

Russian metro not only clean and beautiful but also very cheap (one ride cost you from 50c to 1$ depending on payment method and the city you are in) and efficient (duration between trains is usually only 3 minutes). Considering the scale of such large cities as Moscow (12mil people) and Saint-Petersburg (5mil) it is one of the greatest public transportation systems in the whole world.

sometimes when i come to Moscow by car i prefer to leave it on the outskirts of Moscow and travel on metro. its hell of a lot faster than sitting in traffic jams especially when you have to visit several locations and you have a nice weather. i wish we have such efficient public transportation sisten in our town!!!

I just returned from visiting St. Petersburg and Moscow. It was my very first trip to Russia and it was so amazing. I do agree with you regarding the metro and every station is very unique in its own rights. I was using lines 3 and 5. I must say it's marvelous engineering and architecture in my humble opinion. For the first time when I took the escalator deep down to the station, I was so taken by it. So many lines interconnecting and parrel stations from above. Super clean, well maintained, and easy access to any part of the city. Also very safe to walk around any time of day or night. Overall I had a great and positive experience. You have to be there to experience these two awesome cities. I will be visiting soon to explore different cities God willing. Readers may God Bless you and keep you safe.

People rarely notice just how much of an effect a beautiful Metro has on them but you just have to live for a month in some other city with a more utilitarian metro system to notice the difference. Avtovo was built ‘when it was USSR’ too. Every metro system in modern Russia was formed during USSR era (except Kazan). The thing is the only person in USSR who thought that metro stations should look like palaces was Joseph Stalin, so after he passed away Nikita Khrushchev cut off all ‘architectural excesses’ out of construction budgets. Main reason why almost all stations are so deep is the boggy ground, so constructors needed to go deep to reach solid clay layers. This makes every station few times more expensive to build, but modern technology allows to avoid such problems in most cases (see Novokrestovskaya for example).

To visit Russia and not to try the traditional Russian dishes - it's like not to be in Russia. By the way vegetarian and vegan cafes and restaurants are mainly created for tourists. In Russia, there are almost no vegetarians and vegans, because we need a dense diet, proteins and carbohydrates, fats in winter. If Russians were vegetarians, Russia would starve. Because we do not grow a lot of vegetables (except for the Chernozemye regions). From traditional Russian dishes I recommend to try okroshka (cold soup of kvass, Yes Yes, it exists, and it is worth trying, it is very tasty, it is prepared in the summer) with fried potatoes, borsch, shchi, sorrel soup with meat (sorrel soup is very tasty, despite the fact that sorrel is a plant that can cause itching on the skin), dumplings, manty (the same as dumplings, but more and with a different taste), fish and potatoes (herring with potatoes), salad "Herring under a fur coat" - "Seld pod shuboy" and sandwiches with red caviar, which we eat for the New year.

@AlxndrKplnsky6 жыл бұрын
Max Bolsen :)
@AlxndrKplnsky6 жыл бұрын

@Mr_Twister776 жыл бұрын
@rohl19796 жыл бұрын
@Mr_Twister776 жыл бұрын
@Mr_Twister776 жыл бұрын
