I feel like one's White Nights experience depends a lot of the colors they choose or the sets they get prefab. They definitely have some odd balls, opaques, low lightfastness etc. But the mostly transparent, lightfastness colors I picked out for myself have been delightful to work with personally. Maybe I went in with such low expectations that they really surprised me but I have no issues with what they are whatsoever. My custom set of 14 FULL pans was $30 and when I compare that to other sets I can get for $30 there's no contest at all. I'd rather use them than any other student grade paint I've ever tried, and I feel more comfortable traveling with them than my professional paints because I didn't pay a crap ton for them haha. Are they as good as my beloved Daniel Smith or MGraham? Of course not, but I still really like them :)

I found the translucent paints really pretty but i like wc like that, cadmiums are not my thing, if i want opaque i'll rather use gouache. the only colors that don't make sence to me are their cadmium yellows : they indeed feel off its like i used soap instead of paint and its all grainy greacy and bubbely. Those are the only colors in the set i do not use.

Yeah, I think a lot of it has to come down to your own preferences. While you came into it with really low expectations, I came into it with higher expectations because I heard a lot of people saying that they were amazing and they bill themselves as artist grade pants. When I used them, I definitely didn’t feel that they behaved like artist grade paints and so that was pretty disappointing. The price value ratio is totally on point! So I can see that working out if you want more paints, but I’d rather have a triad of other paints than a larger set of these. I’ve never bought a set of these and I’ve chosen mostly single pigment colors, but each time I buy them I end up spending twice as much because I replace them with another brand. 😢 I don’t like to sketch with a different quality or brand than I normally work with, so that’s also not an appeal for me. 😆 It all just goes down to your preferences!

@@SadieSavestheDay interesting! I felt they really did perform so much better than any non-professional grade out there and would put them lower down on professional, but professional for sure. I wonder if the colors really do make a difference. The only colors I don't feel handle well out of the 14 I have are the phthalo green and the volenz. black. If it helps, I'm running ligjtfastness tests so at least I'll be able to answer that part soonish!

The way you are talking about these is how I feel about winsor and newton, which in my opinion always lack luster. I personally have 48 white nights paints, I love them. I also have Daniel smith, m Graham and winsor and newton, but reach for my white nights almost always. The green you are talking about is pg8 Russian green. It is rated 2/3 lightfastness, but a lot of people have tested it, including me and it doesn't budge in direct sunlight for months. I have to say the colors you chose other than the ultramarine, I would not choose as a triad from their line. They have some really amazing reds and blues, particularly the pay load of the cobalt colors... amazing.

I don't paint professionally, and have only been watercolor painting for about a year, but I have to say that I really love these paints. When i started learning I got a set of Cotman and a set of Sakura Koi. As I realized I love watercolor painting, I started buying Artist grade paints, usually in started sets. My first buy was a set of Turner Artist 18 tubes on sale for about $20 USD. Then I started shopping around for more. I got the Daniel Smith Essentials, Mission Gold 24 tubes, the White Nights 36 pans, Qor High Chroma, and some individual tubes of M Graham and Sennelier. I know that sounds like a lot, but I got almost all of them on sale, and it has given me a really good sampling of psaints. I think I like my Daniel Smith, M Graham and Mission Gold paints the best, but for studies and sketchbook work, I find myself reaching for my White Nights set, because they were such a bargain, that I don't feel like I have to "save" them, or use them sparingly, which I find very freeing. I love your painting. I love watching you paint, an r I have started using your two brush technique, which I think is Brilliant!! I also love watching you mix and glaze! I can't get over the range of colors you got out of those 3 primaries. I really need to spend more time stretching myself to experiment and mix more

I guess these are also not appealing for me because I don’t like to use different paints for sketching as opposed to finish work, so I don’t really have a place for them in my collection. Playing with a limited palette is so much fun and really helps to widen your mixing abilities!

I've bought mine open stock, a few at a time when visit a particular art shop in southern Spain. I now have fifteen. I have all lightfast colours so my collection is a rather different from the sets available and I absolutely love them. I have Sennelier and a few Maimeri Blu watercolour which are very different to the White Nights but I reach for White Nights because I like the way they mix. Perhaps it's not fair to compare them with the likes of Sennelier but I would use my lightfast- and mainly single pigment - collection for art for the wall. My favourite paper to use with White Nights is Khadi rough. We all have our favourites. It would be boring if we all liked the same. There would be no lively debates!

Variety is the spice of life! I’ve only ever tried them open stock, so I can’t comment on the sets. It’s always great to find what works for you! I’ve tried a lot of colors since I recorded this review. Personally I didn’t like how they mix and I have given away most of the pans I have gotten. What makes them different from Sennelier and Maimeri Blu for you?
@shallremainnameless1998

Sadie Saves the Day It's probably down to my colour choices in the White Nights range. I have the red you demonstrate in the video which reminds me of Alizarin Crimson but is lightfast and Ruby. Instead of Ultramarine I chose Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue and Indanthrene Blue as I don't have those in other paints. For greens I chose Russian Green (PG8) and Oxide of Chromium. My yellows are Cadmium Yellow Medium and Indian Yellow and a bunch of earth tones. In fact I'm going shopping today for a couple more pans. Will probably get Quinacridone Rose. I have that pigment in Maimeri Blu but I could use a pink tone in White Nights. Then I'll have to go to buy a tin to put them in.

I honestly love these watercolors because of how pigmented they are upfront! I also think I'm just a sucker for whole pans to begin with as well, so that's a plus. I do agree that there's something about them that doesn't make me personally want to use them in at least commissions or originals that planned to be sold. But for works that are planned more for things like prints, or even just wanting to do more for practice, I really do enjoy them for what they're worth. This was a great review and I think it will help a lot of people who view it and aren't sure about them will have a handful of their questions answered from this video alone!

These plums look yummy and beautiful. I love how you built the layers and depth in both halves. I started with a 36 set of White Nights and then slowly bought more colours, because I really got good results with them. I decided to buy only single pigment colours when I decided to expand my set, and it was a good decision. I have moren control over the mixes -something difficult when a colojr has 3 pigments. I like their range and that they are very pigmented, reset easily and are very smooth. They mix well and I can create many colours with a few.mi created many triads with them. Because I like big brushes, having full pans is a plus. The labels offer pigment info and the website has a colour chart with their full range. I use them A LOT - and because they don't cost much, I have no fear of using them to play around, made new and sometimes strange experiments or colour combos. I can easily compare them to any of the big brand names in terms of what I can do with them. I love their PV 19 and PR122 magentas and purples, they create amazing mixtures with blues. I am not a big fsn of earth colours so I don't use them as much, and so cannot really complain. Thanks for reviewing them, hope you don't get discouraged to keep on experimenting.

Strange, i should have watched this video when it aired, i love my White Nights! But! Those exact colors are not my favorite for mixing. However, something like Cyan, Yellow and Magenta triad works great with them. I also find that most colors that i use i had to buy open stock. If you have a chance sometime, maybe try Bright Blue, Hansa Yellow and Quin Red or Quin Rose as a triad. That's just my preference though.

I don’t know the technical name for it when you subconsciously devalue something because it’s cost is low, But I do think that there is a lot of that going on with the white nights paints. People talk about the elusive some thing Schmincke has I always think that elusive some thing has to do with cost and preciousness. Other than that your plums are glorious and I absolutely appreciate your evaluation.

Schmincke is not expensive where I live, and it’s actually harder for me to acquire White Nights paints. Based on this, Daniel Smith, for example, should be my favorite paints since they are crazy expensive here. They are not.

PG8 is the gorgeous green that you mentioned, and it is indeed beautiful and unique! I agree that something about White Nights feels sub-professional, but I love working with them. Out of my collection of paints which includes Daniel Smith, DaVinci, White Nights, Sonnet, and Van Gogh, I find myself reaching for the Nevskaya Palitra paints (White Nights and Sonnet) and the Van Gogh paints for most of my practice work and some of my finished work. There is something about the vibrancy, layering and texture of these paints that I love more than my higher quality paints that I can't fully explain! It is truly about personal preference according to how you work.

I use these and love them on the whole. I get you on the earth pigments, some of them are quite awkward (that three-pigment raw umber... :/) but I've just about used up my pan of burnt sienna and I'm sad to see it go because I think it's so rich and beautiful. For me, they fit in nicely with my other artist grade paints. I don't think I'll repurchase any colors because the full pan format is too limiting, but it's great to be able to get pigments that are usually off limits to students like cadmiums and cobalts at this kind of price. And your painting turned out gorgeous in spite of this brand not really working for you!

Madder Lake Red Light and Ultramarine are some of my favorites out of all the ones i swatched. I think I know what you are talking about when you said that they don’t feel that artist grade... the have some properties that make them feel a bit harder to work with, and my main point when it comes to artist grade is that they work easily so I can focus on the painting c: What I personally found is that they mix a bit weird, and layer not as beautiful, it’s always that the first two colors and layers go down well, but after that it’s a bit muddy, a little fuzzy. I don’t know, they do a good job in my primary mini pallete, and I would say they are truly fine.

Oh man, I love White Nights! I'm kinda sad you don't like them much but then again I haven't tried a bunch of brands to compare. I can tell tho, they do look a little bit dull sometimes and indeed, their burnt sienna is very very meek. I think the hype definitely comes out because of what you get for the price. Btw that one Russian green is very beautiful! I don't mind lightfastness that much because most of my work gets scanned(Unless it's a color like Opera which looks so crappy on pc/reprinted)Finally, I didn't know people were getting sand in their paints lol. I got one pan with a suspicious white powder I'm guessing is to avoid stickiness but that was a HUGE patch of white powder haha.

Well, I don't know why, but I prefer White Nights over most other brands ("most other" meaning Winsor & Newton and Schmincke, since that is what I can easily get where I live). There are a few colours/pigments that they don't have or didn't have in the past, which I had to get from other brands, but most of my palette is White Nights. I have a feeling that White Nights polarize more than other brands for some reason - either you really love them, or you don't care for them at all. Oh, I probably should add that I only use their single-pigment-paints for the most part though.

I do know what you're talking about and it's hard to put a finger on it. I thinks it's the flow. They seem to have zero flow so when you're doing wet in wet the colors don't mix and mingle, they have to be coaxed, ruining the whole point. They just don't seem to mix well on the paper. First edit: I seem to get weird edges as well. Go figure. But that's my take. Second edit: I wanted to love these paints because of the price point, but I don't. And I think you should experiment with them a little to see if you like watercolors if you do then next I'd recommend van Gogh (a lot of artists recommend W&N cotman but van Gogh is better quality for lesser or same price) and then I'd suggest white nights as your first professional watercolor and then maybe Daniel Smith's essential set if you feel ready for higher end professional brands but mission gold, m grahm and sennilier are great choices too! Yeah, when I did my review I pretty much came to the same conclusions about them. They’re good enough, but I don’t really care for them more than any of my other paints. Mostly, they’re innoffensive and I pretty much said that if they’re affordable for you and you need to get some paints to start with and grow with, but there’s nothing about them that makes me love them. You’re totally right about missing the oomph, in my opinion. Also, AFTER I did my review, someone else said that they actually aren’t as lightfast as you’d expect from artist grade, or even from their own ratings. I want to do a lightfastness test to prove or disprove, but lord knows unless I do it while I’m thinking about it right now, it’s probably not going to happen. =>.

IMHO the desire of people to buy paints of a particular brand depends on fashion. Everyone ran - and I ran too)) A couple of years ago in Russia, artists bought Daniel Smith without exception, then came the fashion for Mijello, Kuretake, Winzor & Newton, awful Sakura and more. And yet, those who started with White Nights never (really, never) completely refuses to work with these colors, even if they say the opposite. White Nights have unmatched sepia, amazing cobalts, indigo, shining quinacridones, Shakhnazar red ocher, beautiful Indian yellow and golden, and the best raw sienna (I compared ut with DS, Old Holland, Sennelier, Mijello and many other brands). Most paints are single-pigmented. By the way, I am surprised that these paints in cuvettes are preferred abroad. In Russia, there is a firm belief that White Nights in tubes are of higher quality ;)) As for light fastness, the question arises here: how honest are paint manufacturers in principle? In Russia, there is a well-known saying: a bad word is written on the shed, but there are firewood inside the shed )))))) How light-resistant this or that paint can be found out only if you yourself place it for six months under direct sunlight.

When I did direct comparison pigment to pigment with my Schmincke I noticed a difference in quality on paper and in the pan. But being a beginner I was happy to start out with them to learn color mixing. I should have waited to buy Schmincke Horadam until much more practice. Now I know these I can still learn from and they were affordable. If you get a chance to try out Jacksons Art watercolors I would love to hear your opinion. Thank you for your hard work. I think these can be totally fine to learn a bit on. 😆 I’m a bit of a weirdo and I just did not want to use student grade paints even in the beginning, because of the quality difference. But for sure they are a super affordable price. I am curious about those. Aren’t they rumored to be rebranded Sennelier paints?

Sadie Saves the Day I understand totally. I am also that way with the watercolor paper. Even though I am a beginner I order all my paper from Jackson's. I didn't know that rumor about rebranded paint. I do have one tube of Ultram. B in Sennelier and in Jackson's. (Because I have an obsession with blues. 😅) they are similar in texture. I got the 10 ml tube when they had the sale. Very very affordable. Have a great day!

Kelly Lester I stopped looking for a bright warm yellow after I got Jackson's one but I would try sennelier's py154 py153 mix or the new reformulated version.

I have the set of 36... jeaah :P i love those paints :) and though you are right mixing wise: you cant have it all for that price, so I suspect there are not much single pigments on that list - so i suspect there is an additive used - and even if there is one on it. I know what you mean with the the Oompf: I dont use them on detailed work: that honor falls on my senneliers. However since I need to practice that is what I grab for. So these are the paints you will pretty much find in my entire sketchbook hehehe. I dont feel all guilty when a painting goes to sour using these cause well thats what these are, practice paints :P I think the hype is in the price. There are a lot of us who cant afford higher end materials specially when you are just starting. That is why I do reccomend them for beginners and folks on a budget like me: know the paints first and get more selective going upwards in supplies.

Yeah, I think I would have a different opinion on these if I hadn’t heard all of the rave reviews saying that they were artist great pains. Seeing them as student great pains, I think that they are amazing. And I would definitely recommend them over other student grade paints because they operate more similarly to artist great pains. But seeing them as artist grade paints, they definitely don’t live up to the task for me.

I bought two 24 sets of this brand several years ago, when I first started working with watercolor. I have mixed feelings about them. The excess packaging with the individually wrapped pans is annoying. The wrapping stuck to a lot of the paint. Everything sticks to the paint. I’m always picking cat fur out of the pans. And while some of the colors are almost too bright, many dry very flat. So I understand what you mean when you say something is just “off” with the brand. Plus, the pans aren’t labeled. I made color charts when I got them, but not being the most organized person on the planet, I’ve long since misplaced them and have some shades that I have absolutely no idea what they are. Mostly, I use these for playing around, crafty stuff like making my own greeting cards, etc. I think they are considered to be artist grade, and I see a lot of artists I admire using them - but for me, they just don’t perform like my other artist grade brands,

Thanks for this review. I'm a beginner at watercolor and have been painting with white nights for couple months. I agree that these paints lack life. I thought it was my inexperience but decided to buy a couple tubes of Sennelier and now my portraits have the luminosity I've craved. Thanks again for being yourself and I really love your videos.

I’m so happy you saw your experience in this review. I know when you are just starting out it can be so hard to tell if it is you or the paints. I am generally not a proponent of blaming your tools, but different tools have different properties, and luminosity just isn’t something that these paints have. I’m glad to hear that you are happy with Sennelier! They are great line.

Thanks for the review Sadie! I love the plums, they look delicious! I have made a split primary + 2 earth colors + the green palette of white nights, and my first impression was that I don't like their consistency! They are so gooey and thick.. I am trying them a bit more using thinner washes and layering. I think that they lack the glow or depth of other brands. All in all I agree with you, it would have been an amazing brand to have when starting out, because they actually behave like watercolors and are much better that most other student grade supplies. But once I have tried higher quality paints, like the mission gold, sennelier and schmincke I don't enjoy them as much.

I have had a set of white nites, for about 25 years. They used to be only sold in ads in watercolor magazines for about $25. Having said that, I rarely use them. (D.Smith and Schmincke are my favs) some of the colors like Ultramarine are rich in color and easily rewet. The earth tones, another matter. I could spray them down on the hour for a week and they remain hard as rocks. I also question the validity of their light fastness. ( just a feeling). Nice review Sadie
@SadieSavestheDay

The ultramarine is for sure one of the nicer colors from this line. They mostly reset pretty well but I don’t know what’s up with the earth colors at all! Id like to do a lightfastness year when I get around to it!

Your painting is, as usual, just a delight to watch being created, I think there are s few very prominent You- Tubers that beginners listen to, as Oracles..Been there, done that. I bought the very same paper, brushes and paints as 'my hero'. I think that's ONE of the ways we learn. So when an admired person ooos and ahhhs about something, many of us want to run out and get it. Esp if it's inexpensive! White Nights/Yarka's colors DO stay moist and ARE beautiful to see. But as far as many of their earth tones people say yucck! Typical varied reactions, no big deal. But it's hard to contradict a leader (respected in the community) in your field, or hold a different point of view. Sorry for the dense, unintelligible Letter. My insomnia has been terrible this week, and the 'Dawn Chorus' started 45 min ago. The signal for the failure of sleep, yet again.

I love these paints, but I'm not an artist. As someone who's just learning how to paint, having access to such high quality paints for such a low price has been, and continues to be amazing. Instead of being stuck to a limited amount of colours that I feel bad every time I touch, I can have ALL the colours, find what I love, and use as much as I like. Now if someone could make cheap high quality paper....

I exactly know what you mean!!! I had been looking for these paints for sooo long and couldn’t get it where I live, so I ordered it from amazon. I had such high hopes for them! And then...the colors react totally different to what I know. A staining, non-granulating ultramarine...it is like I have to learn the colors all over again. Although they are very vibrant!

I totally get what you ment with your review, I like them but I don't go out of my way to use them. They remind me soooo much of my honey 'water' colours my friend brought me from russia (which were like 1 € xD) and they're also great but eh...I really dont like how they activate and how sticky?! they sort of are. They are great though which is why I'd like to kick myself in the butt XD actually check out 'KhaosKai' he colours all of his artworks in whiteknights mostly and he does AMAZING work

Oh that’s really interesting. I’m curious about those 1€ watercolors! They are surprisingly sticky. But I guess that’s because of the honey, like M Graham. Thank you for the suggestion! I checked him out, and I think it just confirms how I feel about White Nights. He is obviously skilled at using watercolor, but his paintings are missing a luminosity that I like in watercolors.
