The fact that their sets come in FULL pans while not including a white makes them such an attractive buy. And they're priced so cheaply, they're closer in price to student paints here! Thanks so much for the awesome review

They really are pretty good paints, especially when you consider the price Definitely a good buy,. I have 45 of their colors now, and I love them. Some are not *that* great, but then again, *every* brand had a couple of shades where you ask yourself what they were thinking when they made those. The Raw Sienna is changed to a single pigment color now, btw. I just checked mine that I purchsed a couple of months ago, and it is only P Brown 7 and it is lovely.

Thank you for this review. I think you are the first one to give this brand the credit it deserves. Living in Romania the other brands are hard to obtain. I did buy some Winsor and Newton and I was under the impression the quality is comparable. So thanks for confirming that to me.

I have such a limited selection that it's hard to say overall about the brand, but from this selection, I'd say they're very comparable. I'll run some lightfastness tests which will take a while, but I'll of course share them when the time comes. I'm glad that I was able to try them out, because I admit from what I had heard from others, I wasn't super excited to try them out. Im glad I was wrong :)

The russian green (pg8) is something otherworldly. Such a beautiful colour. I have 25+ years old St.Petersburg watercolor paint set (past version of White Night's) and that green is amazing and perform well at light fastness. Actually on 40+ years old school grade watercolor set from Soviet times visually the same pg8 green (I believe it is the same pigment) still have that earthy, fully green properties. And yes, for those who wonders - those old russian color sets are very good at revetting and everything. As good as brand new White Nights. About that Emerald green. Looks like fluke. In my sets that is strong and rich and doesn't have revetting problems.

For the pans where the color is harder to pick up, you may want to "scrub" the top layer off the pan color. Because for me when this issue happened it ended up being that there was paper residue from the packaging that was creating a flim/barrier on the paint pan. After I scrubbed the initial layer off on the problematic pans, the colors were really pigmented and easy to pick up.

Two things I've learned about this paint: 1. It needs to be used on textured paper. I tried to do a dog portrait commission on Arches hot press paper, and the results were gritty and disappointing. My second try on Arches cold press was dramatically better. 2. Several colors are super prone to fading. The reason that gorgeous deep green is so unusual is because the pigment PG8 will fade quickly when exposed to sunlight, and so other companies avoid it. This is also true for the violet, which contains PV3, which is also highly toxic. I enjoy using this paint, but I will be extra careful to not use it for commissions in the future, and will keep my beverages far from my painting table.

I'm not sure but I guess of the physical color ? I mean like yellow is gonna be transparent compared to red which will be opaque, I bought the set but still didnt try it out. I realized the bottom of the box there are the color names next to them ( stars) and ( full, empty and half full) box which explain if they are opaque or transparent and how lightfastness they are.

Great video. I have been using these paints for a couple of years now, just the 12 color set, and have been very satisfied with them and with the way they mix. They last a long time as well. One thing I wanted to mention is that I noticed that at the end of your peacock painting, you used Dr. PH Martin's white. Instead of gouache white, I have started using a white I get from a block of Derwent's Inktense white, which is very opaque, easy to use since it comes as a block and best of all, once it dries, it is permanent and you can paint over it with a colored glaze and it won't pick up. I learned this from Lisa from Lachri. I have been working on a painting of a model whom I am depicting as Hera (the goddess whose symbol is the peacock) and have finished it except for the peacock, so now I am inspired to finish the peacock!

These were the first watercolors I ever bought for myself. I still really love them, especially what they offer in terms of a chance to start out using artist grade pigments at a student grade price, so I'm happy to see you enjoyed working with them and created such a gorgeous piece using these paints. And Blick does have them open stock! My favorite color from them is Titian red, very similar hue to DS quin sienna but single pigment. :) I also thought the PB60 came off weak when I was first using it, but after experimenting with stronger versions I ended up appreciating that glazing quality and ability to build up rich color slowly. I do think they fit in that Sennelier and W&N realm of more "gentle" watercolors.
@InLiquidColor
@InLiquidColor 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Caitlin! I see Blick has the Yarka for a bit of a steeper price, although I have to admit the transparent pans really bother me for some reason, though I'm not sure why! Good to know they're around though :) I agree that they're more gentle, but they all seem to glaze very well, as do the others you mentioned, so it'll be fun getting to know them.

I got the 24 pan set 2 years ago, when I started getting serious about watercolor. I really like them and they were very inexpensive (I live in Germany). They are a little more expensive now, but still very affordable (when compared to other artists' quality paints --- Schmincke and Lucas, for instance). I've ordered some Daniel Smith and am anxiously awaiting their arrival. I think you end up finding colors that you love (regardless of brand) and mixing and matching.

It was less than 65 dollars...Plus free shipping I ordered mine at midnight on Friday and I got them today ( Monday ) at 10am. I’m so excited to use these my first set of watercolors was 10 w&n cotman tubes. I like them but as a beginner with the medium I purchased this pan set as I figured owning g a pan set would allow me to be more spontaneous with my art. After months of research I went for white nights as it’s the most affordable artist grade water color on the market that seems well liked across many different artists with a range of styles and subjects that they like to paint.

I think I lucked out with these. I was in Sweden this Christmas and nabbed the 24 set for about 18 USD at an art store during a post-holiday sale. They also had the Schminke 12-tube set for 40 USD, but I didn't nab it ;_; Supply availability overseas is really interesting. Only one store in the whole city sold Daniel Smith and they were 30 bucks a tube. Wonderful review again. I love your encyclopediac comprehension of every set you review. Oddly enough, your channel has both fueled and curbed my watercolor addiction. Fueled because I love your work and the effort you put into building knowedlge over this medium, and curbed because I'm finally realizing that it's best to build my collection around what I need for my own personal artistic endeavors and not necessarily what I want because of the pretty colors.

I have only been to Hungary since I started watercoloring, and they only had Royal Talens at that particular art shop - I was really surprised they didn't have White Nights! I wanted a set of these for a long time, and I did some research about them, and there seems to be some agreement that White Nights and Yarka St Petersburg are the same company, just marketed in a different area of the world. Dick Blick carries them under this name, as sets and open stock, though not that cheap. I got the set of 36 and love them. Most surprising to me was how transparent they are. Didn't expect that. Love your peacock. We are "almost" neighbors, I live in San Rafael, CA. Learning so much from you about pigments. Love your channel!

I have the 24-pan set. This is usually sold out according to "Deovir" (an art store here in Manila, Ph). We can buy it here for about 2usd +++ per full pan depending on color. I like this paint as it is much cheaper than the other artist grade paints. The colors are all pigmented but I encountered an issue with ceruleum blue. The paint spilled into my other pans (I made sure it has no water on it) when I closed that big box.

I know this is a really old video by now but the emerald green (I'm just swatching my set that I put together out right now) this one I have really wet easily and mine looks a lot deeper, I wonder if something has changed or maybe you unfortunately got an off pan? I really like this color it's very vibrant. I got a set of 24 on amazon and then supplemented with open stock from jacksons. I have to add though that my palette was slightly off. Instead of receiving orange lake i got titian red and instead of getting blue i got bright blue (or so the wrapper said) because the pan was actually blue lake 😆 Other than that I'm really happy with it. Had i known i wouldn't be able to smoosh my 4 half pans of m graham paint into the palette I would have just picked out 2 more full white nights pans. Now I'm sitting here with a 36 palette with 34 colors and oh my god it's really bothering me 😂

that’s weird, my White Nights raw sienna is PBr7 only 🤔 and my emerald green picks up really easily, or I’m just used to something else, haha I’m so happy you finally tried them out and liked them!! I need to get some of the quinacridone colours some time soon, I’m in need of some cool reds and the ones you got are on my list :D thinking about the indian yellow too, as I love Rembrandt’s Aureoline made with PY150 too. Now I’m just going to stare at your painting for at least five minutes because it’s so beautiful.

In Liquid Color you’re welcome! some time ago (2-3 years??) Nevskaya Palitra changed their pans from transparent soft plastic to harder white plastic (found it somewhere on their instagram, I got a few of the older ones open-stock and I had to find out, haha) and I’ve been looking at their charts and social media profiles for at least 1,5 year and this pigment combination you got is odd, there’s nothing even similar to this on their website (and they have been updating the chart regularly) and you did get the new pan. Are these pigment numbers on the packaging? You could message Nevskaya Palitra on Instagram about it, since their online colour chart says Raw Sienna is single pigment (and I think they should reply in English with no problems). Just an idea. Now I’m curious how this happened 🤔

Congratulations to successful delivery! ^.^ glad you enjoy the paints so much :) that hard to rewet thing about PG7 is weird, mine rewets like breeze... Half of my palette contains these paints, sadly white nights lack a bit in warm spectrum... Yellows, oranges and warm reds. But the rest is quite nice :) My raw sienna is made with just PBr7... It's raw umber that is multiple mix here. As for gramulation, can say it don't granulate much, albeit ultrmarine showed some settling out of the wash, earth tones (sienna/umber) too... But compared to Daniel Smith.... Feels not granulating at all :D or I'm too spoiled by TRO and TBO ultimate granulating combo :D Thanks for this review! ^.^ it's nice to see these side by side with big brands ^.^ P.S. SAA paints from UK have whole selection of plans available. The colors released for 2017 are hard to find even in Europe, but SAA has them. Jackson's have the usual selection minus new colors available open stock too :)

@calamityjitt667
@calamityjitt667 6 жыл бұрын
In Liquid Color they are either opaque(ish) or fugitive or mix with fugitive pigment. Or your "favorite" cadmiums :) PY3 is quite on the opaque side here, like PO62 golden deep. Titian red PO36 is nice though. Cadmiums are what they are (PY35 and PR108 respectively), and the rest is fugitive (golden contains fugitive PO17, hanza yellow is PY1, also fugitive, scarlet is mixture of fugitive PR2 and PR4, don't have Ruby, but I think it's not lightfast pigment either.... And list goes on). Artiscreation.com is awesome source of pigment info right after handprint. Indian yellow PY150 was released as new color in 2017, just like quin red, so it improved the range a bit. :)

I was just going to post these suppliers. Both deliver internationally and the prices are great, they also can be dound on either ebay or amazon for those who prefer paypal. I am so impressed with white nights, they really compare well with other brands with just one or two exceptions and I believe they are fixing those. One of them was I think a quite fugitive lemon. If you research them then there are other vloggers who have done the light fast tests. Compared to what was available even 40 years ago they are great, go back a hundred and most colours were not that great. I have quite a lot of other brands, but if WN take my fancy to use and the work turns out well then I Would not consider them inferior, paper is just as important in them lasting, and in any case who is to know how long work will survive, I do not make it for that but to enjoy the making and hope someone will enjoy having the end result. I will confess though, I am more an art as gift kind of person than art as business.

First than nothing , amazing video as always I really appreciate all that info and insights you put out there, keep it up. And second, around a month ago or something I bought 1 set of koh I noor portrait watercolors, 24 full pans for around 50 bucks, a bargain I thought and so is because quality really sucks at least as far as it goes for packaging/presentation. the thing here is I couldn't find any info on internet about the brand or the paints but yours in this video looks exactly similar to mine and I was wondering if they may be someway related, just a rebrand or something for Mexico... I really got that disappointed with the overall presentation of my watercolors that tough I have tried some colors I had barely touched them and know I shouldn't judge them for how they look, but its just that my schminkes are so beautiful that I don't feel the same way playing with the koh i not like with the schminckes. I will give them a second chance and hope you understand my broken english and find this somewhat interesting. PD. have you tried the Jackson's watercolors?

Oh and I have a question I wanted to comment seperately, if anyone has any insight I would appreciate it. So the white nights palette (the current plastic 36 full pan) is very specific as to which pans it will hold. Can anybody tell me which empty pans they have found to fit in there? Its looking like I'll just have to reuse the white nights when they are empty but I'm curious to see if anyone has tested this out and knows which ones definitely fit

Hi! Thanks for this review. Jackson's Art (in the UK) carries the whole range of White Nights paints in open stock -and because they don't charge VAT to customers outside Europe, it could be quite a bargain for those lucky watercolour fans outside of the EU. Jackson's is very reliable and they also offer all the pigment info on their website. I am not affiliated with them - but am a big fan of them as a supplier. And shipping from the UK might be easier than shipping from Russia :-)

My White Knights pallet were a gift and the first "Real watercolors" that I got. 😃 All my pans are so dry and have cracked terribly. I don't reach for them anymore as I've discovered DS and Schminke but I'm grateful to have had them. I thought about 4-6 of the colors were opaque and hard to work with. Just my experience. 🙂 Thanks for your review!

OMG they are in open stock here at my local art supply store for just under 2€ (2,4 US Dollar) per full pan, and i was reluctant, but picked up a couple of individual pans (turqouises, pinks, purples) I only tried to swatch them once, they are beautifully pigmented, but when dried they seemed to bleed a little strange into my paper? (at the edges it looks ragged, but i need to try different papers)

Perfect timing! I have birthday money and have been trying to decide what to get.. Was between these, Lukas 1862 and the mission gold pan set, but I think I'm leaning towards White Nights. I think the Lukas are going to be pretty similar to my Schmincke's... Do you have a vote?
@InLiquidColor
@InLiquidColor 6 жыл бұрын
Happy belated birthday! Hmm, that's a toughy. I've only ever used Lukas from tubes and I was not impressed, but I have heard the pans are better. I haven't used the Mission Gold pans either, just their tubes, and they're lovely. I'd say that Mission Gold would have my vote for the the really bright colors and many of their colors are transparent - but the con is that their earth tones are not strong. I only have this limited set of the White Nights but I really think for the value they're quite wonderful. I have heard that their warmer colors can be opaque, so that's a consideration as well. It really depends on what you enjoy working with!

Thank you! I unfortunately am a bit of an art supply junkie and just can't help myself to try more and collect different paints.. although I wouldn't say my aspirations are quite to your level! I have some Schmincke & Sennelier in pans thus far. I have some Daniel Smith and M Graham in tubes, but am struggling to use them at this juncture.. I have 2 young children who are quite a handful at the moment (the little one is turning 2 this spring). So until I can get them squeezed into pan and organized, it's really hard to grab them to paint quickly, so unfortunately they are just not being used.. pans are way easier for me at the moment.. The Schmincke and Sennelier pallettes I have are a bit more standard (although I do have both of the Schmincke limited edition sets as well). So I would say I am looking for more an expanded color selection with less standard colors. I think I like the White Nights sets for the pinks and warm colors and greens that seem to be nice for botanical paintings. But, the bright colors in the Mission Gold just seem so fun! It is though.. I just want it all! Haha Thanks!

I'm having a great time with your video's after having found ya! I'm interested in knowing about your style of switching and how you can tell what pigments are used. Is there an easy answer or is it pretty complicated? I'm really interested in starting my own switching now that I've seen yours. Previously I've had watercolors that I just hated, and thinking about swatching, it might make sense why I hate them if I can swatch and compare. Does it make a difference in your style of watercolor painting? You've opened my eyes to the deeper side of watercolors and pigments, so I have to go down this road to satisfy my curiosity, LOL! I do have a serious OCD streak in me, lol, but maybe the OCD'ness will help not hinder! Any tips you could give me (I know your probably super busy)? Are your swatch cards the same size as baseball cards or what sleeves do they fit into like yours shown? I've been trying to find my watercolor nitch and I think this'll get me closer! (You're probably thinking this gal is cra...zy...!) I'm also interested in starting an Etsy account but wondered if you've thought of doing a tutorial for it. Anywho, Thanks for all of the work you do to help the watercolor community!! You're fantastic at it and I see you're incredibly talented too!😉 Hugz, Tree

Hi Tree. I do my swatches on 2x3" paper to make the most of a 9x12" sheet of paper. The pockets are for baseball cards which are half an inch bigger in both dimensions. Sadie Saves the Day also has phenomenal swatch card templates if you really want to get into it:kzbin.info/www/bejne/gX3PfoKZec5rosU Your tubes should come with the pigment information, and I use handprint.com as my main reference when looking them up.
