Following LOADS of advice from you guys I decided to have ANOTHER go at measuring the valve clearances on 'Esther' my ST170 powered Mk1 Escort.
BUT first I had an engine problem to deal with that I caused myself last time I worked on her. 🙁

Put a list up of buckets you need Marcu and I bet some of your views may have the ones you need

One small problem I came across was when measuring the shim in bucket make sure your the lenght of metal that you put in bucket for measuring is same diameter as valve stem, the valve stem can wear a hollow in shim like a dish, so if the lenght of metal is wider it sits on edge of dish giving a smaller reading, it should sit in bottom of dish where valve stem sits and wears, maybe with lack of oil or hardness of shim breaking down made a couple of thou larger on mine. Hope that makes sense.

Thats a great point, thanks for the advice! 👍I think realistically Ill need to try to swap the buckets around and make sure the 3 I couldn't read are replaced with ones that I can read. Then I can re-measure the clearances with my feeler gauges and then see where Im at. 👍

Hi Marcus I do admire your patience and purseverance. I did message in the very start when you got the head back from AL and put it back on, what about the clearances. Any head work with solid lifters, clearances will change, Shame they are all excessive in which find unusual because Andrew would have reseated and lapped the seats, then they would have been tight not excessive unless you had all new valve seats fitted, hope you understand where I am coming from. New seats big clearances, old seats lapped in valves tight clearances(valve sits lower in seat)

Yes the valves were re-lapped in but I didnt send the cams to A L Developments. Also the cams were actually out of a completely different head. Andrew did tell me I should check the clearances. At the time it was a mad rush to get the engine back together in time for my pre-booked dyno session. 👍

Always undo cams from the middle outwards in a circular motion bit by bit. DONT gun them off or on. Otherwise you risk snapping the cams.

Would advise buying some metric feeler gauges for the future, as it is very easy to introduce error in the calculations with all the converting to and from metric and imperial.

You need some pinto feeler gauges that are angled to access the cam lobe

Use to do ford st and rs engines with same set up. Personally I use to use micrometers to measure the buckets - with that and feeler gage measurements. Only as they do wear down makes your measurements more accurate for clearance. I know it’s a little late to mention but for anyone reading or your next rebuild

That seems a hell of a lot of work for getting the lifter clearances right. I'll never moan about setting my pinto cam lifter clearances again! 😂

Keep bolts in the caps when you lift them (keeps them in same holes as removed also make sure you put them caps facing the same orientation as removed or you may bind up cams.

I was always taught to do valve clearance when cold, the idea being that gives you the clearance for when its hot 🔥🔥, Ald are suggesting you run slightly tighter valve clearance than ford recommend, will be interesting to see if theres any difference in how it runs after . Keep up the good work 💪

7:01 with the engine off, the VVT returns to fully retard position which means the intake valves stay open slightly later in the 4 stroke cycle. when you do compression test at starter motor rpm, some of the air gets pushed back out of the cylinder through the inlet valves.

@andrewgreen7778

For a couple of thousands over top tolerance on the clearance I wouldn't bother given that, generally, valve seat recession will mean that soon they will be in tolerance.
@andrewgreen7778
@andrewgreen7778 8 ай бұрын
Unless it's "tappety" you are better off leaving it. You will maybe lose a max of 2hp if they are loose. Too tight and burn a valve a lot more will escape.

The clearances are between 60% and 80% wider than my cylinder head builder has recommended tho. 👍

Novice here (I've only built one engine). Why do you need to measure the buckets on hydraulic lifters? Is it for when you have not got standard cams? I thought they fill up with oil and fill the gaps so no shims required
@marcushayesford
@marcushayesford 8 ай бұрын
You don’t need to measure the buckets on hydraulic lifters mate. ST170s don’t have hydraulic ones. 👍

Just bend the feeler gauges you have. You'll be fine to put a slight crease/angle in them. They're just thin steel Shout out rocker arms. So much easier than this shim/bucket malarkey 🤣🤣

There isnt much oil showing around the rockers or cover unless you have cleaned it off,be carefull you dont do the valve clearances to tight cause you could burn out a valve and be in a world of pain lol
