she really, truly is. She's absolutely fantastic, her performance was so good and believable here- I felt so bad for Stabler trying to have a real conversation with her and she's just completely not capable but Ellen is so fantastic that while I feel so bad for Stabler, I still have sympathy for her and don't hate her. Burstyn has such nuance, she doesn't make the character a caricature of bipolar disorder.

As an African American Woman who lives with bipolar disorder, I applaud this episode. There's a stigma in my community about it, but I'm not afraid to admit that I'm bipolar, and share with others how I deal with it. SVU has always been part of my BDToolkit, and I thank God for it.

I have a mother with bi polar disorder, and this episode always brings tears to my eyes, because of it's pinpoint accuracy as to the challenges encountered by the children and family of people who have been been struck with this disorder. Me nor my siblings have had this very genetic disorder passed on to us, but my niece and nephew have, so yes, as portrayed in this episode, it can skip a generation. I am just grateful for the medical research that has been done on mental illness and the treatments available. It also like this episode depicts, does come with shame and secrets.

Once again I've said it before and I'll say it again: No character is more deep and interesting than Elliot stabler. His family life episodes don't even feel like regular Cop shows. It takes an in depth look at an individuals psyche and what happened that formed that psyche. This episode was probabaly the best one for his character. A mother is someone that you can always go to for comfort and love no matter what age. To have a mother with a mental disorder is something I can't imagine. We take mental health and stability for granted. It truly is something to be thankful for

Another great episode that revealed details about Elliot’s upbringing was (Season 7 episode 4) the one where he visited the mental health professional/ former cop after beating up a cop who was in the midst of beating his son. Hearing Elliot talk about his relationship with his father was very informative about his upbringing & difficulties expressing his emotions.

I have a Bipolar Disorder, depression & I related to this episode with Ellen Burstyn. She's fabulous in the role with her son Elliot Christopher Meloni. I have a Mother that's Mentally ill as, her daughter it's very painful. Mine is treated my Mother's isn't. I told my Personal Story in 3 Masses to help educate & erase the stigma. I did suffer as, a child because, my Mother was sick. My focus on telling my Story was Music, my Spiritual Journey more my relationship with God. I write Spiritual Songs & use my gift of Music playing Violin Therapeutically. This episode of Law & Order SVU really got to me. My Mother overdosed on pills over & over. I had my stomach pumped too. Even, at two years old I couldn't save her. I'm grateful for his daughter a great performance of having a Bipolar Disorder. The ups & downs a Bipolar person goes through. Thankfully, my Bipolar Disorder isn't severe. Thank you SVU for airing such a difficult subject. Valerie😊🙏✝️💜🌸🌷

Like a lot of the folks in the comments my mom is also bipolar, this episode hit me like a freight truck and reminded me of the times when my mother was manic and she would take us to the zoo, the beach, and the mall all in one day and buy us a bunch of toys and my dad would come home fuming and the days she also spent just catatonic in bed leaving me to feed my siblings. I remember all the different medications she would be on, some that made her incoherent. Despite all of these things my mother is a wonderful person that continues to try her absolute hardest regardless of the circumstances. She raised 3 wonderful human beings and is the most loving woman I know. I love you mom.

I'm really looking forward to her coming back, Elliot the son isn't a side of him we get to see very often and there's definitely a lot to explore. I hope their not bringing her back to kill off the character, she could add even more dimensions to his character. Plus he's been through enough, but thats never stopped the writers before.

I remember episode where eliot is talking abaut his parents they both were cases his mother in one of her manic episodes almost cilled him.his father was verry violent after such childhood he joined army to escape then his girfriend got pregnant when they were young so he married her for duty becauce he didnt want his child too grow up in broken home i hope that he finally left his wife becauce it was clear that he loved olivia and olivia felt the same way they have verry strong bond .chemistry.understanding becauce they both came from broken homes .seen darkness in human natures.it was not only psyhical atraction it was much deeper they both didnt cross line becauce it was too deep they didnt want to loose eatch other

I wish my mom would take her medicine. got some kind of mental problem. she thinks she doesn't need it I've been trying to lovingly encourage her for 2 years by sharing the fact that I take medication for my PTSD and fibromyalgia and I'll probably have to take it for the rest of my life. I have another friend who's bipolar she's been taking medicine since she was 12 she's in her early thirties. illness whether mentally physically or spiritually affects everyone whether you're a Christian or not. of course there is the spiritual side where if you have a weakness it could be oppressed and worsened by a demonic being which I've experienced and had Deliverance I'm not Catholic. I'm born again believer but our weaknesses come from trauma and physical and it's just how it is the sinful world. If we choose not to use the resources we have that's really hard
