Stablers mom is a wonderful grandmother. She's there for her grandchildren and she corrects them when they are wrong she does what a real grandmother would do.

This one hits close to home. I've had depression since i was 16, but didn't know what was wrong with me and it got so bad that i nearly became suicidal. I couldn't explain what i was feeling because i felt no one would understand. I'll never forget how my grandmother came to me and was able to say exactly how I felt and what was going on with me. Turns out she, a couple of my uncles and some other family members have depression too. She helped me get through it, but most importantly, made me realize i wasn't alone in this and to never feel like its just me. That became everything and made me a better person.

I love the relationship Elliott's mom has with her grandchildren. Even though they live apart from each other, Mrs. Stabler is a loving grandmother. It kinda reminds me of my relationship with my grandmothers. We love each other fiercely and are always there for each other in good or bad times.

I really love how the actors dig deep to get the emotions that they pull out of their characters. This is one of my fave episodes. There's a good reason why this series has been on for 23 seasons. Even longer when you add Criminal intent to it... Looking forward to the new season as with Organized Crime too.

Hadn't thought of it before, but it might be character continuity for Elliot to be nervous when people he doesn't know well are driving. Childhood car wrecks definitely leave a permanent impression.

That comment that she made towards the end really stuck with me. It reminded me that; There's consequences to our actions but we can still be forgiven and forgive ourselves. "I did what I wanted, and I paid a heavy price".

I don't blame Stabler for running away from his mother, she is childish, immature, careless, self-absorbed, inconsiderate, and even inherently dangerous. She paid a terrible price to lead the life she wanted and she forced her unwilling young child to pay it too. When a parent puts their own stupid, irresponsible fun before the safety of their child, they have lost all right to be a parent. No wonder Stabler loses his cool whenever there are children in danger, he is trying to save them from the pain and fear he grew up with. That is his instinct to protect children.

This one scene was Emmy worthy. Casting Ellen Burstyn was perfection, IMO.

I know why Bernie talked to Kathleen. Elliott and his mom are estranged because she didn't get the help she needed. Granted it was selfish on her part. Bottom line, Bernie didn't want that to happen with Elliot and Kathleen.

Such a powerful scene. But it would have been nice if stabler eventually found out and through his daughter and not through Benson.

I guess she said it for the daughters sake so she could argue less with the dad but at least it would have possibly helped stabler get some therapy or something and not be so angry.

He died before we were introduced to Elliot. I don't think they explain it other than that the older kids were around long enough to remember him and knew that him and Elliot didn't get along. I think earlier in this episode Bernie says she moved out of the city after he died. I don't remember them ever mentioning a cause of his death, maybe its on Wikipedia or something.

And this is why kids who break the law end in jail or dead and the stupid parents suffer like they deserve. A kid does something criminal and you give them hugs and kisses and serve them hot chocolate. They associate affection with doing something bad. Then you try every crooked trick in the book to get her off with no consequence. Ever wonder why Freud blame parents for kids being screwed up? Then of course all the irrational and hysterical women turn against Elliott for doing the right thing finally. Brilliant!
