What I love most about this performance is the total lack of ego. It's just a bunch of guys on the stage, completely in the zone and having the time of their lives. They know they're killing it; that they're all performing absolutely at their peak; but instead of strutting, yelling, or barrelling around they just have these grins plastered across their faces and a vibe with the music. Mark pulls out an outrageous solo and then backs off to let the other players have their moment at the front. Terry has his dad watching, is utterly juiced and is playing like a man possessed and the others are right along with him despite it being and unsual tempo for the song. And all the time they are waxing and waning the tempo, teasing the audience with adrenaline highs and lows right up to the sublime finish. There have been bigger concerts, more charismatic performances, and more iconic songs; but when it comes to the pure joy of what music can bring to the world I don't think anything has ever come close to this set...

These guys came up playing in pubs and other small venues, until they started to catch on and play bigger spaces. This show is in a theater that holds 3,500 people. Two years later, they were playing the big stadium shows in front of 80,000. Working at that level kind of burned them out, though, which is why Dire Straits isn't still going. However, Mark Knopfler, the singer, lead guitarist, and songwriter, is still creating new music. He's 74, almost 75, and his latest album came out in April 2024. It made it to #3 on the British album charts, right behind Beyonce. He also owns a professional recording studio in London. If you like his work, there are 6 Dire Straits studio albums and a lot of live material. He's also done 10 solo albums, 9 film scores, and a ton of collaborations with other artists. So there's lots to explore.

The idea was to plays some ‘mood music’ that still rocked, but also I knew that if she asked me to change the music, we didn’t have an hope in hell.

He's also self taught, couldn't read music, and doesn't use a pick. He uses his thumb and first three fingers to pluck the strings with his finger tips, in what is known as the banjo roll. Mark is one of maybe 10 guitarists in the world that can run and maintain multiple 1/16th note riffs fingertip style. Classical and Spanish guitarists are amazed at and revere this man as a GOD. Yes, this band is great. And I heard them 1985 the first time, they helped me through my 'army' time!

Mark Knopfler is one of the few guitarists, who picks the guitar with his fingers instead of using a plectrum. By doing so he can play these signature fast arpeggios and runs in his solos. And the drummer Terry Williams is really the best part in this performance. Allegedly his dad was in the audience, so he ramped it up a little to impress him…!

This song was the number 1 most played song in our house parties in the 80s. There was no song like Sultans of Swing. ♥️🎼

Private Investigations, Telegraph Road, Romeo & Juliet from this Alchemy Live album, are stunning. Also, Your Latest Trick is one of my favourites that seldom gets a mention.

Yout could well argue band of the 1970's . What ever your favourite band of course ! A great band . But there were "others" = Joy Division, REM , Dead Can Dance and my own Number 1 = Wall of Voodoo.

Dire Straits, The Police and Queen saved rock music during the 80s. If you turned on the radio back then, as far as I remember, it was almost only Michael Jackson, Madonna and some, in my opinion, terrible electropop bands.

I love how the lead guitar parts compliment every sentence in the song. There's always a new guitar lick after every vocal line. It's so cool! It just keeps on living and evolving.

Mark's guitar style is very unique. He is a rare finger picking electric guitar player. I'm surprised other rock guitarist weren't inspired by him to get rid of the pick.

He's been playing that way since the sixties, but to answer to your question, probably finger picking against flat is the harder technique, plus the issue of volume. He once said the best amp you can have is a plectrum.

I saw them in concert in Kansas City, MO on their debut album tour shortly after turning the ripe age of 18. They opened with Sultans of Swing and it was all amazing from that point on. Very raw, no fancy lights as you mentioned, just unbridled talent playing hard and having fun doing it. Please do a reaction to "In the Gallery", which is also on their debut album. I love your reactions, definitely one of my favorite reaction channels.

That is the 80's music for you. Pure talent, no auto tune, and knowledge of music and the notes to pitch perfection. Mark always made sure in his rehearsals, that everyone was fine tuned.

Terry Williams on drums. Just employed with Dire Straits. Terry's dad was in the audience and Mark, after the soundcheck, told him to go All-In and make his dad proud.

He also is a finger picker. The drummers dad was in the audience that night so the told the drummer he pretty much had free reigns. That's why the guitarists were laughing at the beginning

"Telegraph Road" is a more folksy tale of how the countryside may sprout small towns that flourish and then fail with the rise and fall of industry -- it's an incredible composition and performace in the Alchemy Live set, and many fans consider it their best track. "Romeo and Juliet" is a flowing romantic ballad. "Money for Nothing" is an ironic pop-style take on being a rock'n'roller in the glam video era. "Brothers in Arms" is a heartfelt look at personal history and trauma.
