Hey Stacey, your reaction to "Man in the Box" was spot on! Layne Staley's voice is truly one-of-a-kind, and it's amazing to see you appreciate the depth he brought to Alice in Chains. Jerry Cantrell's harmonies and guitar work were equally crucial in creating their iconic sound. Thanks for waking me up with this video-there's nothing like starting the day with Layne's powerful vocals and Jerry's riffs! Now that you've opened Pandora's box to Alice in Chains, you should definitely check out the Holy Grail: "Mad Season," another amazing project of Layne's before he left us. I was 19 years old in 1990, when I first saw the music video for AiC's first single "We die young" from their debut album Face-lift. The sound and their image just blew me away. I've been a fan ever since. I saw them live in Vancouver back in '93 for their follow-up album Dirt (1992). They were AWESOME live! That period from 1992 -1995 was unbelievable as far as seeing legendary bands such as; Megadeth, Soundgarden, STP, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc. 😎🎸🤘🏼

I didn’t “discover” grunge until my 70’s, during the pandemic, when I took a deep dive into KZbin reaction channels. I loved it. One of the first things I noticed was that the vocalists of the top grunge bands were outstanding…. On a par with my favorite rock singers of the 60’s and 70’s. Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Eddie Vedder are my favorites. And AIC became my favorite band of that genre. I opened the doors to allot of music I’d never listened to before. There were worse ways to spend your time back then, I think!

Layne Staley is(was) a very gifted vocalist. Alice In Chains has a large following. Layne left us way too early in 2002 at the age of 34. I saw their current band which included original guitarist Jerry Cantrell here in Phoenix a year ago with Guns and Roses with my son and grandson(AIC is his favorite band). The MTV Unplugged set is a must listen from 1996. Dive in young lady. From a 62 year old man that loves AIC.

His voice was so powerful and had so much emotion and was almost haunting. Now that you’ve heard one of their more upbeat songs, I really think you should do one of their more emotional songs like Down in a Hole (live MTV Unplugged) or Love Hate Love Live at the Moore. Layne Staley (lead vocals) was the original singer of Alice in Chains. This was from their 1990 debut album 'Facelift'... The band's trademark was the vocal harmonies of Layne Staley's bluesy vocals and guitarist Jerry Cantrell's subtle vocals. Their sound was very unique for that time - a cross between early Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd w/ Beatles-style vocal harmonies. However, Layne Staley struggled w/ he+++n addiction and passed away in 2002 from an OD... Alice in Chains' biggest hits were w/ Layne on vocals... The band reunited w/ new vocalist William DuVall in 2006 and has released new albums since. The original Alice in Chains was formed in the 80's by Jerry Cantrell (guitar/ vocals), Layne Staley (lead vocals), Sean Kinney (drums) and Mike Starr (bass)... Signed in 1990, they released their debut album 'Facelift' and it sold gold by 1991 w/ the success of the single 'Man in the box'... Cantrell wrote the song about censorship by the music industry - how the record label kept trying to put the band 'in a box' in order to market and sell them as a commodity... AIC released an acoustic EP 'Sap' in 1991 showcasing the band's mellow side. 2nd full album 'Dirt' became a huge hit in 1992... the album came in w/ the Seattle grunge rock scene breaking big and it sold over 4x platinum... w/ the singles - 'Would?' ... 'Them bones' ... 'Rooster' ... 'Angry chair' ... 'Down in a hole'... The album had a lot of lyrics about the dark world of he+++n addiction, which Layne Staley and Mike Starr were struggling with. In 1993, AIC fired Mike Starr (Sadly, he passed away in 2011 from a prescription OD) ... Mike Inez (bass) replaced him and AIC released the semi-acoustic EP 'Jar of flies' in 1994, which charted at #1. Unfortunately, Layne Staley's struggles put Alice in Chains' touring on hold by '94... Layne recorded the album 'Above' under the band name Mad Season in 1995...That same year, Alice in Chains released their self-titled album which also charted at #1 but no tour was planned. Alice in Chains did a stellar MTV 'Unplugged' performance in '96 and played 4 shows that Summer opening for the band Kiss... Those were the last shows Layne Staley played... Layne survived an OD after the last show and Alice In Chains went on hiatus. That year, his longtime girlfriend Demri passed away and Layne lost all hope. In 1998, Layne agreed to record 2 new songs for an Alice in Chains boxed set ('Music Bank') - 2 truly dark songs were completed: 'Get born again' and 'Died'... released in 1999. Jerry Cantrell released solo records ('Boggy Depot' in 1998... 'Degradation trip' in 2002) After Layne Staley's death in 2002, Alice in Chains (Cantrell/ Kinney and Mike Inez) reunited to tour in 2006 w/ William DuVall on vocals... They have released 3 albums since - 'Black gives way to blue' (2009)... 'The devil put dinosaurs here' (2013) and 'Rainier Fog' (2018) Some of the newer AIC songs - "Check my brain" ... 'A looking in view' ... 'Hollow'... 'Your decision' Jerry Cantrell released another solo album 'Brighten' in 2021.

Layne Staley live could still deliver the intensity. First saw them in 1992, again 1993 (twice), 1994, with my last show I saw was 1996. He was the voice I wished for to bring people together. But you could hear the sadness and downfall back in ‘93. In 1994, I feared the worst. Then Cobain dies. Layne disappeared. Jerry still carries the weight of the magnificence of Alice In Chains. Music affects me more than any event in history. R.I.P. Layne.

Layne's voice n lyrics are what grunge was all about. He is missed by millions but his legacy is forever, thru his music. Check out other songs by AiC, preferably the MTV Unplugged version, you'll def love them. You can't dive into grunge without listening/watching another amazing voice like Chris Cornell's. Became famous while on Soundgarden but his career started earlier on. Bands that had the privilege of having him were Temple of the Dog (check out Hunger Strike where he also sings with Eddie Vedder, from Pearl Jam), Audioslave (lots of hits but check out Like a Stone, Show me How to Live, Cochise, I am the Highway, Shadow on the Sun) lots of other great songs but I love those ones. Also he had a lot of covers, which he actually made them his own, like covers of Patience, Nothing compares 2 U and others.

Alice in Chains & Pink Floyd 2 bands with the greatest guitar artists and vocals from David and his crew to Layne and Jerry harmonizing together. Im 50 years old now and these 2 bands have gotten me through some tuff times. Lost my father at 13 years old. A younger brother in 1999 and an older brother in 2006. Floyd and Chains kept my alive period!

'Love, Hate, Love' (Live at the Moore 1991), and the studio cuts of 'Rooster' and 'Am I Inside' are essential.

Stacey!!! Stop what you are doing right now and react to Alice in Chains "LOVE HATE LOVE - LIVE AT THE MOORE" and watch the true power of this man's voice. Most epic live singing performance I have ever seen. Seriously.

All of AIC songs, live at the Moore, and the MTV unplugged shows are must watches. Though you need to watch the official video of Rooster for the story. Another must watch is Layne's side project Mad Season, live at the Moore.

That particular song is only a taste of what Layne Staley was capable of as to his voice capabilities. There are songs that will absolutely blow your mind. What are the greatest voices that will never hear again. Greatly missed. Plus his songs they never get old. Every time I hear a song from with him being the lead singer it's like a refreshing Goosebumps feeling. He is a one of a kind. Most of his songs as I have researched are based off his life triumphs and tribulations. What are the best there is and what are the best ever will be.

This song along with "would?" and "down in a hole" are probably their 3 biggest hits and they're all different types of masterpieces.. "Love, hate, love" live at the Moore is a must see/hear to truly experience the power of Layne's voice and the bands skills.. Love your reaction.. great choice to break the AIC ice..

Layne Staley (RIP) was a once in a lifetime talent and Jerry Cantrell is a once in a lifetime musical genius. Inez, Starr, and Kinney are (were RIP Mike Starr) the best of the best, too. Ann Wilson from Heart said you could feel the stage vibrate from the power of Layne's voice. Man in the Box is the song that ushered us from the age of glam rock/hair metal into the age of grunge/alternative rock.

Layne has the most powerful, well controlled and unique voice ever heard. You don't listen to Layne, you feel him. Love Hate Love from Live At The Moore is must. MTV Unplugged - Down In A Hole.

The song man in the box came out nearly 35 years ago and got it hook in me out of the gate. I haven’t tired of it yet. it’s been a while since I’ve heard this and it took me back. It seemed like something was happening in music and it was just awesome between Alice In Chains Soundgarden Pearl Jam. ,and Nirvana all these artist kind of knew each other and collaborated on different projects together. I was 21 at the time now I’m 55 and it doesn’t seem that long ago. I believe time really is an illusion thank you Alan Watts.

Buckle up this is a DEEP rabbit hole and one of the most all around talented bands of all time. Vocals, riffs, solos, harmonies, lyrics… there is so much diversity and depth in AIC and their work, one of my all time favorites and Layne and Jerry’s intertwining musical creativity is beautiful sad angry sorrowful and everything it could be. Love the reaction!!! 💯🔥
