Layne Staley (lead vocals) was the original singer of Alice in Chains. This was from their 1990 debut album 'Facelift'... The band's trademark was the vocal harmonies of Layne Staley's bluesy vocals and guitarist Jerry Cantrell's subtle vocals. Their sound was very unique for that time - a cross between early Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd w/ Beatles-style vocal harmonies. However, Layne Staley struggled w/ he+++n addiction and passed away in 2002 from an OD... Alice in Chains' biggest hits were w/ Layne on vocals... The band reunited w/ new vocalist William DuVall in 2006 and has released new albums since. The original Alice in Chains was formed in the 80's by Jerry Cantrell (guitar/ vocals), Layne Staley (lead vocals), Sean Kinney (drums) and Mike Starr (bass)... Signed in 1990, they released their debut album 'Facelift' and it sold gold by 1991 w/ the success of the single 'Man in the box'... Cantrell wrote the song about censorship by the music industry - how the record label kept trying to put the band 'in a box' in order to market and sell them as a commodity... AIC released an acoustic EP 'Sap' in 1991 showcasing the band's mellow side. 2nd full album 'Dirt' became a huge hit in 1992... the album came in w/ the Seattle grunge rock scene breaking big and it sold over 4x platinum... w/ the singles - 'Would?' ... 'Them bones' ... 'Rooster' ... 'Angry chair' ... 'Down in a hole'... The album had a lot of lyrics about the dark world of he+++n addiction, which Layne Staley and Mike Starr were struggling with. In 1993, AIC fired Mike Starr (Sadly, he passed away in 2011 from a prescription OD) ... Mike Inez (bass) replaced him and AIC released the semi-acoustic EP 'Jar of flies' in 1994, which charted at #1. Unfortunately, Layne Staley's struggles put Alice in Chains' touring on hold by '94... Layne recorded the album 'Above' under the band name Mad Season in 1995...That same year, Alice in Chains released their self-titled album which also charted at #1 but no tour was planned. Alice in Chains did a stellar MTV 'Unplugged' performance in '96 and played 4 shows that Summer opening for the band Kiss... Those were the last shows Layne Staley played... Layne survived an OD after the last show and Alice In Chains went on hiatus. That year, his longtime girlfriend Demri passed away and Layne lost all hope. In 1998, Layne agreed to record 2 new songs for an Alice in Chains boxed set ('Music Bank') - 2 truly dark songs were completed: 'Get born again' and 'Died'... released in 1999. Jerry Cantrell released solo records ('Boggy Depot' in 1998... 'Degradation trip' in 2002) After Layne Staley's death in 2002, Alice in Chains (Cantrell/ Kinney and Mike Inez) reunited to tour in 2006 w/ William DuVall on vocals... They have released 3 albums since - 'Black gives way to blue' (2009)... 'The devil put dinosaurs here' (2013) and 'Rainier Fog' (2018) Some of the newer AIC songs - "Check my brain" ... 'A looking in view' ... 'Hollow'... 'Your decision' Jerry Cantrell released another solo album 'Brighten' in 2021.

Layne Staley live could still deliver the intensity. First saw them in 1992, again 1993 (twice), 1994, with my last show I saw was 1996. He was the voice I wished for to bring people together. But you could hear the sadness and downfall back in ‘93. In 1994, I feared the worst. Then Cobain dies. Layne disappeared. Jerry still carries the weight of the magnificence of Alice In Chains. Music affects me more than any event in history. R.I.P. Layne.
