HI! I liked your video. Here is my proposed definition. - Information is the variously organized data, that is the operand, of a decision making process, which has consequence in a larger context.

Information is when I hear something and say "Wow, I didn't know that. That was interesting." Something isn't information when you tell me something you thought was interesting and my first reaction is "I really didn't need to know that."

Innnnteresting! It fits the "news about something" bit, but has an added layer of "that I care about" which I think is probably how most people approach whether or not to make that jump from "info" to "knowledge." I can dig it!

As a scientist, I get a kind of vertigo-like feeling when peering at over the edge of a baseless foundation when contemplating the question, "What possible, irrefutable means can there be to distinguish information from misinformation?" The whole process of science is just a guess to an answer to that question. I'm clearly biased in favor of the quality of this guess, but it is a guess. At the end of the day, and all of science is just an experiment to see if this guess answers that question. And that's the spiral of thinking I peer off into.

Information is the structure of the universe. When you communicate, you are moving bits of structure between memory systems. Our minds are actually made of software (information stored in a memory system, like the cortex). So our minds are really made of pure structure (which is separate from the hardware structure, like atoms and brains). Using software you can build entire alternate universes (like game-worlds, or the matrix movie). bye ;)
@JohnStephenWeck6 жыл бұрын
No, true and false don't matter. Your mind, and communications in general, don't care about the truth. They still have structure (information) no matter what the truth status is.
@ziopino10185 жыл бұрын
"Our minds are actually made of software" is a highly debated metaphysical statement. On scientific ground, it is just one of the possible interpretations of data gathered by neuroscientists.

I know this video and your comment are old, But this topic recently got the residency in my head 😅 I absolutely agree with you. And that’s why one(or 10) question is bothering me so much right now. Where and how this information come and go? How can it disappear when we die, or if our hard disk was damaged and destroyed ? Nothing disappears in this world - only changing the form. And the other one - our brains are computers, but how did we get the OS? Who wrote it? So information is like a… I don’t know the “devil”? Like the cursed apple from the Bible? And Love is “God”? Balance ruined - we start wars and develop technologies. That’s not about religions, it’s something I want to know - what exactly IS Information, why we can’t see it, where it comes from? Where does it go if it can’t disappear? Can matter transform into info (what if black holes are exactly the processes of that transformation?) ? Why so many philosophers and religions from different ages get the same ideas but interpret them so differently? I just think if nothing can disappear in this world physically, then nothing can be created. Information is here and there - we only got a little access to it. We don’t create ideas - computers can’t create - we receive, we interpret, and we communicate/pass/spread..

My undergrad is in Educational Studies. I also studied some developmental psychology. I'm looking at information with linguistics and logic as a foundation, I believe that information is communicated through semantics. People are responsible for conveying information. Computers and machines also do that job too. Without people, computers and machines wouldn't be able to convey information.

But let's be clear on something...see the problem is rather subjective than objective...every thing we find hard to explicitly explain I beleive is probabaly in the higher dimensions...it's like an onion,..there is more to life than the observers, . The information that makes us identify the information of what we observe...we are part of the information too..it's likes ventriloquist who feels he doesn't have another ventriloquist's hands shoved under his but, but he has his own hands shoved up the puppet's.. Maybe this is where the concept " God" and everything metaphysical came to being, to help man make sense of this, that we know is there, but can't seem to phantom.. Information is contextual.. However , I feel we can all see and use it the way we seem fit, within the confines of the context

I am a neuroinformatician however on a personal basis I subscribe to the definition physicist who are proponents of "digital physics" which thinks of the universe in terms of a natural or artificial computer process and define all distinction between things whether noise, misinformation, or something correct, they believe information can't be destroyed which lead to stuff like the holographic principal to deal with the information paradox with prevous models of blackholes and that information is elementary even more so than energy and particles which are just manifestation of distinction. I view this definition of information as the root definition and all definitions are steming from this root and are defined within the lens of context.

Excellent presentation. As that quote goes "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" then one could say "A book about Tree types with no one around to read it, is not information or is it?". Information is only information if someone needs or wants to understand when, where, who, and how!
@tekeek5 жыл бұрын
Is data information or does data make up information! If data makes up information does that make data bits/pieces of information! If data is bits/pieces does that make it metadata! If we hear, see, smell, taste, or touch does that translate into data/information! Feel free to delete or let me know...I am just throwing out random thoughts on this topic as I process all of the responses here in the comments, video and from www.quora.com/What-is-information
@tekeek5 жыл бұрын
note: more random thinking. feel free to comment. Is the cookie actually a cookie? Is the cookie delicious factual? Stacks & Facts: First, there is the idea of truthfulness: information is factual. If I tell you that this is a cookie [while holding a cookie], that is information. If I tell you it is a cake, that is misinformation… Or at least, about this cookie... Cookie Monster: [eating an object] OMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOM [smacking of lips]. And now me give you information about cookie. And the information is cookie was delicious. So if "information is factual" one could say that the "information is cookie was delicious" is not factual therefore this is misinformation; I might think it tastes bad. Additionally, how do we know that object Peter is holding is a cookie? In some cultures, it is referred to as a biscuit. So could information just be aboutness and thingness or does it have to be truthfulness, aboutness, and thingness to be information!

I went to a murder party in a library. I always felt I could find the information I was searching for during my studies (except periodics), here I was with my symptoms, surrounded by first years finding every codes and cyphers for the murder party. Meanwhile, I was searching the trashcans (I actually found the plans the organisators had thrown away). It made me feel inadequate and I have almost not gone in a library in 8 years. Murder indeed.

Suppose you collected data for years or decades on rainfall, and catalogued it based on day of the week. Then you could analyze that data and find out what the rainiest day of the week is. You could make a little graph, and it would be backed up by carefully researched statistical data. The weatherman could use the graph to tell everybody when to bring an umbrella with them. I guess there's many ways to consider what is information and what is not... this is just my favorite angle. Don't get too caught up in the weather, folks.

people from different backgrounds (scientist, merchants, artists etc.) process data according to their potential and knowledge where the information derived from the data varies from each other depending upon where it comes from respectively and that info is circulated around the world. so can that be the reason of how misinformation , difference in opinions are created ?

Great video! I have been trying to understand many things in life. Information seems to be the key. Information is the agreed upon translation of data decoded. .. at least in my perspective. Information is a language and languages are how we interpret life as i understand it. There are lots of was to understand what i percieve as reality. I think reality is the most important thing i/we want to achieve threw living. We do that threw understanding . Threw our understanding of mathamatics whiich is the language of classical science is one way. So im thinking that all the ways we have developed to understand reality are all variations of reality explained. Or at least our attempts understand what life is. I know i jumped back and forth between i and we and our but i did so because i wanted to convey that knowledge or language or reality holds no reason to exist unless shared. It is what makes us human and not a rock. Although a rock hold information that makes it a rock it is not human. Let me know what you think about my comments please....if you would.,could or can. I have to go stare off into space now my brain just melted.

Talented presentation-great vid. “Find meaning according to context” sounds like phenomenology. But does information exist beyond its medium? Surely it does, as information has causal impact in the material world. But where does information exist? Only in our consciousness? But if so, how is it causally impactful in the material world?

"Context".. I don't have a nobel prize , but personally, I feel information is intrinsic.. What we unanimously make out of something reflects our commoness has human beings.... There is a threshold somewhere beyond us out of which humans and our environment emanates from such that when we interact with it, it forms a "whole", which might not be or might be spontaneous... I thought about this off the bat...

I like to think information is a property of matter and energy that describe the basic structure, qualities and quantities of an object Consciousness replicates information, the consciousness I believe is organized form of biological energy, Whether the psyche dies after the body dies or a part of reality peserves or records consciousness After death is a mystery
@MetaphysicalAxiom5 жыл бұрын
Information = structure.. be it temporary or in constant flux. If there is no structure; then there are merely the building blocks of information.. the bits. Bits are also information but with no context. The bits make up a Higgs field of which becomes the pressure factor of other more complex structures/information emerge... I am in the process of forming some of this into wisdom.
