The first video of my journey by bicycle to South America. Mostly an aesthetic thank you, and reflection on how I ended up here. I really hope to make a series of thoughtful videos, to inspire, motivate and show how to explore the world by whatever means you have available to you.

What a perfect KZbin channel to find! As it turns out I will be bikepacking with a dog and a trailer --- a Burley flatbed cargo --- from Oklahoma City to South America, leaving September 1st. First I will cross Texas, then two months in Mexico, then four months in Central America, then on to Colombia and parts yonder. My dog is a one-year-old ten pound Chiweenie named Marvel. She rides in a basket that rests on the front rack of my much-modified Surly Pugsley. I am 70-years old, and spent fifteen years living and working in Latin America. I solo backpacked in almost every country there, but now I have switched to bikepacking. As I am retired Marvel and I can ride anywhere we want to. I hope to see you on the road somewhere south of the Rio Grande!

I’m elderly, and yes, I would roll my eyes somewhat as a parent, but would smile and be proud of you at the same time.

Thank you so much for this! So well said. I agree with you. I wanted to be a scientist and instead became the "traveling man" of the family. Leaving on my first ever cycle tour soon (IL to MN and then dream of making it to Argentina as well lol) and my adventure bones are rusty. Thank you. This video is exactly what I needed as the pre-trip nerves build.

@@thelonelyroad You went through my small town a few days ago. My niece actually talked with you and she was telling me about your journey. I hope you realize that when you go through different towns and take the time to speak to people that you leave behind hope and inspiration!

That's so cool. Honestly part of the reason I do this is the small interactions I have with people. Usually filled with kindness and hospitality. What town?

@@thelonelyroad Since I have a public KZbin channel I never say what town I live in. She talked with you outside a gas station/store. You definitely left a lasting impression on her and gave her a renewed sense of hope. You just never know what a minute of your time and a few kind words can do for someone. I can't think of a better, more meaningful way for you to live your life!

Question... How do you finance this long tour. What about your finances back home, i.e., bills, mail, belongings, etc.??? I'm interested in the practicality and how to's in order to do something like this. The things that are rarely if ever talked about during long-term touring. It is very intriguing 😊

Well I saved up for 3 years. The money I saved I invested in stocks and crypto currency to try and make more money. So far it worked out quite wonderfully. After my first tour of India. I knew I wanted to do this long term..I sold everything I owned. All I own is what's in my bike. For work, I'm a Canadian tree planter. So I live in the bush for about 4-5 months out of the year in a tent. Then when I'm not touring or travelling I stay at my dad's house. I pretty much changed my life so I could do this full-time. Because travelling became what's important to me. Ya keep asking questions it gives me ideas. For videos. I'll try nd make one about it.
