When you bring a paper close to a fire, it burns. Quite easy to get, right? But, if you observe keenly, we can notice that the burning occurs in stages. It takes some time for the paper to catch fire and the flame spreads across the paper.
Similarly, the burning of fuel in an engine can also be categorized into different stages.
In this video, we have explained the stages of combustion in an SI engine categorized into 3 stages by Sir Richardo, the Father of Engine,
Ignition Lag stage
Flame Propagation stage
After Burning stage
Ignition lag is the time instance between when the spark is produced and when the fuel starts to burn. In this stage, the fuel gets heated up and an initial flame is produced.
Flame propagation is the stage in which the flame produced spreads all over the fuel across the combustion chamber. This is the most important stage in combustion.
All fuel in the engine cylinder is not burnt in the propagation stage. The leftover fuel gets burnt during the expansion stroke. This stage is known as the after-burning stage where this is the final of combustion.
That is all about the stages of combustion in SI engines.
