Losing a loved one to a sudden death makes the grief process more complicated than just going through the stages of grief. So let's talk about the things that no one tells you.

This grief counseling video covers the following topics:
00:00 - Introduction to the video
00:34 - Stages of grief
There are 5 stages of grief that most people are familiar with, but in the case of sudden death, there is often an additional sixth stage of grief - Shock.
The shock stage is where it is hard for you to even wrap your head around the death of your loved one. But with time, the reality starts to sink in, and the stage of denial sets in. The denial stages are often followed by the anger and bargaining stages. You get stuck with all the negative emotions associated with the grief process. As other stages fail to bring relief to a grieving heart, you are eventually forced to face the reality that you will have to deal with the grief and loss. But this realization that you have to cope with grief often first brings sadness and depression. But with grief help and support from your friends and family, you will settle into the acceptance stage, where you are no longer lost in loss, but you learn to live while missing the person who is no longer in your life. There is no real "moving on," but there is "moving forward" with your life.
A lesser-known grieving fact is that we do not go through these stages of grief in any set order. People often go back and forth through these stages of grief because everyone experiences these stages in different ways. This makes the grief process unique and personal, even if two people are grieving the same loss.
05:14 - 3 Things no one tells you about grief
Now the truth is that there is more to grieving than most people realize. Dr. Suri talks about three things about the wisdom of life and death, which will help you cope with grief and overcome the pain associated with losing a loved one.
The first thing that helps you in dealing with grief and loss is the realization that you not only miss the person who is gone, but you also grieve the impact of them leaving on your life.
The second grief wisdom is that time helps, but time alone will not be sufficient to overcome loss and grief. You will have to make conscious efforts to redirect your thoughts and emotions to not get stuck with grief anger, or grief depression.
The third grief advice is to continue reaching out to your friends and family for emotional support. Your loved ones won't be able to make your pain go away, but they will give you strength and support to deal with the grief process.

I've experienced it 5 times, mom died in a car wreck, sister died from a blood clot, two lifelong friends committing suicide, my brother died in a motorcycle wreck. I've been in and out of psychiatric hospitals, and struggle everyday with it.

Thank you for this video. I lost my dad suddenly 7 months ago. He went to bed one night & just didn't wake up. I've found myself really angry with everyone around me & things they've said to me since he died. I've just learnt through your video, I'm not angry because of what they've said. I'm angry because they can't soothe my pain. I'm angry because nothing soothes my pain.

I am so sorry to hear about your dad. I'm glad that you found the video helpful, and that you're leaning-in on your loved ones, even if they can't fully understand what you are going through, and can't soothe your pain. Even though they care about you, no words or person can fill the void left behind by your dad's passing. Sending you positive vibes in your grief and healing journey. Please be extra kind to yourself - there's no timeline for the grief process, but with time, it gets easier to accept this turn of life.

What I have learned acceptance is a very loose term. I believe there are certain degrees of acceptance. Some folks never fully come to full acceptance and they live with the complete loss the rest of their lives. Sure they accept that "said person is now finally gone". But they don't come to acceptance as in terms of acceptance being some kind of overall complete peace with it, if that makes sense.

Thank you for this video. My fiancé died suddenly last month at the age of 39, and I’m still in a fog. I avoid thinking about him, because it’s just too hard to accept that he’s gone. But your video gives me courage to face my feelings and the reality of his death and the death of our future together. I’ve also just started going to grief counseling.

Sir I lost my father, an excellent doctor to covid in the second wave... despite myself n my mother being doctors , we could not save him... we all got infected at the same time n could not take care of him properly... we didn't even start steroids on time... we were all in extreme panic n not able to take any rational decision... Please help me to come out of this extreme sadness n guilt as I'm not able to forgive myself for not taking the right steps n acting fast... Also suggest some good books on grief if possible

Sripriya, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I can certainly relate to the pain and the guilt. I know me saying this would prob not be of much help, but you can't look back at criticize what any of you did and didn't at that point in hindsight. Within the context of everything going on, I'm sure you did the best you were capable of thinking and doing at the moment. That being said, the grief process always gets complicated when guilt is involved. My best advice would be to work with a counselor (individual or family) to just process your experience and loss, and all the associated thoughts and emotions. It's important to grieve properly. In terms of recommending books, I would recommend A Resilient Grieving (by Lucy Hone) and A Grief Observed (by C.S. Lewis). Also, a lot of times, when working through the stages of grief, our own existential vulnerability becomes obvious and can be difficult to deal with as well. For that reason, I would also recommend When Breath Becomes Air (one of my all time fav books - You can see it in the background of this video as well). If those seem too dense for you and your family at this time, then check out the Traveling Cat Chronicles book (also a movie based on the book, but I recommend reading the book). It's a fictional book but speaks to death, love, and the meaning of life.
