Thank you for posting this. I'm not a painter but am a huge fan of Frankenthaler's work, and it's great to watch someone explain the staining technique.

We are using Liquitex Acrylic Inks in this workshop. I like them because they are very thin but the color is super saturated. If you want to use a fluid or soft body acrylic you will thin it out with water or flow-aid water, but you will lose some of the intensity of the color when you do that.

SO HAPPY to have found this video. What kind of canvas are you using here? Unprimed? Is it like a textile? Would love to know what to ask for in my local shop.

@deeeecraig Oil paints have acids in them that will eventually rot canvas, which is why using oil paints directly on untreated canvas is not recommended. Acrylic paints have a base of acrylic polymer emulsion which has no detrimental effect on canvas. You are safe applying acrylic paints directly to paper, canvas, wood that has not been treated or primed. Acrylic gesso is used to prime most artists canvases so it is widely understood that acrylic directly on canvas poses no problem.

@devotedViolet The stuff I use to create that color bleeding effect is called Flow Aid by Liquitex. It is highly concentrated - you just need 1 part Flow Aid to 20 parts water but it really creates some vivid effects allowing the color to spread and feather out to a soft edge and really penetrate the canvas. I think you'd have fun trying it out at least. Let me know how it goes!

Hey, thank you for the video, one question if I'm painting on unprimed canvas , is it normal if the paint get through the canvas and when is already dry i can see the paint on another side?
@MicheleTheberge Жыл бұрын
Yes, that’s exactly what happens and why the technique was given the name “stain” painting. Enjoy!

what books are you referencing? thanks :)
@MicheleTheberge Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Great question! The book I'm referring to is "The Impact of Modern Paints" by Jo Crook and Tom Learner. This is one of my favorite books. I love how it shows an artist perspective of modern materials. It discusses how many influential artists make their art and the impact modern day paints have has on said artwork. The book is currently out of print but you can find copies for sale here: amzn.to/3WMAW1x

Is there any alternative to the flow release medium as I don’t have them available in my country.. can i use only water and acrylic paints or ink ? Thank you
@MicheleTheberge3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the active ingredient in flow release is glycol, Khaled. My understanding is that it is the same thing as used in the spot free rinse agents for dishwashers. You could test that out, but do it on something you are not attached to first. And please let me know how it goes. Also, just water and acrylic paints work excellently! Enjoy your painting time!

Thanks Michele Theberge! Not sure if you will get this after so many years - I notice that in the workshop your canvas is not stretched. Given that the paint is staining/dying the canvas would you say it is ok to stretch the canvas after painting?
@MicheleTheberge4 жыл бұрын
Amy Gray yes, definitely. That’s how Frankenthaler did her compositions.

Flow Aid -- 1 part Flow Aid to 20 parts water

Sarah Mitchell you can pretty much make Flow Aid by adding a drop ir two of dish soap into water, use that as a medium.

Does acrylic paint or medium cause any sort of erosion in the canvas support during and after stain painting? I've wanted to stain, but others have advised that acrylic "hurts" the canvas just as does oil paint, and that the only archival safe method of stain painting is by using molding paste or acrylic porous ground on the surface of a board. I've tried it-it doesn't look the same as the 2nd generation New York School's work. Can I stain paint a canvas that is archival safe? How?

I hated having to take a practical art class in college. Everyone stood around looking so pretentious and bored. I had no idea what I was doing, except filling up my liberal art credits; and the things we did - like this activity seemed so silly. I'm sure if one is an artist, interested in textiles the whole event was fascinating. Unfortunately, I have no talent and only passed these classes if there was an assigned essay. Bless those who have the vision to create!

Hey - sorry about that but you're in luck! bit.ly/3apwbSB I have a full class on Bluprint on this technique bit.ly/3apwbSB that is normally about $20 or $30 but right now it's either free until April 16 or half price if you want to buy and download it to keep. Not surprising about the quality - this was casually recorded on an iPhone by the professor where i was guest lecturing in 2009!
